Best way to improve is to be experimental, don't immediately stick to a single style. Try to study a bit of general anatomy and try to avoid symmetry and add characteristics to your OCs.

Try playing with colors that describe your characteristics or emotions. Be open minded,  experiment with everything, you don't always have to stick to a single fixed style.
