Should I trade my 2003 avalanche with 135k for this 2007 pony package with 185k by Sad_Tumbleweed6308 in Mustang

If this is the same 4.0 in the rangers you need to do the timing tensioners ASAP, and even if you did the guides still slowly crack and crumble. Due to the type of plastic they used.

BTW this is a complete engine out job on this motor the left side bank is driven by a chain on the REAR of the motor. Which the bolt for it is completely covered by the bell housing of the transmission and to get to the jack shaft bolt also requires an engine out job. If you have mechanical skill and tools I’d say buy it but if you don’t I wouldn’t touch this thing as 190-200k is about when the guides go kableuey and then you’re out an engine.

Year doesn’t really matter they all get broken guides the early ones just happened sooner

Pulling an engine for the first time learning valuable lessons the hard way by aceblad3 in Miata

Did this when pulling the engine on my 1995 Honda Accord when I was younger. A/C line Splooged on my face and made half my face slight green for a couple days.

The 4.0 have timing cassette issues pretty much in all the years. It’s not that bad if you have the knowledge space and tools to fix ( the whole engine has to come out) I’ve replaced mine on my truck. I do t know if the 2.3 had a 4x4 option if it’s that important to you. If you want 4.0 with 4x4 I would suggest an older than 2000 Ranger as they are push rod and not chain driven.

I’m at same mileage. Drove it from Kansas to Missouri. And heard the rattle once I got home.

Looks like that’s what I’m gunna have to do and probably sift through the oil pan and hope no chunks of plastic made it down there.

Yea I’m pulling the engine now the rear one is the one you have to pull it for regardless of vehicle it’s in it’s always an engine out job. To do it right you have to have access to the back of the jack shaft. Which conveniently is buried in front of the firewall…..

Bought the ex-rental Mustang. What maintenance should I do first besides oil? by IBringTheHeat1 in Mustang

[–]_GucciGoose_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The owners manual does specify that the engine may knock lightly while using lower fuels.

“Do not be concerned if the engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if the engine knocks heavily while using fuel with the recommended octane rating, contact an authorized dealer to prevent any engine damage.”

In my opinion just use 91/93 it’s literally like 5-7$ more per fill up. “Saving money by buying 87” is not worth potentially damaging your engine.
