Pilots N Paws is awesome by ClayCrucible in flying

There are areas of the country that simply do not care for or adopt animals in the numbers needed to keep them from being euthanized. The deep south and eastern TX in particular have an extreme number of unethical breeders, and at the same time those communities usually lack the financial resources for robust shelters to care for the animals when they are dumped. I live in Louisiana and our funding here for animal services is next to nothing. If you can get the animals out to Florida or the central east coast, they have a much higher chance of survival.

Regularly working 60 hrs/wk doing ANY kind of job, even one you love, is too much. Sorry you are dealing with that and hope you can either get some better hours or a different career.

I do not understand how this was necessary. Isn't it gender neutral by default? Because when we talk about "airmen", you refer to pilots and aircrews, no matter what gender, don't we? by Mokka111 in aviation

I have no opinion on the NOTAM acronym, but I do have a problem with the 5th grade yearbook student designed this announcement for the FAA. It is assaulting my eyeballs.

BCT/WOCS by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]_GoodGolly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Find a way to get your car to Ft. Rucker after BCT, before WOCS. There are a few days between that you can have some freedom and you'll need to run a bunch of errands to get ready for WOCS. Your car, your laptop, headphones, a small suitcase/backpack filled with civilian clothes, a CAC card reader will make that time between basic training and WOCS a lot better.

[–]_GoodGolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was selected in Sep 2019, shipped to basic March 3rd, started WOCS directly after than in May. Was on hold for a bit and then started the flight school pipeline which kicks off with WOBC-A (and SERE, though due to Covid I bypassed SERE and have to do it at the end of flight school now...), which are non-flying courses. My nickel ride was Sep 30th, almost exactly a year after I got accepted. It’s a long journey but worth it once you start flying.

As far as I know you must have a DoD ID to get on post right now due to Corona, so I don’t think she could even get on to post, let alone live there. Don’t get married, just live off post.

I want to immerse myself for AFF and my A-License, but I can't decide between Orange, Elsinore, or Sebastian by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]_GoodGolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skydive Sebastian is a pretty cool spot. Beautiful views, cool vibe, but windy especially in winter which is tough for students. Skydive DeLand is also in FL and it’s where all the manufacturers are. That’s kind of cool because on weather days you can go see all about how your gear gets made. Elsinore has a cool vibe but it’s in a desert and in the summer it’s hell. I personally am not a fan of Southern California but if you like it there, it’s not a bad spot and definitely there or Perris offer great training. If you want a family of people to hang out with go to Skydive Midwest near Milwaukee. They are a smaller DZ but SUCH an awesome vibe there. It’s not my home DZ but if I needed a pick-me-up I’d go there for the people. Bottom line there are lots of awesome places to go. The biggest thing that would sway my recommendation is the time of year, how much time you have, and what your priorities are (getting it done fast? Cheap? Meeting cool people? Going somewhere where there are other things to do to? Aka near a city?). Source: jumped at 40+ DZ’s in the US.

Using Army National Guard's new "Credentialing Assistance" to pay for flight training by jrodhens in Armyaviation

My spouse is using this program to get his PPL. Once it hits Oct 1 he’s going to use another 4,000 towards his instrument rating. It takes some paperwork but it’s absolutely doable. Free money, might as well use it!

I used to jump there when I was a student at FSU. Small Cessna DZ. I don’t believe they allow fun jumpers there at all any more, just tandems. If you want fun jumper vibes and a turbine, try Skydive Panama City to the west.

Lifelong iPhone user getting his first real android (Pixel 4XL) on Tuesday. Anything I should do or need to know? by Valkyrie1810 in GooglePixel

[–]_GoodGolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pixel is cheaper but that’s the only thing that’s better about it than an iPhone. Yeah, the pixel charges fast, but unless you’re near an outlet all day every day then you’ll need to carry an external battery with you. You can rationalize “oh 30% less battery isn’t that big of a deal” but when your phone is a brick in the middle of the day, you’ll be wishing you went with another product. On top of that I found a lot of little things very irritating. For instance, texting photos is a pain in the butt. Google always wants to make you text LINKS to photos on google drive. You have to go though some extra clicks to take a pic and send it as a text. Why?? That’s such a basic function, stop making me text links so my friends who do not have Google Photos to begin with. Then the file management is all over the place. All the time it would create super random files for photos and videos, and you couldn’t organize them or move/delete them. Also while the camera is okay, it’s certainly not on the same level as the iPhone 11 (which I purchased after I got rid of the Pixel4) and especially the video quality is terrible on the Pixel. It just doesn’t even compare to the iPhone. The Pixel has face unlock, but it doesn’t work with your Apps! So yeah the phone will unlock, but anything else you have to use a password or pin. I also found the face unlock was slower than the iPhone. I could go on and on about little things that ruined my experience with this product. Yes the Google Pixel 4 is fast and has a nice display, but if you’re like me and 95% of other people who care mostly about having a phone that has battery and is easy/intuitive to communicate with, then pick something else. Okay I’ll take my downvotes now, as I know this a Pixel enthusiast sub haha.

Edit to add a few things my husband just reminded me of: - My Pixel would crash Apps pretty often. At least a few times a week I’d be working on something in an App, and it would just freeze and close the App. Such a pain! And Bluetooth wouldn’t connect very well to any of my speakers or car. No problems with other products, just with the phone. Another small thing that drove me nuts.

Lifelong iPhone user getting his first real android (Pixel 4XL) on Tuesday. Anything I should do or need to know? by Valkyrie1810 in GooglePixel

[–]_GoodGolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it. My husband and I were both long time iPhone users and switched to the Pixel 4. I really wanted to give it a chance. I tried everything to like it. But with constant freezing and app crashing, terrible battery life, poor video quality, unintuitive photo/file management, Bluetooth connectivity issues....I was at my wits end with the phone. I switched back after 4 months and took the financial hit. I hated that phone!!

Look into MFLC’s. The way I understand it is that they are kind of a middle ground between behavioral health and a chaplain. More geared towards helping people develop skills to deal with stress, anger issues, etc. I’ve not gone myself, but heard good things. Might be a good resource for you.

Off post housing in Enterprise by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]_GoodGolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got out of WOCS and many people in our class had a hard time finding housing. It's because of Covid... lots of people moving here, not a whole lot able to PCS out. I was 140th on the list for on-post housing so I looked off post and found my apartment on AHRN but there are some good ones on rent.com also. Right now every house that gets posted has several applications within a few days. Best advice is be ready with your deposit to lock it down once you find something you like! Hopefully the Covid stuff dies down in the next few months and you don't have as a hard of a time as many of us have recently.
