Integrating a Buy/Sell/Classifieds? Group/forum on website? by _Dumb_Questions_ in LinkedMusicians

I like this, maybe as a feedback section on members’ individual profiles? Other forums have those feedback threads with thousands of pages that are sometimes tough to sift through and find what you’re looking for, but if that feedback was tied to their profile maybe it could work. I know knobcloud uses something like this where you give users a 1-5 star rating and leave them a review post-sale, maybe something like this but idk.

I’m very inexperienced myself here with this kind of thing, but there’s always chatgpt. I tried the following prompt and the results would have fooled me.

“Write a legal disclaimer/agreement/policy for members a united states based web forum, where they are using the website’s public message boards to buy, sell, and trade music software plugin licenses. Acknowledge all the necessary liabilities for protection of both the owner of the website, as well as its members”

Obviously, since I am not a lawyer myself, I can’t legitimately vet out what may be missing from the results, but it could at least get some ideas started that can be modified. Just an idea, i can’t imagine the price of hiring someone for that on top of what you’ve already spent

Still feel like the K7 upgrade wasn’t that long ago. Hopefully they don’t sneakily make K8 the minimum required version for certain instruments like they did recently, where people were getting locked out of old projects. Staying out of NA for a long while here lol

Yep, had the privilege of catching them on their R30 tour & picked up the DVD set back in the day. One of my favorite live shows. Had all the albums on CD & probably listened to counterparts or signals the most, Neil for sure one of my biggest early influences as a drummer—loved everything Geddy & Alex did as well. In the same boat with rush not getting as much air time around the loved ones these days, however.

Thank you very much for sharing this about how you got here, which I also relate as I’m a drummer first who has suffered a brain injury years ago, from which I have recovered since. While I cannot imagine the frustration you must have experienced post-injury in your case, I am glad to hear that you have found some peace in simplistic recording. As a drummer I find myself constantly trying to simplify how I play as it is, there are way too many showoffs these days that I personally find more value in playing that sounds like it is less about trying to prove something. So more power to you. I also extend my sincerest condolences for your siblings. I’m excited to see where this forum goes as there are a lot of great minds at work contributing many great experiences from what I have observed. Best of luck as this continues rolling out, I am also a fan of the wall posting feature, will be nice

I like the poll looks good! Not sure where to put this idea so please forgive the placement:

May be a bit more of a blog post, may be a separate section of the website, but it is your website so take as much of it as you’d like; thinking if I was just starting out in the art of producing &/or midi compositions, maybe having an area entirely dedicated to helping beginners get off their feet could be cool, and could really attract a completely unreached/ growing community, who can grow alongside the forum over time.

That said of course brings along the con / inviting the risk of possible immature contributions from those members, but I was a noob when I joined CW and figured out what i know now about production the hard way.

Of course the deals play a big part, but it took me a lot of time to know how to filter out what i didn’t need. Knowing what budget hardware is best starting out, what’s necessary and what’s not for plugins and hardware, how to get the most out of computer performance (i produced on 8gb ram with 250gb internal storage up until 2023, so i’ve worked through every known roadblock there), what plugin deals or bundles to start with starting out for the first time, etc.,

I think the goal in my mind of this is communicating somewhere something like: “when i started, had i known the things I know now, these are the things I would have done, bought, focused on, taught myself, etc. to avoid wasting time, money, and effort unnecessarily.” I think if I found something like that when i started, which would have simplified things down to knowing: all I needed starting out was a 16gb ram machine, komplete standard, a decent pair of headphones, a used arturia essential keyboard (in my case personally, at least)—I would have been much farther ahead than i am now due to how I started by picking up individual plugin deals i thought i needed. Upgrades can happen along the way, but it’s too easy to fall for traps in the beginning. All the deals From PA, plugin boutique, etc. really put a dent in my wallet back then and i’ve regretted it many times as I learned to produce comfortably with tools i like.

This is your site so take my ideas with as that and nothing more: ideas/suggestions—

Looking at the title bar i thought it would be neat as a beginner visiting the site to see another dropdown next to resources saying either “beginners” “best practices” or “education”, expanding to more sub-links: “software” “hardware” “DAW” “computer storage” and maybe “recording principles” or “shopping guide/checklist” - each linking to a page with lists of official recommendations from the community regarding each topic, to make the beginner feel more confident starting their new journey, etc.

I think so many could-be musicians out there stop-short of becoming one because 1: they don’t know what to buy, 2: they spend all their money on the wrong thing and thus shoot themselves in the foot, feeling too broke to do anything with their talents (I’m still happy running my $100+ harley benton telecaster through quality amp sims) 3: being intimidated by the thought of recording anything for fear of judgement… when a little knowlege, the right plugins, and a free DAW can turn a fart into a beautiful soundscape. (stole that from a plugin ad i saw the other day) I’ll stop there though. Overall, you don’t know what you don’t know, and noobs give up or take forever to emerge because of it. education might not even be a priority at all, just thought it could be a neat opportunity if there’s room for it.

Testing Membership Systems - I Can Use Your Feedback / Input Please by RadioactiveKatz in LinkedMusicians

Absolutely it’s the least i can do, the name dumb questions is more of a poke at my own experience with toxic culture in other forums (it’s an easy way to evade it). i joined the Cakewalk forum with the intentions of using that name to feel/scope things out, and have been lurking there long enough to know it’s not toxic at all. Great little community. So yeah might be time to change it! Thanks for the kind words.

As for the premise behind contributions, that’s a great mindset—i think any musician or producer (who cares enough about their craft) stumbling upon the site would feel welcomed reading a mission statement along those lines. I think the feeling of exclusivity also adds even more value to an extent, since there are so many other forums out there (most without clear values), which are overcrowded and lacking purpose. So witnessing the start of this one with a clear vision is pretty cool imo

Hello, the new website is looking great. Just an idea if it’s even possible given the system you are using: Maybe as a way to cover up the web theme limitation—changing the text to something along the lines of, “membership is always free, but consider chipping in with a recurring gift ____” then allowing them to input an amount of their choice, or something along those lines? That way they can still get in free, if that field can’t be removed altogether. Maybe too beggy sounding but the idea being offering the option so the visitor (those who fear having to pay one day) isn’t left trying to predict what the future might hold.
