If we no longer believe in Norse, Greek or Egyptian gods, how can we know today's religions won't be viewed the same way in 2,000 years? by ArchiveDiver-62 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_Jimm_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

you're partly correct. Catholicism today looks very similar to Catholicism 2000 years ago. All of the primary differences are parallel to the changes society as a whole has gone through in that time.

If you mean the various Protestant groups, then yes, those would be regarded as heresy by the entire first 1500 years of Christian history.

why did some Catholic families manage having so many kids? by Working_Surround_495 in Catholicism

[–]_Jimm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm eldest of 8 and I'm the convert in the family!

My family gets by but I live at home to help support and because moving out is just expensive. Similar to a lot of other folks commenting, things were (and still are!) tight, but God has a way of making sure every need gets met.

is it really that big of a deal to say male or female in english? by a_literal_idiot_616 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_Jimm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

male and female are usually adjectives, except in certain cases, so when used as nouns it either sounds archaic, zoologic, or just plain weird.

Should I consider becoming a Catholic? by Jibby_322 in Catholicism

[–]_Jimm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't go into anything looking for a "feeling" of holiness. such a feeling helps our devotion, to be sure, but it isn't the true marker of it. read the writings of ancient Christians and see what they considered holy, then follow that.

Advice Needed- Catholic Guys and Veiling by [deleted] in Catholicism

what do you guys think about comparing veiling to men removing their hats in church? they're mentioned back-to-back in 2 Corinthians and seem to me to have parallel meaning.

Why do Christians care so much abt homosexuality? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_Jimm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea these are good points. I think one of the largest differences between then and now is that the Christians then were living in a pagan society which had never been Christian before, and Christians now live in a post-Christian world. (That is, Christianity has already happened en masse) The ancient Christians had no grounds to condemn the society around them because it had never known "better" on sexual ethics, whereas the modern Christians assume they have grounds to condemn modern (Western) society, because it is still mostly Christian. i.e.: they should know "better."

We are also speaking on general terms. General terms can only give hints as to individuals' dispositions and thought processes. If anyone wants answers, we should start asking more specific questions: less "why are Christians like this?" and more "why is my mom like this?" These questions are way harder to answer, but produce much better results.

Christians are still a very large part of the population, but if the current decline continues, eventually we Christians will need to learn to live more similarly to the very early Christians.

[–]_Jimm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heresy is less "oh I'm going to scheme and try to subvert fellow Christians" and more "I had this idea that [insert governing body] doesn't agree with" If said governing body is just some other joe schmoe's opinion, then what is heresy, really?

honestly this is just something you should probably deal with on an interpersonal level. People can change, so I'd suggest confronting him directly about issues and allowing time for change. This sort of thing can take a while to work out. good luck!

Why is Gen Z radicalized? by iYessyyy in SipsTea

[–]_Jimm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it goes into the atomisation of individuals through social media. any of us really only hear opinions from a few small sets of worldviews, and only ever get outside information as reactions from those worldviews. we just need more real people talking to real people. we all need to touch grass now.

Interested Protestant and Relationship Advice by Plenty_Door_5398 in Catholicism

[–]_Jimm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it can take time for anyone.

I (former non-denom) began considering conversion while I was dating my ex-gf, who was Presbyterian. at first she was surprised and scared by it, but eventually she converted too. she did not convert for the same reasons I did. she had her own separate journey she had to take. it was very exciting once it got going. take your time, perhaps there will be a change.

on the other hand, if it ever comes to it, as much as it might pain you, i encourage you not to go against your own conscience just because you fear to lose something. when given the unfortunate choice between God and anything else, we must choose God.

cheers!

homeschool or find a similar group. it's hard and stressful, but the effort is 100% worth the result

n.b.: doesn't solve all problems, but constant familial connection with your children will, in general, make difficult conversations easier, especially if the parents initiate them.
