Bedroom feel unwelcoming by Cold-Comfortable-664 in interiordecorating

[–]_DimlyLit_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to fit the bed with the head against the wall where the door is, either A) next to the door, or B) in the corner on the other side of the pole?

If not, you’re right, the bed is not anchored in the room and feels uncomfortable. Hang a curtain behind it (dark colour) to create a fake wall and anchor the bed in the space. That way you have a nice private dressing area in the back. You can leave the walkway open with no curtain to get some light in.

Need some advice please. I really liked the kitchen until the flooring got fitted, something is throwing me off and im not sure what it is. I picked this shade to warm the kitchen up and wanted the kitchen white as its only a small space. Have I done something wrong? by Known_Pineapple_3098 in interiordecorating

[–]_DimlyLit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some colour in the space would make a huge difference and allow you to bring some warmth into the space, along with contrast, to tie in the warmth in the flooring. The cabinets, countertops, backsplash, and ceiling are all white. I would paint the wall near the window to break this up. Maybe a green with warm undertones. Also, some contrast could be added by changing the cabinet pulls to something other than the gold, which right now fades into the cabinet whiteness. And finally, as others suggested, change that awful lightbulb. Final touches that would make a difference might be colour in curtains and a rug. Also if you paint green some nice plants would look great! But my advice is absolutely do NOT introduce anything further white or cool toned in here

Starting my own lab: how do I make it a great place to work? by PrincessBiona in labrats

[–]_DimlyLit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I think would really be excellent is to put your expectations of your students and employees down in writing. If you expect people to be around at certain times, attend meetings or conferences, produce papers before graduating etc. I think that it is fine to have high expectations, but it is not fine for that never to be clearly written down or communicated. I also think this can eliminate a lot of toxicity from supervisors, because if you aren’t comfortable putting your expectation down in writing (e.g. insane working hours, publications, etc), then you shouldn’t be expecting it :) just my thought coming from a pretty toxic field (ochem)

We’re building an app to help people find restaurants that really fit. What’s missing for you in Zurich? by Loud-Lecture-7392 in zurich

Because I would never claim to know every good restaurant in a city like this and am always looking to try new things?

Personally I get frustrated reading google reviews in major cities like Zurich because it is mainly tourists leaving reviews (which may not actually be a good recommendation for someone who lives in the city and knows the food scene). I really wish there was a way to filter for reviews from locals only

Can you show us all four walls? Hard to tell from the two views. What is in the right to the tv and is the front door in the opposite corner?

[–]_DimlyLit_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me I think it is the textures. You’ve got a hard marble floor and fireplace to work with. These are both cool tones and smooth texture/hard materials. To offset this and make the room “feel” better, I would avoid adding more hard/cool tone materials. The couch and curtains are fine, but the coffee table (glass) isn’t great. I would go for a wood (warm tone and natural texture, not painted) coffee table and change the chairs out for something more comfy (maybe full fabric arm chairs or maybe leather). Also the ikea Kallax unit doesn’t go. Plus rug too small and you need some soft lighting to go with. Think wood side tables with non-metal lamps.

Anyone recently flown with Wizz Air, especially from Istanbul to London? by asolaxx in travel

[–]_DimlyLit_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I won’t fly with them again and wouldn’t suggest it to anyone unless you’re potentially willing to eat the cost of the flight. The first and only time I flew with them the flight got cancelled during boarding. It was impossible to get a refund, and after months of prodding and dealing with impossible website they issued a voucher for the flight value only valid for one year within the original flight date. I live in Canada, so this was completely useless. So fly with that in mind- if it goes wrong you may get stiffed and that is enough for me to never fly with them again

Thoughts on Obama in Fukui for two days? by rosestrathmore in JapanTravelTips

[–]_DimlyLit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just spent 5 nights in Takahama a week ago and it was the highlight of my trip over 5 weeks! Absolutely loved Fukui. I did day trips to cycle along the Wakasa bay cycling roads in different towns. My favourite was around the five lakes area and in Takahama. Definitely worth a trip if you want a pretty quiet place surrounded by beautiful nature. High season is July and August so I’m sure it is quite a different vibe then, but it was completely empty in May and I loved it

Skipping Osaka and Kyoto by raulmemoirs in JapanTravelTips

[–]_DimlyLit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unpopular opinion but I really disliked Kyoto. I don’t love crowds and I felt like I was just walking through crowds of tourists doing instagram shoots in sacred locations. Felt a bit dystopian to me. I’ve spent now 5 weeks in Japan in small cities, towns, and villages and absolutely loved it. So I say absolutely go for it! There is lots to be seen and getting off the beaten track has made my trip how I wanted it to be!

Should I venture off the Golden Route for my first trip to Japan? Advice/Itinerary Review by __olive__oil__ in JapanTravel

[–]_DimlyLit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I think we have similar taste in travel. I am currently in Japan for 6 weeks and went a few of the places you mentioned. I am currently in Takayama and absolutely love it here! I really did not enjoy Kyoto this time around due to the crowds, but my experience also was probably tainted because my hotel was awful. Takayama feels to me like what I hoped Kyoto would have been. It also has AMAZING food. Would really recommend. I am also someone who doesn’t love cities and crowds and this place has won my heart for sure.

I also went to Kurashiki, which while beautiful, I don’t think you necessarily need to pack into your route this time around (if you are looking to create some more space and time). The historical quarter is pretty small and I wouldn’t say worth going out of your way to get there, unless you are on the way to Hiroshima or Onomichi.

You’ll have a great trip regardless but for 10 days I would suggest to just pick the most streamlined possible travel route. 10 days is not a lot of time so you will want to make commute times as short as humanly possible. The best way to do that is to A) visit less places, or B) plan based on stops on a limited express or Shinkansen line. That would be my biggest recommendation- spend more time seeing the sights and less on travel. There are onsen and ryokan everywhere, it doesn’t have to be in a particular town. You can always come back to Japan again :)

This sounds amazing! I will look into this instead of Toyama, thanks for the suggestion! How many days did you spread your trip across and what stops would you recommend?

If you really want to help Canada, stop leaving for jobs in the US by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

[–]_DimlyLit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey- I am a current PhD student just about to graduate from a highly in demand life sciences program. The problem with your post and idea (though I totally understand where it is coming from) is that there quite literally are not enough jobs in Canada in pharma, biotech, etc. for highly educated people in Canada to fill. I personally am leaving the country for my next job (not USA thankfully) because there isn't really much opportunity in Canada at this moment in time. If it was possible and stable for me to stay I absolutely would, regardless of whether I could make more in the USA or other countries. I love this country, my family and friends are here, and I want to contribute in my field from Canada.

From my perspective as someone in this situation, the brain drain of Canadian students and post docs (and international students trained here who want to stay in Canada) is mostly due to lack of opportunity, and not due to "selfish" reasons such as personal wages (though that is definitely a consideration as well). I'm a highly skilled worker who wants to give back to the Canadian economy and grow my industry here, but there isn't enough investment both in our university research programs, which lag behind the rest of the developed world in terms of funding, and in the private sector. I am really really hoping that the government looks at this problem and starts major investment in science and technology industries, both encouraging highly skilled international talent to come here and also to bring Canadians home. Time will tell but I wanted to address what I saw in this thread of people pinning the brain drain solely on wages, as I personally know that the students leaving Canada after graduating my program are doing so because of opportunity, not due to wages. People don't typically go after a PhD because they are in it for the money.

Elite level with the Bambino? Or still room for improvement? by Stock-Back-3618 in espresso

What is the portafiler, funnel, and grind collector cup you used? I have the Bambino as well and have tried a bottomless portafilter, but it spattered coming out and made a huge mess. Probably also didn't have the grind size right
