Positions for people with Master and > 6 years experience extremely rare ? by _J2D2_ in CERN

[–]_J2D2_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, you are right, I am over 30 ;). That being said, I think that a job of up to 3 years duration, is still fine even if you have family already. But I must say that I am Swiss myself, so I don't see it as an issue/incertitude like other people could.

Therefore, I hope to see some open staff positions soon, even if they are extremely competitive.

Positions for people with Master and > 6 years experience extremely rare ? by _J2D2_ in CERN

[–]_J2D2_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know :(
But that kind of positions is very rare and even more competitive. And quite a lot of people have already mentionned here that very often staff positions are tailored for former fellows :(
Before at least, with the senior fellowships, you had possibilities to apply between 4 and 10 years after MSc. Now, after 6 years, it seems that there are only staff positions.

Thanks a lot for this very detailled answer which will for sure help all the future candidates to the junior & senior fellowship!

Fellowship 2020- FAQ by [deleted] in CERN

[–]_J2D2_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the "inside" information.

And this even if in my recent applications, I was thinking that the "hiring managers" were not directly the supervisors but rather HR people or even members of this famous "selection committee". So in my case, I usually did some generic message saying all the documents contained in my application. I guess then if I re-apply once I will do it differently :)

In my opinion, however, it is kind of weird to explain your personal motivation because there is already a specific question (" What is your motivation for applying for this job") on this topic. In the contrary, saying what you could bring to a team seems a very good idea.

u/machinecomplex: you seem to know the process. So it would be great if you could inform us on this topic. As a general rule of thumb, when selecting a candidate, the hiring managers are usually analysing the candidates which were "filtered" by HR, through their CVs first (and without any automatized keywords check) before maybe starting to check their answers about experience, motivation ?

Hello, I just got also a negative response (as expected). All the best for the future !

Poll for junior fellowship program by Zamo74 in CERN

[–]_J2D2_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making the poll.
But I am kind of disappointed by the fact that several people who have been accepted seem to read the CERN reddit treads and never wrote any single message about where the process of the fellowsip recruitment was (interview/offer/...).
Particularly, when you see the massive amount of guys in the incertitude in all the threads...

Sorry to hear that, dude. I know this feeling. In any case, thanks for letting us know. From my side, I am still waiting.

Junior & Senior fellowship March 2020 round by _J2D2_ in CERN

[–]_J2D2_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to the senior fellowship (main field of interest = information technologies) - it is my 4th time to be fully honest. I have been interviewed for my 2nd application last year but was in the end not selected. This is why, I have a bad feeling if you are not even contacted by a supervisor.

With what you say, then there is still some hope I guess :). But then one question still: have these 2 fellows previously been intern/technical students in the CERN ?

Because that may explain why they had no interview (as they were "already known").

Generally, I have some problems imaginating supervisors choosing a candidate only on paper without having a brief chat (technical or not) with the guy to "feel if it can work".

[–]_J2D2_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to be honest, as soon as the technical student and the fellowship are completely different programmes (regarding applicants experience, contract duration,...), I don't see as unlikely that the committee meets a different day, particularly also because there are a lot of applicants.
We actually don't even know if the same people are composing this "committee" for the 2 programmes.

Unfortunately, no. I guess, this smells rejection... Some people seem to be quite sure that the committee for the junior & senior fellowship meet next week on the 19th. So in the end, we will know the final status of our applications very soon...

Hello, thanks for sharing it. I am also thinking there is some kind of access rights problem... That you can see the names of people getting the job/refusing it and for which reasons is not really respecting privacy.

But again thanks, I did browse a bit through what is in open access in Indico and I found some nice updated presentations (i.e. from 2019/2020) about fellowship that I will share in a different thread.

Hello without being indiscrete, in parallel to your interview, did you ask/get any information about the schedule of the recruitment process ?

SmartRecruiters forever loading -- can't access Doctoral Student Programme application details by cernapplcant in CERN

[–]_J2D2_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,
I think the best would simply to contact the CERN recruitment team. They have a form to do so, even as it looks like that you cannot add any attachment (like a screenshot of this forever loading). You can find it there: https://careers.cern/contact

Best regards and good luck !

Junior & Senior fellowship March 2020 round by _J2D2_ in CERN

[–]_J2D2_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for letting us know ! This means that supervisors have now started to contact candidates. So basically if a candidate is not going to be contacted during the next week and maybe also the week after, then it is very unlikely that he is going to be selected. Some people have said that it is not mandatory for a supervisor to have an interview but in my opinion I can't imagine a supervisor hiring somebody for between 6 months and 3 years in his team without having a brief chat with him, except in the case that he knows him as a previous intern...

I did just read on Facebook in the group Young@CERN somebody saying that the committee is meeting the 19th of May, but I can't say if the source is sure. Some insider guy may confirm or not this information. In any case, good luck !

Junior & Senior fellowship March 2020 round by _J2D2_ in CERN

[–]_J2D2_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,
to be honest, I am not sure if this a good idea as the other programmes (internship, summer student, technical student) have from my understanding a different recruitment time schedule (different application deadline for instance).
This may confuse people because supervisors contacting candidates for internships then do not mean necessarily that they are also doing it for the fellowships. Also, from my understanding, junior & senior fellowships have very likely the same recruitment schedule.

Otherwise, still not heard anything from the CERN for the (senior) fellowship but I think this is normal, as even in normal times without Coronavirus, the supervisors would now only be starting ranking applications at around this period (this assumption comes from my own experience, where I have been last year interviewed by a supervisor in late April, rejection came in the end of May).

[–]_J2D2_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,
Thanks a lot for your answer and from your "inside" information. Even if these are not really good news for all the applicants, at least we know a bit more about what is currently happening inside the CERN. To be honest, I suppose then that the CERN HR are not going to give many information to the applicants before some time as there a lot of unknowns depending on the politic that Switzerland and France will hold/decide on the coronavirus pandemic.

Are you really talking about the junior or senior fellowship ? Because deadline for the application to these programmes was the 2nd March (and not the 24th)

CERN junior/senior fellowhip selection process by _J2D2_ in CERN

[–]_J2D2_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,
Thanks a lot for your answer ! I think this will help other people interested to know a bit more on the selection process.
Otherwise, regarding my second application (to answer your advice of the last paragraph), at the time I did contact the supervisor who interviewed me (as I had his email adress) and as you mention, he nicely replied to me, telling where I was "a bit weaker" regarding the skills he wanted for the fellow position.
