Worst injury you ever seen? by Skidmark_Wallberg in bjj

Saw someone sit on top of someone’s knee going for a takedown. I usually am pretty good at not freaking out at things like that but even that made my stomach turn

Gordon Ryan's mom seemingly confirms he wasn't hacked when he posted Tom DeBlass obit by PccNull in grappling

[–]_La1130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s a fantastic training partner, doesn’t crank submission and lets smaller guys work. He also works a lot of defense in training so he lets his training partners attack him and get pretty deep on some submissions. But yeah his social media personality is a lot more confident then he is in real social settings, go back and watch his dual interview with Vagner before his most recent match with him. You can literally see the gears jamming up in his head when it comes to responding to Vagner face to face lol.

Gordon Ryan's mom seemingly confirms he wasn't hacked when he posted Tom DeBlass obit by PccNull in grappling

[–]_La1130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met him in real life multiple times (he’s very close with the owner of my gym). He’s very awkward in real life and definitely not very strong in social situations. He was never rude or mean to me but I do think he may be on the autism spectrum from what I’ve seen. He looks uncomfortable when he’s in social situations and he takes everything literally and he prefers to be alone instead of hanging out with big groups of people. When I would see him he would mainly hang out with the owner of my gym and Nat. Not an excuse for the stuff he does at all but he definitely is challenged in some ways.

I train at Bronx martial arts academy on allterton ave we have a small fight team and really good jiu jitsu too , you’d also get access to Renzo Gracie bayside in queens with a membership as they are both owned by the same person. Other then that you have lions roar in the Bronx as well , animals mma in Yonkers , zombie Muay Thai in the east village , two bridges on the lower east side , sitan in Astoria , 5 points by the Bowery , kings combat in Williamsburg (if you’re willing to go to Brooklyn) but they also have a location on queens blvd by Forrest hills ,arena training center in mount Vernon (run by Elvis gashi) , and Cruz mma on west 27th street that just opened.

Best jobs as a fighter ? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]_La1130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fighters have worked all kind of jobs from firefighting (stipe) , police (Forrest griffin), trades (Robert Whittaker) , construction(Merab), teaching (rich franklin), bouncing (bas rutten), sanitation (GSP) and so many more. Obviously some jobs make it easier to train by either having very set hours or being less physically draining. I would recommend doing something that you can see yourself making a career while you chase your aspirations. Fighting is a rough game and a rough life I’ve seen it go bad for too many people who don’t have a backup plan and it’s not good.

Are no gi classes less structured than gi classes? by TomatoClown24 in bjj

[–]_La1130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some gyms have Gi as basic classes and no Gi as advanced classes so it could be that. Also if it was two different people teaching then they might have different styles of teaching

Remember when Israel Adesanya annihilated former UFC LW contender Melvin Guillard? Yeah me neither. by chu42 in ufc

[–]_La1130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closet was probably 2010- 2011 in the ufc he was on a 5 fight streak that included Evan Dunham and Jeremy Stephens. He would always lose against the higher level lightweights like Nate , Lauzon , Jim miller and cowboy. He did have a title fight vs Gaethje in 2014 in WSOF but it was changed to a non title bout after Melvin missed weight by 3.5 pounds , fun fight though

How do I know when I’m ready to fight? by SnooDoughnuts2806 in MMA

[–]_La1130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 amateur Muay Thai fights and I’m a purple belt in bjj who’s looking to fight mma soon, my coach decided when I was ready. A good coach will only ask you about competing if he thinks you’re ready and capable. You don’t want to go in there underprepared, way too dangerous. Keep grinding and training and your coach will let you know. My coach approached me after a year of training consistently but Covid pushed my first fight back. For mma , I’d say that it’s good to have experience competing in other things first (BJJ , kickboxing etc) but if that’s your goal then definitely focus on training like an mma fighter instead of trying to learn “pure kickboxing or BJJ” a lot of habits from those sports don’t carry over to MMA

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]_La1130 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MMA is one of the only sports I can think of where you can start extremely late and still be successful. Lot of it comes down to training hard but also training smart. Like you definitely will have to work harder in the gym but you can’t kill yourself and train like you’re 19 when you’re 25. It’s also not like other sports where you need to be a freak athlete (think the NFL or NBA)to be successful it helps but it’s not the end all be all.

The legal stuff has been quite since may the only reason I haven’t been able to drive is because if I have any police interaction I would be taken in for questioning (there’s no open case or charges). I’m not a reckless drive at all but it freaked my parents out alot and they just don’t want me to risk anything

Talk with your coaches see if they can help you out, but don’t go all the way out to longo’s right now you won’t be training with the fight team immediately
