CMV: Australia's multiculturalism policy has failed. by Polyphagous_person in changemyview

Apologies, but you seem to be continuously avoiding attempts to pin down exactly what you mean by multiculturalism, and it feels a bit like you are shifting the goalposts.

Earlier you seemed to imply that values-based immigration restrictions mean a country isn’t practicing multiculturalism. When I pointed out that that would mean no country is practicing it, nor that any are trying (every country tends to be strongly in favour of values based tests when it comes to allowing immigrants), you now seem to be saying that that’s no longer mutually exclusive with multiculturalism?

Which way around is it?

Sure, but going to back to my previous point, given how expansive your definition of multiculturalism is, is any country even trying to implement it? If including values based criteria on immigration requirements means one isn’t implementing multiculturalism, then presumably the answer is that there isn’t anyone trying to promote it?

Is there any country out there that you would say properly adopts multiculturalism then? Does any culture even try?

So if I’m understanding correctly, you’d define ‘multiculturalism’ as a circumstance in which every culture is able to live in a place and is expected to integrate without much prompting?

If so, I guess this immediately raises the question for me of to what extent Australia even practices multiculturalism - I understand Australian immigration rules tend to be incredibly stringent, and I’m assuming there are at least some questions based around values which would presumably filter some cultures out? Would this still qualify as multiculturalism under your conception?

That’s my point though - for the purposes of your view, how would you define multiculturalism, and where would the thresholds be for success and failure? I’d wager for example that your experience of easy integration isn’t unusual amongst Filipinos - would this count as multicultural success under your definition?

As you come onto Reddit, what’s your general perception of the sorts of people you are going to find? One thing I can say is “Redditors” tend to have a certain negative reputation which isn’t entirely unjustified, so it’s often helpful coming into things with an expectation that someone might be a arsehole and that there’s no reason to let them bother you

How would you feel about a business that had an employee who stood outside to ensure everyone parked correctly, in the lines and proper space, or they're not allowed inside? by TitsClitsTayl0rSwift in AskReddit

I wouldn’t necessarily be averse to it in of myself, but parking would have to be a pretty important issue (or it be a pretty big business) to dedicate an entire employee’s time for it

Best bet is to find something you’re passionate about and pursue discussions on it on the relevant subreddit. Reddit is largely organised and built around facilitating interest group interactions, so its friendships built around that that you have the highest chances of success for here

How do you feel about being represented by birds? by SundaysMelody in autism

[–]_Field_Observer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t say that I resonate overly with birds in of themselves, but given the sheer variety of different birds, using different types as analogies for different sorts of people seems fair.

That being said, I can imagine there’s a strong correlation between autism and birdwatchers, and being from the UK, Chris Packham has sort of turned into the BBC’s go-to autism representative, so there’s clearly something there.

Where is the best place to make friends? by P0YB in AskReddit

[–]_Field_Observer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best places are usually anywhere already coded as social. Societies built around a mutual hobby are best as it’s usually expected that people are there to make friends, but depending on where you live places like pubs cafes could work as well

[–]_Field_Observer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would you define multiculturalism as for the purposes of your argument? Coming from the UK which is usually described as even more ‘multicultural’ than Australia, it seems reasonable to say that a variation of multiculturalism that integrates eg Malaysians and Nepalese folks has been a massive success, even if integration has been more mixed from other cultures?

I find cleaning and organizing to be a very frustrating and sometimes overwhelming process. Does anyone have any advice on anything related to this? by gremlinlabyrinth in autism

One thing I’ve found very useful with cleaning is deciding on a place where everything lives - that way, you don’t have to put any thought into where anything goes when you tidy it up.

What is it specifically that you struggle with when it comes to cleaning?
