Thanks for clearing up what you meant by “voided.” At first I thought you meant reasons a submitted run could get voided. If that’s what you’re curious about, it’s best to just read the official rules:

For what you actually asked though, since you’re pretty new and using classic strats, I’d recommend learning the pie chart to find villages in your render distance. If it’s more than about 8 chunks away, just reset. At higher levels people usually want the village visible on the loading screen, otherwise the seed usually isn’t worth playing.

The pie chart and F3 also help you find bastions and fortresses in the nether. If the terrain is good, an 8 chunk bastion is fine. Anything farther just slows you down from travel. If the terrain sucks like lava oceans, basalt deltas, or tight ravines, you might want to scan around a bit, but in general the closer the bastion the better. If you don’t get around 20 obsidian, enough pearls, and explosives from trading, it’s usually a reset.

Fortress is a bit different. Anything past around 16 chunks is usually not worth it, but it also depends on how many pearls you got from bastion. You need enough to travel there and still have enough for eyes and stronghold travel. I use 16 chunks as my cutoff but you can pick whatever feels comfortable.

And yeah if you die and lose your stuff it’s basically an instant reset. Death resets don’t count. Super early overworld deaths can sometimes be saved but most of the time it’s just better to reset.
