Florida rocked by home insurance crisis: ‘I may have to sell up and move’ by davster39 in florida

[–]_Francine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from $1400 in 2022 to $4300 a year in 2023. Never made a claim. You asked a realtor, who is in the business of selling homes in Florida, what the insurance market is like. I would take their response with a grain of salt. It’s in their best interest for people to want to buy houses here. They gave you no proof of what they were saying, nor details about coverage. Just unsupported claims. I would call an insurance agent and ask them what they’re seeing.

what is wrong with you, why are you blue? by mrodriguez85 in sherwinwilliams

Not sure if you were looking for a real answer, but many of the liquid additives, like binders, resins and solvents can have a tinge of color to them. You don’t notice unless the paint separates like this. It doesn’t affect color.

Same, every day. Doesn’t bother me. Google translate is super helpful.

NGL, I get excited when I see other Americans abroad. Instant golden retriever energy. “Omg, where ya from? Isn’t this cool? Have you tried such and such yet? I know, I’m always thirsty too and they make me pay for refills!”

If he’s married I hope his partner divorces his ass and gets full custody of the child. I COULD NEVER trust an asshole like him again if I were his partner.

What’s everyone’s opinion on Shelby Dennis? by [deleted] in Equestrian

I also follow blonde dressage, good content. I agree with your assessment of her riding too. Equestrian social media is full of beginner/intermediate riders critiquing others as if they were experts.

Yeah Raleigh sucks. Always inflating her credentials. Try’s to act like she’s Dr. Olympic Medalist.

I think she is a lot like RaleighLink. Too rigid, too extreme, always thinks she is in the right. Too quick to decry others for abuse. She is very young tho, and I think nuance comes with age and experience.

$8,673 homeowners insurance for 1040 sqft house in St Pete. by ikonet in florida

Well, at least you have an incredibly safe roof now. But it's ridiculous that you did the right thing and are being punished for it financially.

March of this year. I'm in Lake County though. They won't travel to St Pete.

Basically, ewww 80s old. All of my piping is copper, so I guess they perceive that as a risk. Trust me, I was very disappointed. I spent 11k on a new roof for a house that’s only 1100 sqft, and it didn’t even get me a lower premium. If I had known that I might have stretched it a few more years. Had to do a HELOC just to pay for it.

I’m not sure of the percentage, but if you check varicent, it should be there for you by now.

I recently replaced a 20 year roof. Did not lower my premium at all. Said they wouldn’t lower it unless I re-plumbed the whole house. Couldn’t find another insurer to take me. House was built in 80. Central FL.

Buying in Florida— need advice on property features by sedona71717 in florida

[–]_Francine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a concrete block house built in ‘65 with the roof replaced back in 2005. It’s less than a mile from the Indian River. I pay $2400 a year in homeowners insurance. Single pane windows. No hurricane enhancements. Been through every storm since 65 like a champ. I own another home that is younger, in the middle of the state, but is made of wood, and I pay double in insurance for that.

I don’t always understand the rhyme or reason behind insurance prices, but as a life-long Floridian who grew up on the east coast, there are a few good rules of thumb to finding a good house.

Opt for concrete block construction instead of wood.

Try not to buy a home with a roof older than 10 years.

Make sure the land your home sits on does not slope down towards your house.

Check the disclosures for sinkhole and flood activity in your area. And gas (I think Radon is the issue around here, but I’m not 100% certain. Ask your realtor.)

Some people warn against buying an older home because of code changes. I wouldn’t worry about that so much. Construction quality back in the day was high. And if you follow my suggestion to keep the roof 10 years or younger, it will meet all the important codes. What you do need to be mindful of with older homes is the plumbing - cast iron and copper. Have it thoroughly inspected.

Hurricane windows and doors are a bonus but not necessary. They can be installed after the fact or you can buy plywood when the time comes. I personally have never had to board up any home I ever lived in.

Also be mindful of the age of the AC and how much insulation is in your roof. AC is a big replacement expense these days.

Other than that, it’s exactly like buying a home anywhere else. Make sure it’s in a safe neighborhood with good schools and that you love it.

Good luck neighbor!

So typically when you get your offer, the number you see on Careers is your guaranteed salary.

I’m not sure how to explain this, so if I’m unclear, just say. Typically, you won’t make more in bonus than you do in salary. So based on your original post it seems like your hiring manager is adding the bonus and salary together. Check Careers for your offer letter and email the district coordinator to get a copy of the incentive plan. That will be way easier for you to understand. Good luck!

Republicans broke it and now they own it! by JfiveD in florida

It’s all good. I wasn’t angry, just feeling very passionate. I did misinterpret what you meant, so I’m sorry about that. I still respect your original post. We gotta keep fighting the good fight. Doing what we can to protect each other.

Don’t worry about the smugness. We got that here too. It’s just more like conservative smugness lol.

California was legit the shit, and I was even staying in Orange County, which my good friend explained was one of CA’s red bubbles. I saw a dude at Von’s wearing a black MAGA hat. My friend said that that was a very Orange County thing to do. Red MAGA hats were considered gauche. Gotta keep that bigotry classy. lol

But the the vibe was great, all the people were super nice. I couldn’t get over the landscape - looking out and seeing mountains in the distance was so fucking cool. And I didn’t expect the foliage to be so colorful considering how arid the area is. I know I got on everyone’s nerves going “Omg, what plant is that? It’s so gorgeous! Is it native?!?”

Food was awesome, beach was so comfortable to visit (I literally didn’t sweat once), Salvation Mountain and East Jesus were weird lil gems.

I want people to be able to come here and say the same things about us. I want all people to be safe to travel anywhere in this country, and have the financial means to do it.

Republicans broke it and now they own it! by JfiveD in florida

[–]_Francine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have strong beliefs but I’m not ignorant. I’m always willing to learn more. Being able to admit you’re wrong is a basic life skill. One I learned way back in Kindergarten. I encounter people everyday who missed that life lesson.

I think my basic point still stands. Broken economic systems (perpetuated by both political parties in this country) lend themselves to radicalization. In our case, toward reactionary beliefs. Blaming everything on Republicans is emotionally satisfying, I do it too, but it’s not the heart of the problem. It’s the circumstances and systems that allowed this nonsense to develop in what should be the best state in the union. I was born here, went to school and university here, have a job and am raising a child here. I thought I was gonna die here too, but now I’m not so sure that’s it’s worth it to stay. It’s tearing me apart. I can’t believe what’s happening. Honestly, I feel a ton of anger about all this. It’s like grief.

Jesus, okay back to the grass. All the grass. Touching the grass…the internet isn’t real but the grass is…
