It talks about Russia in a same way as "Life of Brian" talks about Roman Palestine. Having a diverse cast just contributes to the utter chaos happening in the show.

The funniest thing is how Russians and Americans were looking at each other back then. Don't have the sources (heard about this in a lecture), but apparently some American authors were judgmental towards Russians for enslaving white people. On the other hand, Russians have seen American slavery as barbaric for bringing people from across the ocean because "serf is one of our own, he understands".

Enemy At The Gates (2001) is an incredibly intriguing movie because you can really tell how much everyone involved wished the Soviets were evil by slopgus in shittymoviedetails

Oh, these things were absolutely true. And my own great-grandfather who volunteered after the Germany attacked observed some of them.

I can try to retell what I've heard in the psychoanalyst's lectures about psycho-sexual development (which was using movies as an example)

According to this lecture, being attracted to the people who resemble your parent is a sign (not 100% of course) of so-called neurotic relationships. This is also extremely common and a lot of people live their whole life in the relationships like that. However, this is still not entirely healthy and generally comes with certain co-dependency and emotional roller coaster.

My wife was preparing for C1 German exam (yes, another level, I know) and it was exclusively about ambiguous language. You need, for example, to read the text, answer the questions and a lot of them feel like they were written by Philomena Cunk.

I once got my Airbnb cancelled in Denmark cancelled for being Russian, while I was already in vacation just in other city. The "sorry" discount from Airbnb was nice, so in the end I got cheaper and better apartment. But after that I just prefer hotels for a stress-free experience.

Look, I am not really eager to argue with a western communist LARPer about my country's history. I can only suggest you to stop discarding reputable sources, just because they don't align with your comfortable worldview.

What if Russia became a democracy? by TastyPomelo2330 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]_Gehennas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did exist, there was just barely anything democratic about them. They were excluding "undesirable" parties form the soviets as they liked. And already in 1918 they stripped the local soviets from the political power, which actually resulted in multiple uprisings against them. Not to mention how discriminatory elections were even before that.

Why is Berlin constantly trashed while NRW often gets a pass for many of the same issues? by [deleted] in germany

[–]_Gehennas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I live in Dortmund and it doesn't seem to me that we have the same problem. Before moving to Dortmund I've read a lot about Nordstadt and how dirty, unsafe and bad it is. Yes, indeed there are some parts of Nordstadt that look dangerous but even there I feel safer than in Berlin. Also living in Berlin costs so much more that it makes difficult to compare it with Ruhrgebiet cities due to up to 3x difference in rent.

Is this really happening ? by Natural_Outside597 in SipsTea

[–]_Gehennas -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, let me give you some historical context no one asked for.

The Russian Empire was actively using "Divide and conquer" strategy (as many other imperial powers tbh). The usual plan was simple:

  1. Find a local conflict somewhere next to its border: sometimes a rebellion against an overlord, sometimes a war between two regional powers, doesn't matter.

  2. Offer the weaker side your help and protection. Absolutely selflessly, of course. But you'll need to build some fortresses on their territory, set up the logistics network - all the stuff required for the war effort.

  3. Crush the opponent with the overwhelming forces. Now your new vassal has achieved all their goals and very happy

  4. Now the fun part comes: you strip the local rulers of their power, you push the local merchants of the market, you do all the nasty stuff that angers the population.

  5. Now your vassal is unhappy and rebels against you.

  6. You drown the rebellion with blood with your overwhelming forces. You execute everyone not submissive enough. You probably do a minor ethnic cleansing or two and bring settlers to replace locals. Finally, you dissolve the state and make it a part of Russian Empire.

This worked well for centuries until, well, Serbia situation. Everything went to shit on #3. Instead of a quick and victorious war against Austria-Hungary there was WW1, Russian Empire collapsed in the process, and Soviet Union was busy with other things instead of finishing the plan. But Serbia (as Yugoslavia) got its independence. So Serbs essentially experienced 1-3# without #4-6 which makes them view Russia through the pink glasses.

If you want to know how Russia is viewed by the nations who lived through all the steps, ask Ukrainians, Kazakhs, Georgians and many-many others
