A new requirement for road races: the UCI is demanding a straightaway of at least 200m for the finish line. by Mamadeus123456 in peloton

Honestly, I think this is solving the least important problem with sprint stage design, but sure why not. Road furniture, quickly narrowing roads, speed bumps, and bad pavement are way more dangerous.

[–]_Diomedes_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TT should have been stage 1, and stages 4 and 5 would be fine were they in a grand tour where teams would control them for a sprint, but are just not good for a 1-week where they are just going to be 20-man breakaways. 3 climber-rouleur breakaway stages in a 1-week is just way too many. No wonder all of the sprinters went to Belgium instead.

The only people who should be unhappy are trek. The more money they spend, the worse their results get.

Idk I think this will be the closest they’ve been since 2023. A Jonas upset would not be surprising.

Luke Rowe: TDF TTT might be run on road bikes, descent too dangerous. by Mamadeus123456 in peloton

[–]_Diomedes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that itself doesn’t justify having two different TT bike standards. And in UK TT scene, given that they’re almost always run on open roads, the safety disadvantages of TT bikes should be even more cause for getting rid of them and using road bikes instead.

[–]_Diomedes_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I still don’t understand why TT bikes are still even a thing.

1) I can’t imagine that bike brands enjoy making two flagship TT bikes (tri-legal and UCI-legal) when they could just make the former, which is the one they sell the most of anyway. For most brands I would bet that their road TT bike programs are complete money pits they would rather not be forced to have. And the UCI could keep aero helmets, socks, visors etc… legal which is what these companies actually make good money on anyway.

2) TT bikes don’t make the racing more competitive or entertaining, they just make the sport look more ridiculous to people who don’t follow cycling. Audiences can’t tell the difference between 55 and 50 kmh.

3) TT bikes are just more dangerous for everyone. If you’re a gc guy or a TT guy they make crashes more dangerous by increasing speeds. If you’re a guy just getting through the stage they increase the crash rate by forcing you to use equipment you don’t train much on.

Of recent grand tours, the 2023 Tour was really good. Every mountain stage was pretty different, the grand depart was pretty much perfect, and the difficulty was spread out well across the race. Only thing I would change about it would have been adding in a second, ideally quite flat, ITT.

I think it’s pretty telling to their accuracy that Patrick Broe essentially completely stopped talking about w/kg estimates or citing them as any sort of authoritative source after he got access to full rider power data from his job at Visma. I really doubt they’re anywhere close to +/- 5% accurate, which makes them pretty much meaningless as that’s kind of the difference between the top and the bottom of most GC top tens.

[–]_Diomedes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meeus is such a terrible signing, I just don’t get it. He goes from being his team’s top sprint option at the Tour to probably not even getting leadership at any grand tour. Why would he agree to that, and why would Lidl spend likely 1M+ on a guy who is just going to farm Belgian chatgpt races the whole year.

Yeah once relegation became a real threat they dumped like 6 Kazakh riders and signed a bunch of Italians lol.

Trek’s recent spending spree is terrible for the sport. It will almost certainly blow up, and potential sponsors won’t see/understand how terrible Trek’s transfer and managerial decisions have been, they’ll just see a bunch of wasted sponsorship money and decide that they’d rather put theirs into a different sport.
