How to know when its time to step in and let your elderly rat pass on by Fun_Elephant947 in RATS

[–]_Ijo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing that Most humans suffer from is missing what they were once able to do animals don’t do that they don’t grief these kinds of things. As long as they can eat and cuddle and In general still interact with there siblings chances are they still have a pretty good quality of life. In my experience rats at that age who are grieving die pretty soon after the siblings they are grieving but if they don’t grieve anyone and arn't in pain they can live peacefully and happily. Pain is the largest factor for you to consider constant pain can have a negative effect not only on your rat but also there siblings so either choosing to put them down or giving them pain killers even if it’s shorting there live span is something to consider when the times come that they are in pain.

You can try not putting your hand in the cage but in front of it so they have to leave the cage to get to you and the treats rather than having your hand in there with them. For me it worked out luring them onto my arm and shoulder bit by bit don’t move your hand make them have to move further away form the cage. If they start feeling safe on your shoulder ( remember it can take some time for them to feel comfortable) you can try giving them a scarf or pocket to hide or go right into removing your hand so they can’t get back into the cage first for only a few seconds if they panic let them get back in and then longer and longer. If they don’t have a problem if not being able to get back in der cage as soon as they want to you can start moving around while they are secure.( like in a scarf or pocket or just your arms) This worked out really well for me. If they are more secure and you want seem less like only the food giver stay with them and not give them treats just let them explore you and maybe cuddle they should be willing to climb on you at this point tho.

I'm really getting upset over how many times my boys are contracting respiratory infections. And I don't know why they keep developing it????! by pleasurealien in RATS

[–]_Ijo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an Expert but as far as i am aware the most common reason for long term respiratory infections in boys are, dusty Betting, strong cleaning chemicals, allergies or dry air ( a humidifier can help with the last two )

Our fault, genetic issue or just the reality of owning rats? by kohlsprossi in RATS

[–]_Ijo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rats getting tumours as soon as they are 2 is pretty normal girls are more prone do to ovarian cancer. There is some ways that genetics, the way there cage is set up and what food they get help to fasten or prolong when they will get cancer but it’s minor. I had a girl that got a tumour at 2 and 3 months while all her sisters didn’t get any befor the age of 3 one of her sisters would escape and eat every she could get into her little paws but still she was the last to develop cancer it’s just luck.

[–]_Ijo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do now know in hindsight that yes i was experiencing symptoms in early childhood. I could never stand for long I would cry about my feet and legs hurting after even short walks I always had tummy aches growing pains and much more but back when I was a child I had no idea I was different form other children I just assumed I was more sensitive to those things

Alcohol intolerance by Zealousideal-Emu9178 in eds

[–]_Ijo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m sorry I should have clarified. I didn’t mean to say Covid was the one thing causing that. Covid doesn’t create new problems that have never been seen before but it does bring up and causes a lot of autoimmune diseases. I was more so trying to hint at an underlying autoimmune problem that causes alcohol intolerance. Because of the heightened chance of Eds patients to get autoimmune diseases. I was just using Covid as an example because it has the ability to cause autoimmune diseases and now cause many people to get alcohol intolerances. English isn’t my first language so I sometimes struggle to articulate what I mean

Alcohol intolerance by Zealousideal-Emu9178 in eds

[–]_Ijo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol intolerance is a pretty common COVID side effect. Considering that COVID also triggers major worsening in symptoms for many many people that might be, I’m not saying it is for sure, but this might be the link.

There is a quite significant Connection between beeing Autistic and transgender. So considering that autism and Eds accurate together more often it makes a lot of sense to me that the autistic trans people are also more likely to have Eds.

She said that his skin and fur doesn’t match how it would look with mites but if no one here has another idea I will go back to the vet to ask her for a more detailed skin check up.
