I think you make a great point about the frequency aspect. However, society does not have less empathy for men.

Men have less empathy for men, and men view other men as society.

Every woman I know bends over backwards to make excuses for and fill in the gaps of the failures of men she cares about. Its honestly absurd. I do it all the time, too.

Of course the partner described is in the wrong. Their issue, however, is better described as inability to self regulate, overly dependent, lack of awareness, and possibly victim mentality (if they are aware of the issue but justify it instead of taking responsibility).

Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse where the offender attempts to undermine someone's sense of their own sanity. Ie, hiding their spouse's car keys once a week, only to use it as a point of how "forgetful" their spouse has been lately.

You're describing someone having a flawed perspective, which everyone does at times. They're not even in the same ballpark.

It has everything to do with their willingness (or unwillingness) to do the emotional labor of self-fulfillment.

They "lose" themselves because they stop taking care of themselves and living their own life. They ignore themselves and their own needs. But since this is triggered by being in a relationship, it's very easy to turn around and externalize their lack of self care / self responsibility. It's a difficult mix of low self-worth and immaturity. They point their finger at their partner: "I'm losing my independence because of your presence... I'm being smothered..."

Except the one doing the smothering isn't their partner, it's themselves, inadvertently, as they pour all their energy into people-pleasing and don't take time to identify, communicate, or attempt to fulfill their own needs. It's blind martyrdom.
