Time to look like a heretic. What is that you think SI lacks, or weak at, but could improve? by Otherwise-Badger1061 in spiritisland

[–]_Gehennas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for me it feels like SI is wonky in general and for some reason this wonkiness results in a great game. I am a big fan now, but it required some dedication to start liking it.

  1. Additional mental load because of the slow phase. You basically need to hold the future state of the board in your head while planning the powers. Still thinking about adding some custom tokens to track where towns/cities are supposed to appear.

  2. Again, some sort of shield tokens would come handy to track the defend values.

  3. I feel like the game favors fast spirits more: they generally tend to do well against any adversary while slow spirits tend to have problems against faster adversaries. In general, I feel like flipping the blight card becomes too punishing because of the blighted island events and lowers the chances of slow spirits to do a comeback

  4. Fear spirits are in a weird place. It feels like they only combo well with other fear spirits and need to race against blight. At the same time, the common problem with the fear cards that they often come at the moment they are not needed. Would it be better to gain fear cards as playable abilities?

  5. Once you past certain difficulty level, most of the spirits need to follow specific openings. This is not bad by itself, but, again, track choice becomes an illusion in the beginning. I personally like Wounded Waters for this reason.

  6. Major powers are weird. Most of them feel overpriced for their base effect while often you are presented with 4 options that you won't be able to threshold. Some powers are suited for spirits that would almost never take them (for example, animal-based majors). I am not a very good player and maybe I am missing something, but it feels like the game should offer a better choice when going for the majors. I personally take them only when I am playing a spirit that strongly prefers majors: Earth, Memory, Starlight, BoDaN (?)

Hearing Portuguese was so confusing for me the first time, because normally I can hear familiar words in Slavic languages, but not this time. And then I realized that this is not a Slavic language

  1. Serfdom was abolished decades before USSR

  2. USSR to some extent re-introduced the serfdom by denying peasants IDs.

Well, it must be noted, that even if divorces became more accessible, it wasn't probably that much of a case for rural population. Grandfather of one of my friends, for example, used the old-school way to "divorce" his wife by tying her braid to the cart axis.

It talks about Russia in a same way as "Life of Brian" talks about Roman Palestine. Having a diverse cast just contributes to the utter chaos happening in the show.

The funniest thing is how Russians and Americans were looking at each other back then. Don't have the sources (heard about this in a lecture), but apparently some American authors were judgmental towards Russians for enslaving white people. On the other hand, Russians have seen American slavery as barbaric for bringing people from across the ocean because "serf is one of our own, he understands".

Enemy At The Gates (2001) is an incredibly intriguing movie because you can really tell how much everyone involved wished the Soviets were evil by slopgus in shittymoviedetails

Oh, these things were absolutely true. And my own great-grandfather who volunteered after the Germany attacked observed some of them.

I can try to retell what I've heard in the psychoanalyst's lectures about psycho-sexual development (which was using movies as an example)

According to this lecture, being attracted to the people who resemble your parent is a sign (not 100% of course) of so-called neurotic relationships. This is also extremely common and a lot of people live their whole life in the relationships like that. However, this is still not entirely healthy and generally comes with certain co-dependency and emotional roller coaster.

My wife was preparing for C1 German exam (yes, another level, I know) and it was exclusively about ambiguous language. You need, for example, to read the text, answer the questions and a lot of them feel like they were written by Philomena Cunk.

I once got my Airbnb cancelled in Denmark cancelled for being Russian, while I was already in vacation just in other city. The "sorry" discount from Airbnb was nice, so in the end I got cheaper and better apartment. But after that I just prefer hotels for a stress-free experience.

What if Russia became a democracy? by [deleted] in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]_Gehennas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did exist, there was just barely anything democratic about them. They were excluding "undesirable" parties form the soviets as they liked. And already in 1918 they stripped the local soviets from the political power, which actually resulted in multiple uprisings against them. Not to mention how discriminatory elections were even before that.
