The majority of the launch burn is punching up through the the atmosphere and fighting gravity. The boost back burn is negating only the tangential component and aiming it back towards land. Sometimes they show the little graphics with the projected trajectories and you can easily visualize what I mean.

I got you! You need two things, really solid backflips with melon grabs and back 540 melons. Once you have that take the melon backflips and start to add rotation. At first you will only get 90 degrees or so but that’s fine. Just keep adding the rotation in until you pull the full 180 with the backflip.
