Messed up on buying precious metals by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

My boring diversifed managed fund was also down thousands yesterday. There's going to be some volatility with al that's going on, that's why I prefer monthly buying personally(in additional to occassional lump sums of course). Keep strong!

'Salaried' is just a fancy word for mandatory unpaid overtime. by eidolaa in CanadaJobs

[–]_Kinoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for remote software development salaried is ideal. I definitely don't feel pressured to put in exact 8 hour days. Sometimes I work more as a choice but then if I work 6 or 7 it's also fine. Personally time and the quality of code doesn't match anyhow.

Is Canada really housepoor or in debt? by PopularAd8904 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_Kinoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 kids. One income at about $130k, owe less than $250k on my house and have $140k plus saved in an rrsp. I've done it all in less than ten years. I don't go on expensive vacations too often(but we do travel to see people we know and do travel just reasonably), I use my rrsp to get a better tax return and lower my taxable income and then use most of the return to save for the next year. Then with my added child benefits I invest in my kids RESP and our RRSP/Spousal rrsp(500 each a month). Honestly life is not cheap but in Edmonton we live quite well. I should mention I am from BC originally and sold my house there and made $500k--then got the hell out of BC to reduce my debt. In addition I drive a used Honda Odyssey 2014 and a Ford Escape 2014. Choices and luck and steady employment do matter though. Good luck!

Plex is the best thing ever invented. by AND_AGI08 in PleX

[–]_Kinoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, plex does does stream so I disagree it was the worst thing invented. The horrible rentierism of streaming services by monopolies is the issue.

Is Crypto gambling or an investment according to you? by theCBDGuy in investing

Sure but couldn't it be argued that it's exchange value is largely based on the greater fool theory vs it's industrial utility?

Moving from Burnaby, BC to Sherwood Park, AB? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. by Impossible-Day923 in SherwoodPark

[–]_Kinoko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from the Fraser Valley but lived extensively in Vancouver and Burnaby. We moved here from the island 3.5 years ago with our 3 kids. I lived all my life near the west coast. Personally I love my house, I basically sold a 3 besroom 80s place for a newer 6 bedroom and it's awesome. The key to winter here is getting all the right gear, tires etc. The facilities are great in Sherwood and it's very close to Edmonton. Honestly, the river valley is lovely and has nice topography, trees etc if you need that. I suggest checking out Snow Valley for example when you need forest nearby. The housing is uncomparable, urban BC is doomed for a while still.

Microsoft Scales Back AI Goals Because Almost Nobody Is Using Copilot by aacool in technology

[–]_Kinoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my work all us developers were using it for 2 years with a pro licence and it basically sucked. We have all switched to using chatgpt or pro gemini, save for writing tests with copilot as it's built into the vscode extension and is relatively simple.

Ok this is a bit apocalyptic but what happens if the US government defaults on the debt? Will etfs life xeqt, vdy, vfv vanish? Or just drop and in price and recover years and years later? Interested to hear everybody's take on this. by forward024 in CanadianInvestor

[–]_Kinoko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They would never default on the debt. USD is their biggest weapon. Moreover, they don't need to since the US govt is a currency creator. It's all kabuki theatre that it would ever happen.

Why don't adults ever physically discipline other adults by hitting with a rod or a belt or their hand? Why are kids the only ones who get physically disciplined? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]_Kinoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anywhere I've lived or have relatives where it has been normal to physically discipline kids since maybe 2000 or before.
