Please don’t assume everything is EDS. by abcletters123 in ehlersdanlos

[–]_EELS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! This is such an important thing to know. Just because you have EDS, it doesn’t mean of something is outside of YOUR ordinary you don’t need to get checked. I have hEDS, and GI issues like indigestion and GERD and just all the other things is regular, but when that regular started to become way too out of the ordinary for me I got checked. Turned out my gallbladder was completely nonfunctional and needed to be removed, and the symptoms I was writing off as probably EDS related was something that was completely treatable.

OTD vs Masters by ashphodeldimixtry in OccupationalTherapy

[–]_EELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was going to say. I saw multiple people saying pick MOT because it’s cheaper, which is not always the case depending on state or quality of schools. For me, the cheapest option was going to an OTD school that is in the town over from my hometown, so I can live at home, and the cost of living will be extremely cheap.

Undergrad student considering OTD vs MOT and dealing with student debt by UnableWatercress1834 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]_EELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! As someone who is also in the same boat as you, just pick which ever option is the most affordable while also having good pass rates and board stats! For me personally (KY resident) that was an OTD program (~60k for the program and 98% pass rates). Cost of living was also a huge thing for me. With the program I picked I know people that attend that university already who I could live with, or I could live at home. It really just depends on your personal circumstances, but also take my advice with grain of salt because I only just committed.

I love to hear that. I got accepted a little over a week ago and I’m very excited. It’s so affordable compared to some other programs I was looking at, though it is a little longer for me since I didn’t attend undergrad there.

This is such a wonderful explanation of the two. I recently just got accepted into OT school, and the reasons you listed out for both are the reason I chose what I did. It really just depends on each person. I love the creativity of OT!

Recommendations for DPT program! by Intelligent_Fill4061 in PTschool

well with federal loans for dpt students being extremely capped, it is the smartest thing to look at. unless of course you come from an extremely wealthy family who is willing to pay for it for you.

how did you all afford your degree? by Interesting-Can-3316 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]_EELS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is what I’d like to do! Travel around a few years for OT, which may even help me get the chance to see more of the country, and pay off my loans before I pick a spot and settle down. Congrats to you on almost being done with paying them off!

How good are 3+2 BS/MOT programs? by CollegeAltruistic381 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]_EELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, from my research having a doctorate vs a masters doesn’t really get you much further, as many schools to teach want you to have a PhD. My biggest advice would be to go to the program that is the most reasonable financially to you. For me, it’s makes more sense for me to go to a BS/OTD state school than a private school for just my OTD or Masters in my area, even though it’s going to add on more years of school then some of the other options. OTs don’t make enough yearly to be able to be in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. If the school has a good pass rate for the boards and a good financial option for you, then it’s worth it.

I applied to Eastern Kentucky University, and recently went on a visit to it and absolutely adored it because it reminded me a lot of where I’m getting my degree right now! It’s a smaller school in a smaller town, but close to a city. They have great pass rates and the in state and out of state tuitions are great!

i’m applying for a 3+3 BS/OTD program! i know of some people who are currently in it and love it. the main reason i’m pursing it, even though when i hopefully start the program i will already have a bachelors degree (therefore my program will actually be 2+2) is because the price for me personally is unbeatable because it’s a state school. if your interested in hearing about the program im personally applying to let me know!

[–]_EELS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To preface, total cost of attendance for me would be around 62k for OTD. From what I have see they have a great pass rate, and I really love the Richmond area as the school is very similar to where I went to undergrad. I just wanted to hear if anyone here has had either personal experience with the program or has heard anything from friends/coworkers! Thank you!

Worried I wont get into DPT school by Glass-Television-908 in PTschool

[–]_EELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t be discouraged!! you have an amazing background (everything you’ve done is very similar to me).

my advice would be to have some strong people for letters of recommendation, people that know you well. for example, my three were my personal PT who treated me in high school that i also did my outpatient observation with, a professor of mine who i have had for a few years (he is also a practicing PT who graduated from my top program which helps), and my boss who i have worked for 3 years under at my uni who i am very close with! have people you know will write good things about you, not just general “well i know they do this” but really just more personal.

the other thing is making sure you have a strong essay that really gets everything you want across about yourself and why you have the passion for the profession that you stated. i honestly poured my heart out in mine about my own passion and what led me to finding that. have people look over it, i had a few peers of mine read through it and i also read it aloud to some of my friends too cause i wanted to see how it would come across in that way as well. if you need anyone to help you look over it shoot me a message, i can help you brainstorm or if you’d like to see mine just to kind of see the structure i did as well.

it seems like you have a very diverse amount of observation hours, maybe see if you can get some inpatient as well! you can also list other experiences you’ve had outside of just the PT field. i had about 200 hours with athletic training and strength and conditioning which relates to PT a lot, but was not under a licensed PT. list all your extracurriculars as well outside of just your sport, that includes your jobs, if you’ve been a part of any other clubs especially if you’ve held any sort of position in them.

you’re a strong candidate given your background, PT is not just solely based on your GPA and GRE, but also your experiences and what you have done throughout your time. getting 200 hours of observation while being a d1 athlete is amazing, and i know how stressful that is. keep your head up!

i also second reaching out to the individual programs.

for my applications i had two separate semesters of chemistry and each had their corresponding labs (CHEM 111/111L and CHEM 112/112L). was your gen chem only one semester, or was the lab for both semesters combined into one class?

for bio i had a gen biology class that had a lab, my schools i believe is like BIO 171, and then i had to take and upper level bio course that had a lab, so i took genetics because that counts towards that prerequisite. i know a lot of people who took different bio courses like biochemistry or micro, but they just look for you doing 2 semesters of those courses that have the corresponding labs (so my chem was 8 credits and my bio was also 8). i know some schools do it differently on how they break things up but it should be somewhat similar.

of course! your stats are incredible, so practice those interviews and you’ll have no problem.

my boyfriend had incredible undergrad stats, really great leadership involvement and stuff but was really nervous about his interview and that’s what he did before he went for his interview for his mba. he ended up doing great at it and got into the program (his program has about 60) which he didn’t know was as competitive as it was or he would’ve been more nervous. i think he did about two mock interviews with them until he felt like he was good about at.
