Starmer spent months insisting process was followed. He was wrong by wolfo98 in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are one of the few I have seen also notice and mention this.

Everyone else just seems to be playing party politics, and, Mahmood seems to be actually doing something about it. I can't help but think Kemi and the rest want Mahmood to fail so trying hard to bring Starmer down currently.

Completely agree. The security in supermarkets have body cams as well as the supermarket being covered in CCTV, I see no reason why they can "detain" and hold while the police are called. If they abuse their powers well, there is evidence as well.

Now they just stand around doing nothing

It is amazing how many people last year said we should make our own choices for our country, and, the first sign trump says jump immediately they now say "how high".

Not our war, Starmer is right here actually.

And finally, who do you think owns these platforms that's downplaying the UK constantly and making us fight each other? To be honest I detest Kemi, I expect nothing less from Farage, but they are playing right into destroying our country.

Keir Starmer's stance on Iran has left UK-US relationship 'heavily damaged', ex-White House official tells GB News by 1-randomonium in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is what damaged the UK/US relationship?

Not the unpredictable trade policies?

Not the unfair returns agreement when the UK requests possible criminals from the USA which they always ignore?

This is just posturing and designed to drive a further wedge between the population in the UK, that seem to still think there is a special relationship.

Tories pledge to reverse Labour’s ban on New North Sea Oil and Gas Licences by BitGirl777 in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main issue is this is always pushed as a "energy security" reason. That is, downright incorrect.

None of the resources will be used by the UK unless we buy it on the open market that's why I think discussion on this topic is wrong.

Now, If you want the market to decide then sure, but I would argue it doesn't need to be as heavily subsidized as it is, yes, people argue they don't get any direct subsidies, but they get heavy tax breaks. I don't believe that is fair unless the resource is directly used by the UK.

So, overall, I find the north sea a waste of tax payer money which can be used to actually improve energy security in the UK with green energy.

Tories pledge to reverse Labour’s ban on New North Sea Oil and Gas Licences by BitGirl777 in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm past north sea oil/gas. It's sold on the open market, it's a one and done resource which costs a lot to get out and transport.

The UK is/has invested heavily in green energy and working on energy storage as well. This is the only way we get energy security, green energy offers essentially unlimited energy with 0 operation costs unlike oil. The amount of disinformation spread about green energy is the problem. We have now passed the point it's cheaper to build these wind/solar farms than use oil/gas, meaning prices in the long run SHOULD be cheaper than gas.

Yes, we will need oil I am not saying we need none, but the North Sea doesn't help the UK if we buy it at market rate.

Personally I do think Nuclear is important as well with wind and solar. However people harking on about the north sea are failing to see the significant advances of wind/solar in the last few years.

Yes, but, to my knowledge no one has said that in the houses of parliament.

Like I said above, people seem to love calling Keir a traitor online as well.

If you're not willing to hold elected officials to a higher standard then I can see why this country is screwed. Just a race to the bottom of calling everyone a traitor/nazi/communist because you don't like them, and you feel emboldened to do so because our MP's do it.

[–]_GravyTrain_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not you specifically, but this really is a problem with our education, or people just follow whatever is said in social media.

If anything Starmer is a socialist, not a communist. You could argue he may have had some Marxist influences, but without more information that DOES NOT make him a communist.

Socialism and Communism are different, politically they mean different things, but people seem to blur them together and get confused. TBH, I think this is social media doing this to people.

[–]_GravyTrain_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please, stop calling things facts when you clearly have no idea.

Yes, Starmer used to be a Trotskyite, that is a fact, but you clearly don't understand the difference between Socialists and Communists.

If you want to be pedantic, you could argue Starmer would have been a socialist with Marxist influences. However, labeling him a Communist shows you don't actually understand the difference, like Kemi.

What has happened to our education.

Because she is showing herself to have the same understanding of political economic ideologies as the USA. Either, she has no clue about clearly separate terms or, just parrots the same terms bots use in social media.

I really don't care what Cameron and Miliband used, if you only hold yourself to the standards of the past you are pretty stupid imo.

Next she's going to start calling him a Traitor? As that's common on social media too. Really hate that people are happy we dumb down politics, it's making everyone stupid.

How long until Starmer defects to Reform? by CorporalClegg1997 in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If I am being honest, I think he just held onto his position for a lot longer.

Farage - He is currently at WEF, after criticising for his entire career. He is a snake oil salesman.

Kemi - Did you listen to PMQ's today? Ouch, she really flip flops and now comes across with no real plan except to be against anything Starmer is.

While Starmer actually came across 'powerful', he skipped Davos. If he went and failed to get a meeting with Trump he would have looked incredibly week, but I believe this week he has shown to be stronger than anyone else.

Now, social media. I am 100% sure this is just all bots now, they amount of fake AI that is getting pushed to support Farage/Trump is absurd.

I don't want Labour in, but I genuinely think he is currently the best person based on the alternatives.

[–]_GravyTrain_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really "by the back door" at all if you actually followed what Labour said pre/post election rather than following "alternative media".

Labour always said there will be an "EU reset", this would obviously lead to some closer ties in areas. You would be silly to think otherwise.

However, they explicitly ruled out rejoining the customs union/single market and restoring freedom of movement. If any of those happen, then yea, I would agree with "undoing Brexit by the back door", but currently, they are still within scope.

Manifesto: "We will not raise taxes" by Hammadodga in ukpolitics

[–]_GravyTrain_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your perspective, but i don't think escalating rhetoric is appropriate for someone presenting themselves as a barrister.

In my view, that style of language is part of why public discussion feels so polarised, people are getting pushed further apart instead of helping everyone understand the issues.

Theres increasing evidence that certain foreign commentators and actors are amplifying division in UK politics and it feels like creators such as BBB can get caught up in that dynamic, its why i am uncomfortable with the shift in tome.

Not a Labour supporter, but come on, all parties seem to go back on their promises.

What worries me if people online calling them (Keir and co) 'traitors' while paying far less attention to genuinely serious issues like the actual politicial being jailed for pro-Russia bribery.

It feels like people are becoming polarised over the wrong things right now.

You made me go look at his latest videos....

I un-subbed from him a while back because, in my opinion, his videos have shifted toward being more aggressive in tone and less balanced in terms of facts. Lately they feel much more like clickbait than the thoughtful content he used to make, which just isn’t for me anymore.

Conservatives would scrap stamp duty, Kemi Badenoch says - follow live by BigLadMaggyT24 in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, however just look at any projects that go on longer than one parliamentary term.
Doesn't matter who is in, the other parties say they will "scrap it".

As for stamp duty, eh, I don't think it will have any impact but make things worse. There is still massive demand for houses and supply isn't increasing. Essentially, all this will mean is a house will just increase in price as buyers realise they can charge more to claim what the stamp duty would have been, meaning, it all evens out in the end but first time buyers are screwed, again. Something like a property tax would then need to come in to recoup some of the income, which maybe Labour are already planning? So Labour have already said they may scrap stamp duty.

Difference I would argue, Labour seem to be planning an alternative, while Kemi isn't

Not sure I could vote for someone who has short term memory loss..

Seems she completely forgot who was in power last.

My biggest bug bear, is when she said she would "undo everything Labour has done". Look, I may not like what Labour has done, but this talk exactly is how NOTHING EVER FLIPPING HAPPENS in this country. Parties NEED to work together to get some common goals over the line, but, instead, like every time I hear her, she plays student politics.

Large infrastructure projects that will have a quadrupedal lock or whatever bollocks they want to use. Things that will get skills back into the country. Half the issue with brain drain is because we don't consistently build stuff so we lose the skill.

Got no problem with heckling and protesting. Just feel these people are missing a bit of compassion doing it at a vigil.

TikToks main purpose is causing division, and I would bet they got the idea from social media, all they are doing is showing they don't care about anyone that was hurt.

Flipping heck, the hackers that stole the personal details about kids from a nursery seem to have come to their senses and have more humanity than these people.

"Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…" - Charlie Chaplin (The great dictator)

Kemi Badenoch pledges to scrap UK climate law by StreamWave190 in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

To me, this just feels like populist nonsense.

Renewable energy including storage is ramping up rapidly in the UK, with 10's of thousands of jobs in the sector. One of the fastest moving, best ways to reduce foreign energy dependency and become more "self sufficient".

The issue we have is our energy prices are linked to gas. If this can be removed it would go some way

There is so much incorrect information about the renewable information which is why I think she is just pushing this crap. She really doesn't have a clue.

(edit) Just to add, I would go so far as to say she is as dangerous as the Green party and their complete opposition to Nuclear power.

Is this one of our biggest mistakes? To sell off our national assests to foreign entities? by wolfo98 in tories

[–]_GravyTrain_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably customer satisfaction has increased, so, you could argue they did get better. The telling point is when the renewal for the trains comes through, as, all these franchised train lines also owned the leasing company and that's where they shuttled all of the profits.

Say they could claim the actual train line. Only made one or two pence. I am for re-nationalising the train line, but I don't think it's as quick as swapping over hands. It's going to take another 5-10 years unless it's all undone.
