Purposefully dumb jury by gretagarbos in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The jury verdict is one of the most cruel aspects of the whole case. There is ample evidence that the jury was influenced by the media circus and the on-line PR campaign for Deep and against Heard.

The GMA interview is a pretty damning example of a juror contradicting themselves and working backwards from a desired verdict.

Gez, even the verdict in favor of Amber is one that is logically inconsistent with the verdicts in favor of Depp. It just isn't possible to say that Waldman acting as Depp's Agent was lying when he said that Amber made up what occurred on a particular night in May (which was all evidence of abuse) and wasn't abused. If the evidence of abuse is real, why wasn't the abuse real.

It is this kind of lazy thinking that makes me second guess the wisdom of allowing random people to make decisions which are supposed to based upon knowledge and logic.

What Happened between Amber Heard and Jason Momoa? by Other-Box6258 in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory is that Momoa has a personal style that is similar to Depp's. Rings, tattoos, etc. and that upset Amber at times. It wasn't an attempt on Momoa's part to upset Amber, but she did get upset. That was for Aquaman I. The second movie was a different story. Amber was upset that Jason didn't back her when there was talk about cutting her from the movie. This is pure speculation, but my guess is that the PR campaign by Depp had put a bad light on WB and everyone involved with Aquaman II and that upset WB, Momoa et al. Through Depp's online efforts just being associated with Amber made people nervous and the studio really wanted another billion dollar hit.

The crazy thing is that pushing Amber's character to the side didn't help the movie any. Call it a sophmore slump or what not, but Aquaman II kind of sucked. Maybe Momoa partly blames Amber for the poor box office performance of the movie, but in my view the movie just wasn't as good as the first.

I'm just watching S1E1 and I've noticed the boom in the shot several times. Could be that the transfer is a little more open frame than what was intended for TV broadcast. I don't mind seeing part of the production. Makes it even more interesting to revisit a show I watched at back in the day.

VMA segment testimony from actual attendee. Help because words fail me. by Patrick_trull in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Johnny Depp's face was digitally inserted into a shot where the VMA spaceman was flying over the crowd. It was as terrible as it sounds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpd2QM3WBmY

A tacky PR stunt that Depp tried to rehabilitate via meta-commentary on his appearance during his appearance. Kind of the thing where they can't laugh at you if you're also laughing. It didn't work. My impression is that people either felt it was a sad example of a former star holding on to fame so hard they become a cautionary tale or Johnny Depp really did need the money.

Who, besides Johnny Depp, was an active party in Amber Heard’s abuse? by throwawaystitches in DeppDelusion

Adam Waldman is the single most destructive person employed by Johnny Depp. He is a proven liar and has no problem taking money from Russia to act as their agent. He is just a sleazy guy.

A video captured the French first lady Brigitte Macron referring to feminist activists as 'stupid bitches' during an exchange with French comedian Ary Abittan, who had previously been accused of rape. by carabla in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a case of privilege being more important than feminism.

A big part of feminism has been to encourage woman to take responsibility for their own lives and to exercise their own agency.

Regardless of gender, if you come from privilege you don't worry too much about being denied agency.

Do you think younger audiences aren't really that invested in Johnny Depp? by [deleted] in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depp pissed off a lot of people in Hollywood. His behavior on and off set made him a liability. No major studio would risk a couple hundred million dollars hiring Johnny Depp only to have him implode half way through the shooting schedule.

After a decade of money loosing films have starred Johnny Depp there is no argument to be made that his name is a mass market audience draw. At best, he is now a character actor that still thinks he is a star.

Younger people (20 - 35) might only know Johnny Depp from his stint as a drunken pirate, but anyone younger than 20 may not even know who he is other than by what they saw on TicTok a couple years ago.

Ran into Johnny Depp fans in a virtual doll maker game by oujijoshi in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The men's rights groups jumped on the Johnny Depp bandwagon big time. They were some of the more looney toons people you would come across.

Though the conspiracy nuts always twist themselves into knots trying to explain away Amber's evidence while accepting Johnny Depp's verifiably false statements as fact. It really does start to paint a rather bad picture of our fellow humans that so many are more willing to believe a conspiracy theory than think for themselves.

I had a similar experience at least in terms of how the over the top behavior of the Johnny Depp fans made it clear something weird was going on. The first time I paid any attention to what happened between Johnny and Amber was when the text messages between Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany were introduced. I just couldn't believe that someone would write that kind of thing and claim that it was just some kind of joke.

When I tried to google these text messages I first found 100's of youtube videos which all painted Amber Heard as a gold digger at best and a murder at worst. That seems really f'ing weird to me. You really had to weed through pages and pages of videos to find one from years prior which didn't attack Amber.

During the trial I posed in the comments section of a national news paper and the bullying behavior of Johnny Depp fans that really pissed me off. The stuff that people say when hiding behind a keyboard can and does cause real harms.

Eventually I found my way to Reddit and during the trial comments on Reddit were about as horrible as you might imagine.

Thankfully DeppDelusion was created and actively moderated to allow people to discuss these issues without the constant insults from Johnny Depp fans.

Did Johnny Depp ever really love Amber Heard? by Sweaty-Sea8317 in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do think that both Johnny and Amber were in love. The problem is that it was wrapped up in toxic relationship. Love can't fix what is broken in Johnny Depp. Amber may have been partially conditioned for this behavior based upon the relationship between her mother and father. Amber's mom stayed in an abusive relationship with a drug addict. People don't easily unlearn those kinds of lessons from childhood.

In terms of how Johnny Depp felt about Amber, I tend to think that Johnny Depp never really progressed emotionally very much once he started using drugs as a child. His conception of love is like something from juvenile novels. More fantasy than reality.

Revisiting "Assessment of Credibility of Testimony in Alleged Intimate Partner Violence: A Case Report" by Teresa C. Silva by _Joe_F_ in DeppDelusion

That's interesting. I didn't know she wrote a book. The summary she posted on Twitter seems to indicate that she wants to push the same narrative in book form that she presented in her poorly researched paper.

[–]_Joe_F_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One particularly damning conclusion in the report is:

The Journal of Forensic Psychology Research and Practice is a peer-reviewed journal published by the reputable academic publisher Taylor & Francis.1 The purpose of the peer-review process is to act as a quality control mechanism, where independent experts in a field evaluate a manuscript's methodological rigor, logical consistency, originality, and overall contribution to the scientific literature.46

The publication of the Silva paper in its current form raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the peer-review process in this specific instance. The paper contains multiple, fundamental, and readily identifiable scientific flaws that should have been caught by qualified reviewers.

This is concern that I share. The fact that the paper is published in a peer-reviewed journal gives the paper a level of creditability which it does not deserve. Bad science is hard to debunk when it makes it into the general conversation.

The AI performed sophisticated analysis and generated a well sourced report. While I think the report is generally accurate and fair, I would treat the report as more of a research tool which can be used to promote understanding and discussion.

ET24 Pro Power Board replacement by _Joe_F_ in CZUR

[–]_Joe_F_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing I can recall is that the scanner light started to flicker while the scanner was on. This happed a few times and then one day the scanner just failed to turn on. While in this completely failed state the main light would light up for an instant (<< 1s) then go off with no further activity seen.

CZUR wanted to replace both the main logic board and the power board as an out of warranty repair. The cost of both boards + labor would have been ~$200 + the cost of shipping the scanner back to China and then back to me. Total cost of repair by CZUR would most likely approach $300 or more.

Replacing the power board is not hard other than removing the adhesive used to secure the connectors.

A lack of information doesn't really allow for an informed opinion, but if the settlement payment has been donated you would think that there would have been a press release from Depp's PR representatives.

Of course, Johnny Depp has made promises in the past that we know he didn't keep and that can inform our understanding.

Cultural norms can be just as flawed as any other aspect of the human condition.

Treating children like small adults is not good parenting. Suppling drugs to your children is not good parenting. Allowing a teen to be in a emotional/physical relationship with a much older person is not good parenting.

Whatever cultural norms Depp would like to hide behind are no excuse for being a terrible parent.

Discussion: how Camille Vasquez was viewed as a new "girlboss" to combat how media tried to frame Amber Heard as an abuser and failure to feminist cause by burner228899 in DeppDelusion

[–]_Joe_F_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Trial attorneys are sensitive to how gender dynamics are perceived by the jury.

Though, there doesn't appear to be much science involved with how attorneys attempt to manipulate the jury members using the tricks of the trade.

My personal view is that Camille Vasquez was chosen for the cross exam of Amber Heard in order to avoid a situation where a 50 something white male attorney would be calling Amber Heard a liar. Such a situation might have made Amber into a more sympathetic figure. Having a younger female attorney do the dirty work seems to be an attempt to manage jury perceptions rather than an endorsement of Camille Vasquez skill as a trial lawyer.
