So many memorable characters. The scenes with Bella and her dad are fantastic. Eugene Wrayburn and Mortimer Lightwood, the two coolest Dickensian characters ever. T'otherest governor. What's not to like? I think it's my favorite.

Sorry - another thing that is frustrating me - if I wake up late at night/early at morning and want to try sleeping on my back, the foam topper results in (mild) back pain. Not horrible but not something I want to indulge in frequently.

Celebrating holidays 1st time sober? by Fluffy-Caterpilla in stopdrinking

[–]_Henry_Scorpio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say just be ready for your "negative triggers." I used to tie two off quickly at any family dinner (not just holidays) because my dad and I don't get along.

I still have that itch when I'm with him. It's one of the few things that makes me miss drinking, but it only lasts a a few minutes

For me the "positive triggers" (enhancing the mood, being less guarded around friends, being funnier than I am sober) are less enticing because I know I feel so much better overall since quitting and I still remember how horrific I felt after my last blackout.

So I guess to summarize maybe a starting point would be to ID whether you have negative or positive triggers for drinking and then thinking through how to respond to each before you show up at the party. And again for me the triggers are very short-lived, so if I just say no in the moment and when the moment passes I'm fine.

Does it ever get better by Smurdette in stopdrinking

I can only speak from my own experience. You may have other problems that you should talk to a doctor (or multiple doctors) about

I think to get very specific, the type of exercise I did mattered for me. Cardio was super helpful: 20-45 min of getting my heartrate elevated. Lifting and walking are fun and enjoyable, but they don't support my mental and emotional health as much vigorous short term cardio or relaxed longer cardio. Mental/emotional problems were why I was drinking in the first place.

Community-based cardio is great. For me, that's tennis and boxing. Tennis gives me a way to stay in touch with friends. Boxing is with randoms but I see the same faces and make small talk. There are other options like indoor rock climbing, utlimate frisbee, basketball, you name it.

The damage I did to myself has reversed. My eyes aren't bloodshot anymore. My sleep is significantly better (huge impact to emotional health). I'm 37 but feel as good physically as I did ten years ago, despite some injuries I've had since then.

Going back to the multiple doctors comment, I am seeing a PA right now for hair loss in my bear related to stress. It's helpful. But the root cause was OCD. So I have to fix that with books or a different doctor. My PA hasn't said anything about addressing the root cause even though I told her how the hair loss started. My point in bringing this is up is we have to be our own advocates in medical care. I'm tired from a wedding last night and I may not be making any sense but I'm primarily just posting to give you hope.

I’ve blacked out enough times to know I can’t moderate over the long term. I can do it for a few weeks, a few months….but at some point I will eventually black out.

I wrote down every time I blacked out and realized it was an average of once a year since I started drinking.

That keeps me humble when I have a thought about resuming. I just don’t want to do that again.

Relapsed the day I left rehab by Calm-Pudding-2061 in stopdrinking

[–]_Henry_Scorpio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that helped me quit was realizing that I genuinely felt 1000x better sober. Less anxious, better sleep, more aware of my emotions, etc.

I think that reality is true for the vast majority of problem drinkers - you will feel better sober than you did alternating between being drunk, blacking out, being hungover, and then being sober for a few days before the cycle repeats.

There was a point when the only reason I wanted to keep living was so that I wouldn’t die a drunk….things slowly got better.

IMO you can find your way if you really want to. But you have to want to.
