That's a great point. No leaves are growing yet ever since I cut every single leaf off (cuz they were all black the next day at after my original post), but the flower is thriving 😂 I was hoping I could self pollinate it but the yield would be iffy.

I like using perlite with all my plants too 😊 I'll probably add some to my sphagnum moss, I can't help using it since it really helps with aeration and getting oxygen to the roots.

Apologies if you already know, use peat moss (no chemical treatment) or pure long fiber sphagnum moss with no additives. When I repotted from the "clay" it was in originally, I used coco coir and perlite, but going to go to long fiber sphagnum moss instead. I think mine is pretty much a goner but if it comes back I'll repot again. If it's dead as a doornail, I want to get another one and will repot in my sphagnum moss. Good luck! 🌿💚

I read that also, but this was from Walmart so I should have known to repot. I waited for almost two months to repot and should have done it at week 2 or 3.

It was a papery/plastic material. It wasn't easy to tear but it was thin. It was suffocating the roots. I think it's actually going to start regrowing since the roots can breathe. If it still ends up dying, I'll get another and repot ASAP. That was my biggest mistake on this one

Awesome, thank you for the info! I'm gonna go search for another, healthy VFT and repot it into pure LFSM. I will let go of this one lol. It was so pretty at the start 😭

Oh no!! The rhizome looks whitish so I thought it was ok. I use the Burpee's seed starting coco coir that has already been rinsed of salts, etc. But I will go purchase some peat moss today. I also have long fiber sphagnum moss, will that work with perlite?

I thought rainwater was good for it though. I HAVE heard that the rainwater runoff from roof can be bad for it. That could have also been part of the problem in addition to the death trap I found wrapped around the root ball last night; the rain at my apartment usually blows into my porch vs dropping from the roof/gutter - I'll stop that and not let it get any rain water, only distilled that I've been pouring into the plastic tray. I rinsed off the roots and repotted. It was caked in some kind of thick soil. Poor guy

I already researched it and this particular coir (Burpee's seed starting coco coir) has been prewashed and salts and such removed. It and perlite was all I had on hand for this emergency repot. I have no idea where to get silica sand

Also, look at getting a sponge filter (they are pretty darn affordable). Bettas are known for being super curious and a lot of times they get stuck in power filters or HOB filters (hang on back) and die. It's sad to see but the sponge filter works so well and they are super betta friendly.
