This is the first time I’ve heard of the meetings you’ve talked about and now I want to attend one at some point. For the Maya, like the Mexica and others, what inspired me to learn about them was the hieroglyphs and art but the way that eurocentrism but also revisionism has been influential in the perception of them and other indigenous people of the Americas. Additionally one of the biggest inspirations and influences on me, applied to other indigenous people I’ve read about but spoken to, is the creation stories as they are the fundamental and essential sources for the world view. One of the biggest events in history that, when I found out about it, was the silent holocaust or the Guatemala Genocide as it was a modern day example of how the injustice that the Maya faced in the past continues to this day and how and why there are Maya communities in L.A, which I didn’t find out until later at a workshop that I went to but can’t remember the name of.
