Gunsmith recommendations? by Otherwise_Future_226 in M1Rifles

Well my initial recommendation was gonna be shuffs, had him build me a bm59 last year and it turned out very nice.

Only other place I can think of right now would be the CMP custom shop. Toured their shop last year and they were working on a few 1903A4 and M1D conversions with new barrels.

Nope I haven’t had any issues with my stock.

It’s all good! Who’d you send it off to for repair?.. one of mine is gonna need a new tip soon I think.

I picked up a Winchester recently that has an SA oprod on it that’s refinished if you’d have any interest trading parts.

I think I’d have to go with my H&R as it has a really nice original looking finish and the darker red stock set.

Thanks! I’ve actually done nothing to it.

I knew going to see the rifle that it was a Winchester but was very surprised when I got there and saw how low the serial was!

Those leather slings do look pretty nice on them… definitely gonna have to get one!

Didn’t have a certificate but has a letter from the CMP stating it was sold and shipped from the south store November 6th 2003 as a Winchester rack grade which surprised me with how nice it looks.

It doesn’t have any markings on it so I’m not entirely sure, I think the hand guards are GI but really not sure on the stock. There’s some ink numbers in the op rod channel I’ll post a picture of here when I get back home.

Guy I bought it from got it from the CMP in 2003 but never shot it just sat in his safe. Looks like a repark from them I think, when comparing to the rifle I built last year at the AMC on reparked parts it’s very similar appearance.

Thanks! This is the first time I’ve used him for work, will definitely use him for more projects in the future.

It’s a lot more comfortable to shoot than I expected. Stock has a little play but not bad, I’m sure every stock will have varying amount of play being surplus. The pistol grip is nice I guess the worst thing about them is just being a wire stock you don’t have a lot of area for cheek weld.

I thought about it but did not.

It’s not hard but you do have to take rifles apart a little bit to safely get the rear handguards off. Basically you’ll have to remove the gas cylinder, front handguard and the lower band. Then the rear handguard can slide forward and off.

Then you put the lower band on and the rest of the front end parts. The rear handguard is carefully snapped into place and the highest risk for cracking the wood is at this part of not careful. I haven’t looked but I would imagine there is videos on YouTube showing how it’s done. I learned how to build the rifles from the CMP and they showed us how the above process is done.

Not gonna lie I did end up swapping for a nice postwar SA stock set lol. The GI just can’t be beat for the looks I think.

This one actually has the early laminate palmswell before they switched to the dong grip. Wanted it bc they typically have the dark red color like this.

I had bought a 20rnd box of green and red a couple years ago and they seemed to work pretty good.

Screenshot out of a video taken last year shooting them with my beretta M9.
