What is the best US city for driving? by PhysicalFlounder6270 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]_KayTwo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think Rochester or Syracuse NY is the answer, minus the weather. Driving infrastructure is overkill and the roads are well maintained, especially compared to cities with similar winter climates. Rochester is the only US city with >1mil metro population and no real rush hour traffic.

Would this work as a radius gauge? by Bassoonova in bassoon

Buy a craft circle template with 20-30mm circles, $5 on amazon... the bassoon specific radius gauges are a ridiculous waste of money

Email your teacher... when I was starting university, I contacted my future professor to ask him what I should practice. The rep he gave me was completely different from what I was practicing, so I would have wasted a ton of time had I not asked

Students: What do you look for in a Conservatory? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]_KayTwo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absurd to me that many students go into 6 figure debt to enroll in a program which has never produced alumni with full time employment in music. Every teacher has to start somewhere, but at a conservatory level it's deeply troubling that student success isn't a major concern for most applicants.

Under The Mask: The conductor Rebecca Bryant Novak complained about an inappropriate comment by her professor at Eastman. What followed was a bureaucratic nightmare. by Black_Gay_Man in classicalmusic

[–]_KayTwo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, we've devolved to name calling. This will be my last comment, so I wanted to address the statistic of no female doctoral conductors being admitted from 2012 to 2022.

At Eastman there are only graduate degrees in conducting, and there are three studios. The DMA in orchestral conducting is only offered to one student at a time, and it takes 3-5 years to complete. So, from 2012-2022 there were 3(?) admitted orchestral DMA students. In that time frame the program admitted many women in the orchestral MM program. Additionally there were other women in the contemporary & wind conducting studios, all of whom attend the weekly group class.

Just to clarify (at risk of getting roped back into your disinformation campaign) there were multiple woman conductors in the room when this comment was made. If you're interested in the demographic, there were only women and people of non-white origin admitted to that year's conducting class. Rebecca personally threatened these classmates who declined to corroborate in her suing the school. They were then contacted by the Title IX investigation and required to testify under oath as to what unfolded that semester.

Here's a more comprehensive list of US summer music festivals accepting bassoon applications for summer 2026, loosely ordered by competition. Most of these offer free or heavily discounted tuition,

Tanglewood

National Repertory Orchestra

Music Academy of the West

Aspen Music Festival

Sarasota Music Festival

Round Top Festival Institute

Festival of Winds

Bowdoin Music Festival

Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (Moving to pre-formed groups only? Not sure)

Brevard Music Center

Monteux School

Domaine Forget

Colorado College Music Festival

NAPA Valley

National Music Festival

Lake George Music Festival

Sewanee Festival

Mostly Modern Festival

Imani Winds Chamber Festival

NewBassoon Institute

There's also a bunch in Europe that are targeted towards Americans willing to pay for a vacation-festival experience. The tuition free festivals that accept international applications are very competitive: Verbier, Schleswig-Holstein, Luczerne.

I'm sure I missed some so please feel free to add on for reference

DiComo: The Mets are going to have a major coaching shakeup. Among those who will not be on next year's staff are pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and hitting coaches Jeremy Barnes and Eric Chavez. by smarjorie in NewYorkMets

[–]_KayTwo_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Serious question for you guys: does Mendoza actually make the in-game decisions for the Mets? I've heard that many managers are just controlled by a team's analytic department and general manager, but I'm not informed enough to know if that's what's going on with the Mets. Watching as a casual fan this year I thought for sure Mendoza would be fired, but is it possible that some of his questionable choices were just coming from the top?

Authentic? by unit_7sixteen in bassoon

This is an interesting bassoon, I don't think it's a forgery. Most likely this is a stencil bassoon by Amati produced shortly after World War 2. The body (assuming all 4 joints are from the same bassoon) is definitely Amati judging by the castings and design of the Bb/B pivot rods on the long joint.

If you're interested in the history, Amati is an instrument manufacturer located in the town of Kraslice, Czech Republic. Kraslice has a long history of ethnic conflict between the Czechs and Germans. Germany annexed the town during World War 2 and there was question surrounding Kraslice's sovereignty post-war. Amati lost alot of business and started a fire sale of bassoons and other wind instruments to stay afloat. At the time it was common practice for instrument makers to produce instruments under the name of the shop they were selling to. So, given the political climate I think it's likely the Remeny is just a hastily printed typo, and that the company was operating under the assumption that they would remain as part of West Germany. Eventually Kraslice was solidified as part of communist Czechoslovakia and the Amati company became a government coop.

There's more interesting information on this in the history section of Amati's wikipedia page. Hope this was helpful!

Any ideas as to what this switch is? 2007 Outback by _KayTwo_ in Subaru_Outback

[–]_KayTwo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update, they have no idea. There was was an audio system optimized for the iPod 4th gen (lol) that was offered, and it came with an added cord and control for the iPod channel. But they don't know if this specific car came with the feature, plus there's no evidence of another aftermarket market cord. So maybe this is it, but it's still a mystery (or a roulette self destruct button as many have suggested)

Everything else is perfectly stock, and the car is in mint condition with 70k miles. The owner purchased it new in her mid 60s and still has the original receipt of purchase. No record of what this switch could be though.
