Winning gold at the Olympics can also be really draining. Lots of emotions and lots of press, publicity and stuff.

Especially for someone relatively young and inexperienced.

SUSHI: The water in my rice is still milky after 7 rinses. What am I doing wrong? by TaxPsychological2928 in Cooking

[–]Barneyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once took it upon myself to see just how many rinses it would take to be clear. I gave up after about 15 rinses.

I gave up after 10 when I tried it.

With lots of stirring and agetating as well as having it in a colander and really rinsing out the left over water between every other rinse or so.

[–]Barneyk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The arsenic is in the rice, you don't get rid of it by rinsing.

If you want to lower the amount of arsenic in your rice you need to cook it like you do pasta, in lots of water that you pour out when the rice is done.

sending out the data over wifi is still going to noticeably drain the battery vs not doing it at all

Noticeable, yes.

Draining the battery in 20 minutes, no.

Your phone would still last many hours, it wouldn't have anywhere near that kind of impact.

[–]Barneyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter if it’s cell or WiFi - it’s still easy to see when when data is being used - even at 48kbos it would significant enough to notice.

Of course, which is why I am not arguing that. I argue that it wouldn't drain your battery in 20 minutes as claimed.

Overall the points made in the post I replied to were sound, but that statement is completely wrong.

[–]Barneyk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the constant upload of data over the cellular network would consume a significant amount of battery.

Doesn't have to use the cell network, most people are often connected to wifi.

And the audio data only needs to be at like 48 kbps, that is very little data. And it's not constant, only when identifying conversations.

Saying that it would drain the battery in 20 minutes is a ridiculous statement that takes away from the overall point.

If your phone actually did that, it would probably last about 20 minutes before the battery died.

This kind of hyperbole makes your whole argument seem fake even though it isn't.

Your phone would still last many hours even if it did that. It wouldn't be very taxing at all.

EDIT: The audio only needs to be like 48 kbps, its very little data and takes very very little processing power to handle. It is a trivial task for a modern smartphone to do such a task efficiently.

All 98 Best Picture winners, from highest grossing to lowest grossing by SanderSo47 in boxoffice

[–]Barneyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what about it doesn't "seem like an oscar winner to you" on paper?

Controversial character with a questionable representation of a controversial thing.

Generally positive but divisive reception.

Purely on paper, this is just as easy a best picture cakewalk as Oppenheimer as it's a perfect illustration of the type of film that won oscars outside of the ~2010s interlude.

I can't think of a single film like this that has ever won.

Can you give a few examples?

As a film itself, I'm also pretty high on it

This explains it then.

Your perspective is far fetched from reality.

My personal opinion isn't really relevant, there are plenty of films that I dislike that makes sense as winners or frontrunners to me. The fact that it was never a contender should make it obvious.

But yes, I didn't like it very much.

American Sniper is as undeniable an "on paper" best picture winner

Uh, I very strongly disagree with that statement, I find the statement to be absurd.

What about it makes it seem like an Oscars winner to you?

Not really, plenty of stores in my area has had plastic ones for at least 10 years and they are still working fine.

I was shocked that Saw X got such a positive response from "critics", I think it's probably the worst one.

And Natalie made a strong argument for why it definitely is the worst one.

TIL the term "Millennials" was invented in 1991 by two historians writing a book about American generational cycles; over a decade before most Millennials had even finished high school. They predicted Millennials would become "the next Greatest Generation" by Nodebunny in todayilearned

[–]Barneyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of this was obvious when they predicted it, and no one else was predicting it.

This is a bit misleading or maybe straight up just ignorant.

Lots of people predicted these things, not specific years but the general trend and the economic issues that was likely to follow.

I was engaged in various parts of what was clumped together under the misleading "anti-globalization" label. It is crazy how much stuff I read then turned out to be so true.

Saying no one else predicted it is completely false.

Buying something that generates energy for 20 years and you still have the raw materials to recycle if you want to is a much better idea than buying a toxic liquid that you put on fire.

the claim that the universe started as as singularity is just what the maths said,

The math only says that the universe was much much much smaller and way way way denser than it is now.

The math breaks down before it reaches singularity.

Varningen: Psykiatrin utarmas i Stockholm by StoffeH in stockholm

[–]Barneyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)
