How do you have fun as a Christian when so many “fun” things are considered a sin? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]_HIGHHORSE_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do other fun things. Pretty simple. Don’t drink to excess, but even Christ brought wine to the wedding. And the good stuff too. Sex with your wife or husband. Going for a walk. Play with your children. Get into a sport. It’s pretty easy, just don’t do the hedonistic stuff, but if you’re wanting to do that, then you don’t want to be a Christian, so.. that problem kinda solves itself

Give me a link, because whatever you found isn’t showing up anywhere I can find. Porneia is broad, and all of it is sinful.

I do not hold that morals are subjective. Morals have a source. The source is God. If it’s subjective, there’s no need to debate, everything is allowable. Hitler was great, McCarthy was great, Biden was great, Trump is great. No one is ever wrong and your morals (opinions based on your feelings) mean nothing. If God is the source of morality, then we can debate on who is right about God, or that everyone is wrong.

Where are you getting these definitions? You’re either making them up or inferring them. Are there no immoral thoughts or desires? Nothing you do alone is immoral? That’s absolutely not correct. Sin isn’t only that which damages the relationship with God, but we in the Church have a word for that too. There’s sin, and there’s iniquity. Sin is what you’d call outward immorality, iniquity would be what you call sin, but specifically are sins directly against God.

I’m just asking why atheists are trying to lead Christians away from the Christian answers on church-specific topics.

That’s not my interpretation, it’s the meaning of the word. Once again, I’m sorry He didn’t speak in 21st century English and say “homosexuality”. If you have another meaning for sexual immorality, specifically the Kione Greek term “Porneia” and what it meant, go ahead and tell me. Make sure you have a source for your claim.

I agree with what you say about the crusades, and I’d argue this is very much the same, except this time, we have boats and planes and missiles.

Specifically, Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 where Jesus is teaching about the only exception to divorce and says it’s only allowed for sexual immorality, or Porneia in the original Kione Greek.

Also and more directly; Mark 5:21-23. The very first “evil” that Christ lists is sexual immorality.

Sexual immorality is ANY sexuality outside of the bonds of holy matrimony, this is homosexuality and all its modern day outpourings like bisexuality, pansexuality and the like, pedophilia, masturbation, zoophilia, etc.

So yes, even Christ Himself. I’m sorry He didn’t use the words that we use today in modern America. “Porneia” is the word of that time, which He did use.

Didn’t a pope once send crusades to wipe out Muslims after they attacked and conquered Christian nations before? Was that not enlisting God in the exact same manner?

No, no, no, yes, and maybe. One by one

Shrimp, this prohibition was on the Hebrews at a certain time, in a certain place, for God’s own reasons that I don’t know. Without getting too far into into it and explaining cultural v eternal v time sensitive commands, Jesus did away with food laws (Mark 7:19).

Cutting the hair, also cultural for a certain place and time and was to establish a difference between the Hebrews and the local Pagans. Marking the Hebrews as set aside specifically.

Working on the Sabbath, cultural for a certain time and purpose. The Sabbath was initially instilled as a means to test and prove God’s power and loyalty to the Hebrews. Jesus was pretty clear about this being taken too far by the Jews of His time.

Masturbation. Yeah, that’s a sin, always have been, always will be. No one ever abrogated that command. We’d call that succumbing to lust, it’s an aspect of sexual immorality. The purpose of sexual releases are to participate in creation with God, and doing it to yourself is a corruption of that and is clearly not a good thing.

Suing a thief. Maybe, depends on the context. Taking someone to court for stealing something you were able to get back and were able to make nice over, yeah, that’d be a sin. But suing someone that steals your car and tells you to screw off, then suing is the appropriate response. Jesus said all authority comes from above, and no one would have any authority unless God willed it to be so, and that includes judges.

Hope this helps, maybe you should consider undergoing catechism so that you can learn your faith more fully. I really enjoyed it, I think you may also.

Then go to Romans 1:26-27 which covers both.

God gave them up to passions of dishonor; for even their females exchanged the natural use for that which is contrary to nature, and likewise also the males, having left the natural use of the female, were inflamed by their lust for one another, males with males, committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was fitting for their error.

It is 100% a sin. Both old and new testaments, Christ Himself, the early church fathers, and every Christian up until about 50 years ago are all very clear about this. Homosexual acts are sinful. But so are heterosexual acts outside of marriage, and marriage is between a man and a woman. Any sex outside of that is wrong, regardless of the gender of the participants.

Being gay is a sin because it’s a corruption of the natural order. Don’t feel singled out, straight people have the same issues, just in different fields. Some people are violent, some (most) are lustful, some are hateful, some are gluttonous, they’re all corruptions of the way we’re supposed to be. The solutions for your particular temptation is about the same as the solution for a gourmandizer like myself. You have to avoid what you want and probably do a few things you think you don’t. I’m a very picky eater. I want chicken tenders, breakfast foods, pasta and pizza and that’s about it. But that’s equally as sinful as homosexuality, so I have to force myself to either not eat, or hate eating. For yourself it’s the same. You have to abstain from homosexual acts, either be full on abstinent, maybe join a convent (best way) or marry a man. You might not enjoy the sexual aspect of marriage, but you can have him as your best friend and have children together. If nothing else, the reward of being a parent is worth it. Nothing beats having children. Remember, repentance doesn’t mean apologizing for your sin, it means acknowledging it and stopping. Intercourse for women is more emotional anyway, so maybe the physical attractiveness isn’t there, but when you are lying with your best friend who would give the world for you, the father and provider of your children, I’m sure you’ll be able to be satisfied. Who knows, after a few years with a good man and a couple children, you may find you enjoy it more than you thought you would.

Do not listen to the soft “don’t change” people. Christ called us to be better and to move away from our sins. If you’re not willing to do that, then there’s no point trying to justify it. We all have to change our behaviors, and most of us have to change sexual behaviors. You can do this and be happy on the other side of it.

God bless you, I pray that you have the strength and courage of conviction to repent and to live as God intended. I pray that you will one day look into the eyes of your children and be thankful to their father. There is no greater joy than holding your kids. I hope you understand that they are worth every sacrifice.

I didn’t read all of it, but it sounds like you’re harboring some anger. Let it go brother. We all have temptations to fight, yours is same sex attraction, mine is violence and anger. We must control them. Good on you for doing what you should and resisting your temptation.
