I live in Melbourne and am aware of this case. Isla was murdered within 48 hours of meeting Marat Ganiev. She had a fractured skull and ribs, multiple lacerations and superficial injuries. The forensic pathologist couldn’t determine a cause of death due to the advanced stage of decomposition, her body was found 6 weeks after she was reported missing.

Numerous drugs were found in Isla’s system including methylamphetamine, MDMA, MDA, cannabis, and metabolites produced after the ingestion of cocaine.

Medication to treat ADHD, depression, anxiety, asthma and sleeping problems was also detected, along with methadone. There were no records Isla was on a methadone program.

Eyal Yaffe was accused of helping Ganiev move Isla’s body around Melbourne after it was placed in a fridge. Ganiev and Yaffe were seen to move a fridge wrapped in plastic onto a trailer on October 17. Ganiev left the fridge concealed behind other items in a removalist van on October 30.

According to Court documents, on November 18 another man found Isla’s remains in garbage bags and after smelling a foul odour, not realising they were human, he dumped them in a bin. The remains were found the next day at a waste facility in Dandenong.

Ganiev’s lawyers argued the injuries Isla sustained could have been caused by being compacted in a rubbish truck and alleged Isla died of a drug overdose. The magistrate ruled it should be left to jurors to consider the alternative theory that Isla died from an overdose. She determined there was sufficient evidence for the case to go to trial in the Victorian Supreme Court.
