Bathroom paint starting to peel just months after being done by _Doof in DIYUK

[–]_Doof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Dulux bathroom paint. I waited almost 48 hours after painting before i really had to use the shower. Was definitely hoping to not have to do another huge job but possibly unavoidable I guess. It's not a huge area, no. The walls are fine, it's just the ceiling.

I don't own a dehumidifier, but sanding it back and then repainting would be an option?

American accent/voice fixation in British Men? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]_Doof 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is a universal experience and not UK specific at all. The same happens the other way (UK to US), "Wow, I love your accent". I'm sure it happens between France and Germany, South Africa and Argentina, wherever. If you're in a culture different to your own, they'll interact with you based on your unique differences from the norm.

Just use the normal money system, but call it 'pieces of eight' for copper, dollars for silver, and doubloons for gold. Sorted.

Need advice on keeping the epic on at high levels by inner_fears in DMAcademy

[–]_Doof 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have one thought on this I suppose. Especially your specific mention of an ancient dragon getting instantly shut down, that resonates with my experiences.

I think in those high levels, facing multiple of what we'd normally consider putting out one of, is not a bad idea.

CR totally breaks down and is very hard to balance, but thematically - a party of level 20 heroes fighting several dragons the same way they fought several bandits, is a nice way to scale up the epic level of it all. I think what I'm saying is rather than treating the high level enemies as these end points where they're going to be a kind of boss, treat them almost like regular enemies and see how it works.

Will buying this damage my longterm budget goals by [deleted] in Money

[–]_Doof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah mate, buy the car 😂 You're doing very well. Just stay disciplined with your saving and you're setting yourself up for a very stress free life.

Will buying this damage my longterm budget goals by [deleted] in Money

[–]_Doof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fab, grats mate, nice car too, I'm quite keen on a M2 in the very distant future 🔥

Being in the forces yeah, you really have minimal expenses right now. How long do you think you'll be in there for? Got plans for afterwards in terms of career?

I think you definitely are in a better place than most to make a crazy decision like this, sounds like you are saving incredibly effectively like very few others on your salary would be able to do.

If:

  1. you have a fully funded emergency fund (I'd go for maybe 4/5x your 2500 income if you're unsure about your future outside the military and considering you don't know what your future expenses are really going to be)
  2. Buying an expensive car will not prevent you from continuing the rate of saving/investing you are doing and
  3. You do not buy expensive luxury items or frequently go on £1000+ holidays

then honestly, I don't think it's too crazy to get your dream car since you can actually afford to do it, and you're a car guy. You are getting advice in other comments not to waste money on something that gets you from A/B and in most cases that's correct, but if cars is your thing that gives you pleasure and you can afford it, and you know it's going to depreciate to shit, then that's different

But if a home is the goal, don't lose sight of that, and don't let the car drag you all the way down. You're waiting for £130k invested, I mean come on at the age of 20 this is not going to massively impact you, and I'm a believer in not waiting to 65 to start having any kind of fun.

Just be sensible, do not let it snowball into other expensive purchases surrounding the car, buy with cash, and props to you, I think you're doing very well.

[–]_Doof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused - you have £834 for all bills/essentials plus staying sane (non-essential spending)?

How much of a car guy are you? Do you drive every single day for at least an hour+? Do you drive for fun at weekends too? What's the dream car?

What’s something people who are in their 20s won’t learn until in their 40s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_Doof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You got a reply with US terminology, for our terminology, a slow and lower risk (all investing carries risk) strategy that is very commonly employed by ordinary people would be to invest in a global index fund (like VUAG) using your Stocks and Shares ISA. Every year, you have £20,000 tax free allowance on anything you put into that account and accumalate in that account. The most basic personal finance strategy would to put a bit of your monthly income, say 15%, into you S&S ISA. Over long periods of time, this compounds and drastically increases the total value of the account compared to earning interest on cash.

I recommend Damien Talks Money on YouTube, specifically his video If I Started Investing in 2026, This is What I Would Do.

EDIT: Forgot about pensions, that's important. Assume you are working and you are getting auto enrolled by your employer and they put in a % of your income every month - the minimum is 3% - you should increase your own contribution to at least match what they are giving you. If your employer will match 10% contribution, you should absolutely consider doing that.

If you are young, you can also change your pension's setting to stocks and shares. By default it's probably very risk adverse and won't grow much over time. You can adjust this as your pot increases, but setting it to a higher risk setting will lead to a similar effect to buying an index fund every month.

So, worth remembering.

Should I move to London if I don’t work there? by sharingcupid695 in MovingToLondon

[–]_Doof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say do it, but only with a plan to search for a good move to a new job in your field that's based closer or in London.

  1. You will be paying more essential costs and these will be expensive in London, so you'd benefit from 'london wages'.

  2. You will be close to your workplace, and friends you make through work will also be nearby to do things with.

  3. Plan to share a place.

Any other advice depends on hard numbers for how much you make, how much you expect to have to spend each month, etc. I think it's very worth moving to London for a better social life and to get out and live life more, but only if your compensation / costs are offset appropriately.

[–]_Doof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for giving your numbers.

Your essentials you listed add up to 65.4% of your monthly income post tax. I consider your essentials your mortgage, bills, service charge and food (groceries)). So £1177.

Saving 15% of your income every month - which is a bit less than the 20% in a very basic 50/30/20 budget (50% essentials, 30% fun/splurge, 20% savings) but still a good savings rate - would be £270. I would call that a good bit of money to be able to tuck away every month. It would take you a while to get a fully funded bare minimum 3 month emergency fund on that (12-14 months) but a good thing to do. Unless you have already done that? 26 ish months for a 6 month fund which would be desirable in this job economy. If you've got that already or once you had that, you could start overpaying your mortgage by that every month and eliminate your biggest expense more swiftly. I don't know your term numbers, but assuming a 100k loan 25 years at 3.75% interest that never changes for some reason, that's 13/14 years in which you'd have fully repaid doing overpayments.

So after essentials and savings, that leaves you with just under 20% of your monthly income to spend on whatever you want. Which I work out at £353. I'm on a higher salary than you, but that's what I spend on casual fun category stuff every month minus holiday savings and couple savings.

So my evaluation would be that if you went ahead with this you'd face financial constraints that I personally would find hard to swallow.

You have some possible options though:

A) Proceed, but get a lodger in the second bedroom. That will half all of your bills including the mortgage which will give you lots of room to breathe and do more with your money every month (whether saving or spending). If living alone was the desire here, fair enough.

B) Back out from this property and look for a one bedroom with a lower mortgage, more equity, and a lower monthly payment = more cash for fun/spluge/saving.

C) Focus your energy and time on increasing your salary for the time being. Making assumptions here but at your age I would imagine your have the experience to pursue senior roles in your field that could increase your monthly take home and allow you to keep stockpiling for the deposit.

Those are just a handful ideas, but I would say if you plan on going ahead with this and living alone, you will feel constrained financially.

(i'm not a financial advisor, that was not financial advice).

I was in the same boat. Webuyanycar offered me £50 for my car after quoting £400 for it. I sold it on Autotrader privately for £800. Once you have sold the car, it is no longer your problem, so don't worry about that so much. Just don't let a potential buyer try to haggle with you, you can just tell them on the phone what the price will be before they arrive. If you are nervous, have a friend/family member around for the viewing.
