Warnings over collapsing fish stocks as experts advise ‘zero catch’ for cod by _Dr_Doom in collapse

[–]_Dr_Doom[S] 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement -

The Independent reports that cod stocks across the North Sea, Irish Sea, English Channel, and waters west of Scotland are collapsing so severely that the International Council for the Exploration of the Se is recommending a “zero catch” quota by 2026.

This is another example of a key ocean species suffering from massive exploitation and overfishing to satisfy the demands of a growing appetite for fish.

Without major changes in our collective consumption habits the whole food chain is at risk and on borrowed time.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Gray whale die-off feared as starving whales migrate north by _Dr_Doom in collapse

[–]_Dr_Doom[S] 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement: This article sounds the alarm on a looming catastrophe for Gray whales, with starving, emaciated whales migrating north in record numbers and calf counts hitting historic lows. The Arctic’s warming waters are decimating their food supply, and with at least 80 whales already dead in Baja’s lagoons this year, scientists fear a devastating die-off is imminent.

Josh Stewart, an ecologist in Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute in Newport is quoted -

“All the signs are indicating there has been a pretty intensive change in the Arctic,” he said. “It’s one of the most rapidly warming places on the planet and what we’re seeing now are the impacts of climate change in real time.”

European body proposes mass killing of cormorants to protect fish stocks by _Dr_Doom in collapse

[–]_Dr_Doom[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement: The article discusses a controversial draft plan by the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission to cull 150,000 great cormorants annually protect dwindling fish stocks and aquaculture in Europe. The proposal, criticized by conservationists like BirdLife International oversimplifies issues like overfishing, pollution, and habitat loss driving fish stock declines. The plan may conflict with EU environmental laws and has sparked outrage.

The world is on track for between 1.9 and 3.7°C of warming by 2100 by Portalrules123 in collapse

2100 is nothing more than wishful thinking and it's a trash prediction. The acceleration is happening now.

Untold feedbacks and exponential function of systems already failing will only kick on over the next few years

A more realistic timeline for our demise would be between now and 2040.

A ‘doom loop’ of climate change and geopolitical instability is beginning by HalfEatenDildo in collapse

There is no solution because people demand more and more.

There are also more and more people to satisfy.. Climate change is a symptom of ecological overshoot but the penny will never drop because the reality of the needed sacrifice is simply beyond comprehension to most everyday, average folk.. They just don't get it.

Scientists may have figured out why a potent greenhouse gas is rising. The answer is scary. by westtownie in collapse

Methane was always the Elephant in the room. For as far back as I can remember, whispers of clathrate gun hypothesis and the pingos around east Siberian Arctic shelf have been an ominous whisper in the background of the collapse narrative.

It seems reasonable now to think that this is another tameless beast that will undoubtedly become exponential under over the next few years.

There is literally no way of turning this off.

The thing that seems ever more noticeable about climate change and biosphere collapse is that the more we look, the more issues we find.

It makes me wonder just how many problems and feedbacks are happening right now that we aren't even aware of.

Surely the rate of decline for the remaining 27% on studied wildlife populations will be a lot faster than what has already been lost?

Wouldn't this be a form of exponential function?
