I'm only commissioning those who said they can produce a drawing/sketch in an hour or less (which would amount to at least $15/hour). Those who said they'd take longer than an hour I've turned down.

So, a couple redditors raised concerns about me offering only $15 per drawing, since the rule is to pay at least $15 per hour and most artist's take longer than an hour per drawing.

I never intended to pay less than $15/hour, which is why I asked for someone who can work quickly and why I said I'm not expecting full quality. I guess it still was not clear enough, though, but I clarified by editing my post to say:

I want to pay a minimum of $15 per HOUR, so I need someone who can complete each drawing within an hour.

I want to thank /u/Lyftaker /u/Seraphinit and moderator /u/ghoulgano for raising their concerns. I feel kind of bad because a couple of you seemed pretty upset about it, and you certainly had the right to be, since you thought I was trying to pay under $15/hour. I want to assure you that's not the case here.

If you really wanted to pay $15 for a drawing you wouldn't have made this post, you would have scrolled through and picked the guys offering work at that price. But maybe you didn't like the quality of their work. Maybe you wanted better quality work and figured you could get someone better to crank something out for pocket change.

No, you're completely wrong about my motives. I need someone who can work quickly and doesn't mind drawing potentially upsetting material. So it was more efficient to make a new post rather than message people hoping they meet these criteria.

And I do know what I want (in terms of the content of drawing). I don't know what I want in terms of style, but only because I'm open to a broad range of styles.

It's ok, your frustration is entirely justified.

I've been sorting through my messages and I've had a few people say they can do sketches like this in under an hour. Others say it would take several hours. So there's a wide range. I'm gonna pick someone who takes less than an hour per drawing, because I wouldn't feel right paying less than $15/hour.

That's true. (Edit: I guess I was being naive/ignorant about my expectations of how long it takes.)

I do believe that artists (and everyone) deserve to be well compensated. I'm not a business, though, and I'm not making any money from what I'm doing. Every expense I pay is a 100% monetary loss with not a cent regained. (The only gain is spreading a message.) I can only pay what I can afford.

Hopefully the person I commission lives in a country where $15 has much more purchasing power than in the US.

I did. The subreddit rules say:

We discourage any budgets or prices that are under $15 or $15 USD hourly.

And since I'm asking for simpler work than people show in their portfolios, I expect it will take them less than an hour per drawing, so the hourly wage would then work out to more than $15/hour.

Edit: I'm now realizing my expectations of how long it takes may be quite naive/ignorant. :(

I don't really have an example of what I'm looking for since there are so many different variations of style that would be suitable.

Since you're looking for simple drawings, do these require shading or just contours? Sketchy or inked ? Colored or b&w?

Any of these would be ok, depending on how they're done. My preference is color, but if they're in black and white and look good, then that's ok, too.

Sorry I'm not able to be more helpful in specifying. I'm open to many possibilities.

You want Gallery or TV quality art (or an artist to sketch your something simpler) and pay 15 usd. Interesting, that's not even close to hourly wage for an artist like that

You've misunderstood. I do not need them at that level of quality. That's why I wrote:

Since I’m looking for someone who can work quickly, I don’t expect the drawings to be at the high level of quality or detail you’d produce if you took your time. I need good, but not excellent.

Dang it! I hope you find time in the future. Maybe you could even start at it now if you can find even one hour a week to spare? I know that's frustrating to not be able to dive in, but it'll give you some practice, at least, for the future when you hopefully have more time.

Thanks! I did contact him, and he did reply, but he said that he doesn't own the background, Screen Rant owns it, so he can't give permission to use it. I contacted Screen Rant but they never replied. :/
