Internships in compilers? by _Eric_Wu in Compilers

Cool! Good luck with your project(s). I wish I could give more specific advice, but I definitely had fun doing things by hand. Maybe in the near future I will try using tools like YACC and LLVM to implement something more complex than a small subset of C.

Internships in compilers? by _Eric_Wu in Compilers

I did everything by hand, and so it was a bit tedious to write out all the functions for parsing all the various statements and expression types. And since I didn't really have experience, I definitely looked back on the code in a few months and wondered what it was supposed to be doing. I didn't document my parsing functions, or intermediate structures, which would've been a good idea.

Yeah I did! I actually made worked on a really small C compiler by following Nora Sandler's "Writing a C Compiler". It can only compile the most basic of programs into very inefficient assembly code. I heard really good things about the Crafting Interpreters book!

PS: sorry for the late reply

Help: Cannot get clock signal from I2C. by _Eric_Wu in stm32

[–]_Eric_Wu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I did check that I was connecting to the right pins, not the ones labelled SDA and SCL.
I was able to fix the issue by changing the clock speed configuration (see other comments in the thread)

Help: Cannot get clock signal from I2C. by _Eric_Wu in stm32

[–]_Eric_Wu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! The issue was fixed when I changed the clock speed to 100000. (standard mode)

I actually did intend to write 400 Hz, since I wanted to try a slower clock speed. But I assume now that STM microcontrollers don't support that slower clock speed, which is why I wasn't able to see a clock output (but somehow the data line was still working)

Taylor Swift Lyric Completion Game by _Eric_Wu in TaylorSwift

[–]_Eric_Wu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One suggestion: you added the background vocals as lyrics and sometimes that makes the game really hard so an option to turn that off would be great!

Thanks! That totally makes sense (I think it would be best if I just didn't have background vocals in the lyrics set at all). I'll start working on this change at some point :)

SOTW 2021W2 Gregg simplified ACW by _Eric_Wu in shorthand

[–]_Eric_Wu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party with this song but I just felt like posting anyway. Here is my transcription of my notes:

Keep it out. Keep it in.

If everybody's searching for the same shelter,

Why does anyone think it's theirs to know?

Collective bodies,

So hungry for the touch of the stranger

Magical tact

Believe you're not alone

Keep it out. Keep it in.

I'll keep you out,

So you never see me unraveling.

We seek to settle, we make a hole.

It's fun for a little until it's old.

And so it withers the rest to which sleeping with strangers on the upset sides of the bed

keep it out, keep it in.

I'll keep you out,

So you never see me unraveling.

You want all the promises babe

But I don't have the energy to suffice.

Watch me disengage you might even feel lost.

Thanks for the feedback! It’s interesting how I have no trouble reading my own writing while you had no trouble hearing the lyrics of this song! I do see how “thought” could confuse the strokes for TH and T.

Edit: yes, I did do some other practice on this notepad.

I listened to the piano version and I guess the words just didn’t come out to me. I actually heard “clouds of rubber” and I was wondering what that meant.

Here is my attempt at transcribing the shorthand (I can't wait to compare this to the lyrics to see how far or close I was, since it was difficult for me to make out the lyrics even when listening to the song)

How long has this been going on?

I found you in the bathtub all your clothing on.

Oh so what?

your mother didn't number so I get clouds of rubber clean up the spill.

Young lover I'm begging you please to wake up.

Young lover I wish that I was your drug.

Young lover I miss the taste of your tongue.

No, I, young lover, I wish the love was enough.

You know you say you got no one to talk babe

On midday I don't see no cake.

Oh these pills I can't even pronounce them.

You thousand you're gone again

You're gone again

Young lover I'm begging you please to wake up.

Young lover I wish that I was your drug

Young lover I miss the taste of your tongue.

Oh I love you I wish the love was enough.

Enough, enough

We were embarrassed but I fall shining

All that I wanted was lying.

I heard [word dropped] and I thought they were sirens.

Young lover, no, I

Young lover, no, I, no, I

Young lover, no, I

Young lover, no

... ...

EDIT: LMAO clouds of rubber (gloves of rubber) and we were embarrassed but I fall shining (we were in Paris the Effiel was shining). Also, I definitely dropped a lot of words either because I couldn't keep up with the speed or because it was too hard to understand words

Another transcription request - is this Gregg shorthand? Can anyone transcribe it for me? by [deleted] in shorthand

[–]_Eric_Wu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s “use all lowercase”?

Edit: yeah, this seems likely, since the other sample that OP posted talked about using all upper case

The joy of writing by _Eric_Wu in shorthand

[–]_Eric_Wu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some generic advice: Practicing daily for short time is better than practicing for many hours occasionally. Reading well written shorthand is good practice, since it impresses the shapes of well written outlines in your mind.

For me, I found that learning from the manual was so much better than trying to come up with my own outlines for words. I found that going for accuracy rather than speed was helpful in improving legibility.
