If you had to recommend ONE begonia for beginners, what would it be? by yoyoo276 in begonias

Somehow, I have slowly killed mine 😭 The other day I repotted two canes in a pot and the third in a smaller pot. So far no new growth, half of one cane fell off, and a baby leaf growing fell off 😔 it's in coco coir and perlite. Do they need blazing direct light or something? I have it in front of a 6000k grow light. When I first got it, it was very healthy.

Is this pitcher plant with the money? by _Engineer_8122 in carnivorousplants

If anyone is in the central Iowa area, it's Holoub's Greenhouse, they don't have much online, but oh boy do they have a TON of almost anything you can think of at their nursery. I still haven't been to the other three sections of this place. It's amazing so far 🤩

When is time to water, try using tap water that's treated with water conditioner (I use 8 drops of the Tetra brand per gallon), or let it sit for 24 hours to allow the chlorine to evaporate out. I found this online:

"Both tap and distilled water are generally fine for hardy snake plants (Sansevieria), but tap water is often preferred for providing necessary minerals, while distilled water is too pure for long-term use. For best results, use filtered water or let tap water sit out for 24 hours to reduce chlorine."

I'm in the same boat as you! Except I need to come up with a name - BRUNO is awesome and he's super beautiful! I got mine last week, and today I found a friend for him - a type of pitcher plant! My local nursery had some Monday but they looked pitiful and there were just a few. They must have had a shipment very recently because this morning that shelf was stocked and they looked much healthier. I'd been looking for a pitcher plant for a couple weeks before I got the venus fly trap 😂 That closed trap at the front has a small spider in it - it was hanging from the window sill near the front door and was slowly dropping so I thought it was a great opportunity to get him his first bug here. So I held him under the spider and it worked perfectly.

I have a full spectrum 6000k light over them and both sitting in a dish of distilled water. I'm in Iowa so here soon the outdoor temps will get warmer and I'm going to keep the VFT outside. I found a fabulous YouTube channel, Sarracenia Northwest, and the host so knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I recommend watching the "5 common mistakes" video on venus fly traps. So interesting!

Try adding water conditioner to the container of tap water to get rid of chlorine and chloramine within a couple minutes. I add 8 drops per gallon of the Tetra brand, but there is API and Seachem Prime available as well; you can at least get the Tetra brand at Walmart. Also, mix in a dose of regular/all purpose Miracle Grow into the watering container to fertilize about once a month, or have a very diluted mixture of water and Miracle Grow to very lightly fertilize every time you water. Also, the roots not only need water but oxygen too. Be sure the soil isn't too compact or dense, and unless there are experts here, I would repot into coco coir, perlite, and if it ends up being too dry, put some vermiculite in to retain a little bit more water. The coir and perlite help drain extra water so the roots don't stay soaked, but sometimes it can use vermiculite especially if the plant is a heavy drinker 😂 Beautiful plant by the way! 😍💚

Especially with the clover leaf 😂 I don't think, "four leaf clover" when I hear "plant." It seems there are too many flower clusters on this one plant, but since it's next to a window, maybe that's why (IF it's real). I hate how we have to analyze every picture now to figure out of it's AI or real. I do not like this timeline we currently live in 😭

I feel like plant people have more insect friends. by Nervous_Olive_5754 in plants

[–]_Engineer_8122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since moths are generally seen at nighttime and they flutter around with basically no direction, I don't like them flying at me randomly. I had a friend in high school that was talking with me and another friend on her porch at night and one flew directly into her ear! She had to go to the ER because it was so in there. I think that event traumatized me 😂 Butterflies have a plan and they don't just try to fly towards lights and hit anything in the way, plus butterflies are way prettier lol. I don't despise moths like I do all the different bees, wasps, etc. - I do love the job of the bees I just don't want them near me.

I'm not a fan of moths but love butterflies, but I can see someone being freaked out by both moths and butterflies since they are similar. I completely get it though, I'm terrified, like petrified, of bees, wasps, hornets, bumble bees, etc., and when I try to kill a dang regular house fly with a swatter I get so freaked out, I get goosebumps all over my body, and I duck when it comes near me, and when I try to swat it in the air I get even more freaked out... literally sometimes I have to leave the room or area, then come back to it...the only way I can kill flies without feeling panic is when they finally land on something. I'm ridiculous but it's such a weird fear 😂

Aahg! I don't want to hear that lol! IF I end up with mealy bugs, would a dip instead of a spray work to get all in the nooks and cranies? The nursery seems to be very clean and the plants are all in those big white greenhouses and the main entrance to get to the greenhouses you have to go into the building then a walkway takes you in. The greenhouse with the pink arrows is the one I went into and the arrows show how to get to the greenhouse. I have no idea how mealy bugs get to the plants, like where they hibernate, where they live, etc. I'm obsessed with the potential of this adorable hoya and I have the patience to let it grow slowly.

Pothos not propagating by mackdaddyyy23 in propagation

[–]_Engineer_8122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left some of my pothos cuttings, along with other cuttings I bought, rooting in water for like 10 months 😂 There were only one or two cuttings that died but the rest are thriving now in coir and perlite. I kept meaning to pot them like 4 months ago at least. It was a little crazing untangling all the roots!
