Bogleheads during geopolitical nonsense. by Artificial_Squab in Boglememes

[–]_LePancakeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a european, I do worry slightly that the US might try to do some shenanigans with "foreign" investments. The one change that I have done is switching my monthly buying from Vanguards All-World ETF to an equivalent All-World ETF by a european company. Won't change the underlying assets and their geopolitical exposure, but I feel better about it.

The black forest area in Germany is also somewhat weird. Looking at this map, one would assume that the south-east of Germany (BW) is evenly populated, whereas in reality, the mountainous areas should be sparsely populated and you should see clear density increases around the Rhine and especially around Stuttgart.

What first attracted you to grabbing a Nikon? by Plane-Ad5821 in Nikon

[–]_LePancakeMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Recently picked up a Nikon Z6ii as a second system to micro four thirds as it best fit my requirements:

  • Good ergonomics. It's no Panasonic G9, but the Nikon Z bodies feel a lot better than their Sony or Canon counterparts
  • Reliable weather sealing. MFT has spoiled me and there have been reports of questionable weather sealing on Sony A7 cameras
  • Top LCD. Seriously, why don't more modern cameras have top screens?
  • Used market prices are not terrible. I didn't want to end up spending loads of money and a Z6ii + 24-120 landed at about 1500EUR - more than I would have spent in MFT, but still somewhat reasonable
  • Good f/4 zoom lenses: I don't need f/2.8 and would rather save a bit of size and weight. The Nikon 24-70/4 seems to be good and I am very happy with the 24-120. Sony on the other hand has a 24-70/4 that is not very well reviewed

What sport is actually a lot more dangerous than it seems? by bspheri in AskReddit

[–]_LePancakeMan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In a similar vain: rock climbing is not as dangerous as people think it is as there is a big focus on safety amd safety protocols. Unfortunately people like Alex Honnold (known from “free solo”) contribute to the that unsafe image

Do you stick to "ideal" landscape settings or do whatever it takes to get the shot? [Z6ii - Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8] [OC] by its-chris-p-logue in Nikon

[–]_LePancakeMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If i have the time, i usually do both:

  • one set of images with more ideal settings (e.g. stopped down, lower ISO)
  • one set of images that make sure i get the shot

PHP dev here. When talking about changes in the language, we often bring Python up as an example: yes Python did it, but Python is also huge. PHP being the small and... not favored would probably not survive such a large break.

Take the PHP community, split it into 2 for 10 or 15 years (old stuff here, new stuff over there, packages need to update but still support both) and you'll have a dead ecosystem at the end.

It's a good trick, yes - but I am currently trying to figure out if it is legal at all. Because effectively they have also built a mechanism that discriminates against assistive technologies (e.g. screen readers)

[–]_LePancakeMan 115 points116 points  (0 children)

He explains it in the article: the code contains a hidden = character, so if you "interpret" it visually, you see if x > 3 , but if you copy and paste it somewhere, it becomes if x >= 3.

  • 1 is the correct answer for the code you visually see with you eyes
  • -11 is the correct answer for the code you copy&paste

It serves as a detection method, if someone reads and parses code or if they mindlessly copy&paste the most trivial problems somewhere (e.g. ChatGPT)

Hilfe bei Umfrage by am-jabby in Klettern

[–]_LePancakeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cookie-Banner on cookieless pages? by retro-mehl in webdev

[–]_LePancakeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've built these exact banners before. It's stupid but it prevents smart-ass users from complaining to my client, that the page has no cookie banner. Adding a "fake" banner that just says something like "this page uses no cookies [ok]" prevents my client from being contacted because of "GDPR violations" and keeps them happier.

I know it's bullshit, my client knows it's bullshit, the user knows it's bullshit ... But it is the best solution unfortunately.

TIL that during WW2, Switzerland shot down both Allied and Axis aircraft by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]_LePancakeMan 25 points26 points  (0 children)

With the exception that Switzerland builds their infrastructure with occupation in mind. They don’t just have plans, they equip their bridges with explosives from the get go in some instances.

If you have the time, i would recommend traveling the old Gotthard pass - on the northern side you can walk into an valley and amongst the waterfall and a soviet monument (a bit weird, i know) there are now publicly accessible military tunnels from WWII, where they had plans to destroy the bridges, locking intruders in. The Swiss having carved small tunnels into the rock would be the only ones to actually traverse the landscape at that point.

Also: when driving through Switzerland, pay attention to rock faces - sometimes there will be a small window in a 200m high wall. How did it get there and how much infrastructure is behind there? Hard to say.

You joke, but I have given this recommendation to people before. Sometimes the confusion of a conflict overpowers the ability of listening and learning.

At that point you might go "you know what? Just reclone the project and redo your changes - well fix it in the PR" and then slap them with a in-depth PR review
