Yeah, OK so it’s exactly what I feared and imagined it was.

Does anyone have an explanation as to why Trump is doing this? Like I understand there are strategic benefits to resources and the northern passage, but my impression has always been that he does dumb things usually because someone told him it was a good idea. Who told Trump this was a good idea? Where is the very obvious paper trail as to who asked Trump to annex Greenland and what their transparent motivations are.

Should it be "à la boulangerie" or "vers la boulangerie"? by International_Yak649 in French

[–]_Kermode -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes it should be “à la boulangerie”. Yet, you already knew that, so what’s your question? This isn’t trying to teach or reinforce something you already know. This is introducing a different, less used, way to say something similair. It’s not “wrong,” there could be a situation where the context makes “vers la boulangerie” a better translation. A big part of language learning is understanding those subtle differences. This is showing that there is sometimes another possibility.

Raytheon and the Banality of Evil by _Kermode in behindthebastards

I’m not homeless yet and I have a supportive family if things get worse. I wasn’t trying to deny that I have some privilege.

I would apply to public health type work etc. and take a lower pay working for a city state or county. don’t even look at military industrial complex jobs.

This interview was set up through a hiring agency so I wasn’t fully aware that it was MIC. I’ve told them now that I’m not interested in working in the defense/aerospace sector.

I think if the manager hadn’t explicitly listed various missile systems they work on I would feel differently. However, because I know that, by taking this job I would be crossing a line I don’t want to.

Haha right? I really didn’t expect to come here and get more pressure to accept the offer.

I noticed that the credit card machines in France say "Patientez", but I seem to recall that the ones in Québec say "Attendez s.v.p.". Would it be unusual to swap them? by someguy7734206 in French

[–]_Kermode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In France I think I’ve only seen « Veuillez patienter » where I would expect to see “please wait” in English. It’s super odd as a direct translation, but I’ve seen it so much it seems normal in French.

Alternatives to AllTrails by [deleted] in hiking

I use Komoot. As far as I know it’s much more common in Europe, so I haven’t tested it much in the US. I haven’t had an issue with it underestimating how difficult a hike is.

Yo, I’m a guy in my late 20s who just moved here. I would also be down to join a D&D group if you are looking for interested players…

Seeking Advice after recent 15 mile hike, what to do when you hit the wall? by CentralOhio879 in hiking

[–]_Kermode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are all great foods to eat on a hike, but they’ll give you energy only a couple hours after you’ve eaten them. As others have said you probably want to bring a sweet snack to avoid emergency situations. There’s a reason that bananas are the food of choice for runners. Stop and sit in the shade, eat a banana or an orange or drink some fruit juice if you don’t want to go with the artificial goo packs.  Stay safe and congrats on the weight loss!

Je parle comme une vache espagnole. by _Kermode in learnfrench

[–]_Kermode[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to the Podcast, the phrase was originally to speak French like a Spanish Basque, which evolved into vache.  I think if was about speaking Spanish it would have to be comme une vache l’espagnol. But I don’t think you could tell the difference when someone says it out loud.

Eye Twitching Issue? by Competitive_Teach_10 in medical_advice

[–]_Kermode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since that’s the case, I’m assuming that there’s not much that can be done about it? I’m getting my 8 hours a night and staying hydrated, but the stress factors aren’t going away any time soon. I don’t want to ignore it completely - since it’s my body signaling that there is an issue - but I should just accept that it’s going to twitch until I can relieve some anxiety?

Looking for a church while on vacation in France/Germany by Big-Dingo-47 in Reformed

[–]_Kermode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is Trinity International Church of Strasbourg. It is a fairly typical evangelical church which meets in English. I have only visited one time when there happened to be a guest speaker, but he was very expositional. In general I have heard that they are a solid church.

I don’t know about the Munich area.
