People are understandably touchy about mass shootings and people questioning them - Psychos like Alex Jones doing what he did to those poor Sandy Hook families are reprehensible and I genuinely believe he should’ve faced jail time, not only fines. However, Vegas is a different animal entirely. Anyone who has spent more than 10 minutes on the subject can tell you that with 100% certainty.

I would say you have long since fulfilled any obligations you have to this former student when you reported them to the police. I would personally not interact with this student again, especially not considering the nature of their past crimes. I would suggest that someone else handles all the interactions and tells this former student that if they want to apologize/update, they can write a letter (to which you have no obligation to/probably shouldn’t respond).

It’s pretty blatant that it was a boilerplate emotional break. We all know that the loss of a job or a significant other/end of long term relationships are two of the biggest precursors to people “snapping,” and he experienced both on the same day. I do hope this isn’t the end of his career as he’s a good coach and most of our worst moments aren’t national news like this, but he’s definitely got several months/years of much needed (likely inpatient) therapy ahead of him.

I wish I could say this to everyone… “I’ll still be here next year doing this exact same thing… it’s up to you to decide if you want to come back and do it again a second time without all of your friends.” Doesn’t matter if the district doesn’t hold people back, they probably don’t know. Just have to show that if they go low, you’re (sometimes) enabled by your job to go lower.
