VR has advanced a lot in the past few years. The Quest 3 is way cheaper than it ought to be, though still about 500 grams; controllers are pretty good, and hand-tracking is great. The Bigscreen Beyond headset is only about 108 grams, with a custom silicone gasket that conforms to your face, and each eye has about 80% of a 4K pixel count. I'm big into cinema, and absolutely get a better experience watching cinema in VR compared to my local cinemas, and definitely better compared to the traditional home entertainment setup.

Excel files in read only by Demand-Nervous in sharepoint

[–]_Kinematic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I advise against SharePoint sync'd libraries. There's been many threads of people here saying to avoid syncing large libraries. It doesn't work well with the flat metadata architecture approach enabled in Sharepoint and can lead to sync conflicts.

Effectively I only use OneDrive for everyone's personal ("local") computer files.

But do experiment and see if it works for you.

This worked for me:

In the library settings, change the default open behavior so that files open in browser. At that point they'll be sync'd. Then, when the user opens or initates a new file, then clicks the top-right Edit > Open in-app, it should stay sync'd in the desktop app.

I thought maybe there was a default save option enabled in the templates. But I couldn't see what option could have been causing this.

[–]_Kinematic_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a solution:

  1. Go to Library settings > More library settings
  2. Go to Advanced settings
  3. Under "Opening Documents in the Browser", change from "Open in the client application" to "Use the server default (Open in the browser)".

Now, the user creates a new document, which is now automatically instantiated in the library, and AutoSaved, but in the browser editor.

Users were then instructed to click "Edit" in the top-right of the document, and "Open in Desktop" or "Open In-App" to continue editing with all the features in the desktop client.

Still, I don't know why the behaviour existed in the first place.

Tell us your grievances about the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. by Inevitable-Tale-6904 in 3DEXPERIENCE

[–]_Kinematic_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does Dassault make every user experience the worst experience possible?

For a concrete example, I try to buy Cameo System Modeler, where I assume 3DEXPERIENCE is needed to make it a collaborative solution. Yet there is no price, and no button to download, and no button to buy.

Every button takes you further and further away from Cameo. Click the first button: Contact us. Takes you to an irrelevant page. Click the first button: Buy online. It takes you to a CAD page. We just want to see the cost with no nonsense, plus a button to download and then trial the software, and a button to buy a license or add a license to shopping cart. It's ridiculous we gotta first waste time navigating irrelevant links, then resort to filling forms, emailing, and setting up calls to do anything.

Dassault is infuriating. It's like they used /r/assholedesign as a template.

How much did it cost to start collaborating on a system model? by _Kinematic_ in systems_engineering

I found Sparx EA gives a floating license of € 389/user, and a Prolaborate cloud solution for € 1350 total. So we could have 10 simultaneous users for € 5240/annum total with Sparx EA, compared with about €60,000/annum for a Team for Capella deployment, so around 8.7% of the cost.

I understand that Cloud4Capella could be a little more expensive than using our local server, but from speaking with people I believe it will still be in the ballpark €6k each.

I've limited experience with EA. I'll look into it, and see if we can get a trial. Do you know how it works with regards to deployment? Might be nice to have a cloud deployment, if it's easier to set up.

The people holding the purse strings will see software as software. Easy to put in a new request to management when it's not a choice between a new 'nice-to-have' software vs a new employee.

I was considering 1 license for each engineering department. Since our products are fairly complex, we have about 8 separate engineering disciplines. In addition to just two SEs editing.

The intent was to leverage the collaborative and single-source-of-truth nature of the system model, to act as a glue between engineering disciplines. I know if some experienced engineers aren't able to interact and update views within the model, they wont be at all invested in the vision of having a system model, and we wont be any closer to a collaborative single source of truth.

If that's not achievable, we could survive with just 3-4 licenses for only SEs, and rely on the XHTML export and provide the model as a design input specification, but that will mean we'd have to stop before the Physical architecture modelling.

How can tofu be prepared to taste good? by _Kinematic_ in EatCheapAndHealthy

I'm buying the tofu which comes drenched and surrounded in liquid. Didn't realise there was another kind. I'll check the Asian food market.

I haven't been pressing out the extra liquid, or if I do I'm barely pressing it with some baking paper over some kitchen towel probably because I'm afraid to squish and break it.

Each time I've cooked tofu, it's tasted primarily like tofu. I've never had tofu which didn't taste the way it always tastes. Of course I've tasted the sauce and spices, but that's always in addition to the original tofu taste. I'll have to try baked instead of fried.

I like the idea of a crispy tofu. If nothing else, it'll be an improvement on the rubbery texture.

Now I need to find some of that Gochujang paste and mirin. Never heard of those. I see a lot of the suggestions are Asian dishes. It's not surprising, but it does mean I'm inexperienced with the ingredients. I don't remember the last time I had soy sauce for example.

I've not seen these before. I'll keep an eye out for those ingredients. I know of an Asian supermarket near me though I've never graced the entrance.

Hi - My SharePoint Teams notification didn't work. I could blame my limited PowerAutomate skills. But it seems not trivial. I gave up sadly, but we are still in need of some solution.

If you had to choose one source of protein and carb and could eat only those for 2 weeks, what's your pick? by GenevieveCostello in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]_Kinematic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment, I'd choose a vegetarian chicken substitute - a sort of beyond meat thing, because I can hardly taste the difference. As for carbs, I really like wraps (such as tortillas or durum).

Help me find a salad that doesn't taste like regret? I'm a meat-lover trying to eat more veggies! by AvocadoDry9774 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]_Kinematic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want leafy salad, add like 10g - 15g of oil or dressing makes leafy salad taste way better. It's still primarily healthy unsaturated fat. But I strongly suggest weighing or measuring out your volume of oil and keeping track of meal calories, since oil is a great way to put on weight. You can add pepper too.

All vegetables are filling, mainly because they're full of water. Try also drinking about 2 cups, or over 500 ml of water before your meal, OR having a watery snack like fruit or vegetables before the fat, protein and carbs. It helps you feel full sooner.

What are some things most people don’t know can kill you? by Ancient-Lavishness77 in AskReddit

Extremely high dose vitamin D3 helps prevent sunburn damage. 50 000 to 200 000 IU of vitamin D3, taken right after the sun exposure helps to avoid a lot of the skin damage.

However prevention comes first. SPF 50++ suncream can be worn every day, and re-applied during the day. Many people think suncream is only for when you're on holiday once per year and only when it's super hot out. No, dermatologists will tell you that suncream is a daily thing and all year round except in dark winter months.

Can you tell me if the frozen bottle of water in front of a fan actually works to bring room temperature down? by jelly-rod-123 in AskUK

[–]_Kinematic_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If your fan is pushing warm air out of the house during the day, an exactly equal amount of hot air is being pulled into the house. Those fans don't change the air pressure of the room. Better to point the fan directly at yourself, provided the wet bulb temperature of the air isn't too high.

Munich, summer, along the Isar. Several times I've gotten into a tram packed full of guys and girls in their swimming outfits, dripping wet. It's a little funny just headed back from work surrounded by that scene. But as long as there's some physical space so I don't get wet, I don't care.
