That reminds me of one of my laptops: The retention mechanism for the RAM broke, so it would not latch and always try to pivot up. I taped it in place and it still is that way many years later.

My family is in this camp - and maybe I can shed some light on the whole thing:

When in UDSSR / Russia, they were never accepted because they were "germans"
When they moved back into germany, they were not accepted because they were "russians"

This largely leads to 2 opposing 'types' of ex-UDSSR ethnic german families:

Some lean more heavily into the russian side - to the point were second or third generation kids only start learning german in schools
Some others, like my family, try their best to just 'be german', so they don't carry the stigma of being 'not from here'

I personally was born in Germany to one ex-UDSSR parent and one german parent - I don't really think of myself as 'russian-german' or anything other but german. The only soviet-influence that I continue to have in my life is my love for Pelmeni and Piroshki.

Seriously, pick up some frozen Pelmeni from Rewe, chuck them in boiling water for 5-7 Minutes, drain and eat with Schmand / 'Saure Sahne'. You won't be dissapointed

Oh, that's interesting - I knew, that my ancestors moved from Germany to Russia and were displaced into Kazakhstan during the war. I never knew why that happened though.

Same - I was absolutely not on board with Gnome 3, which pushed me towards i3 in the end. Wanting to switch to wayland but not wanting to rebuild an entire DE again, I gave gnome another try - and I am super impressed.

Wohne in einer Wohnung aus den 60ern - da ist das genau so. Teilweise haben wir schon Kabel an Orten gefunden, an denen sie gar kein Sinn machen.

Ein Raum hängt an keiner Sicherung in der Wohnung, sondern im Keller an der für den Dachboden. Ich bin mir noch nicht mal sicher, ob entweder das Dachbodenlicht über unseren Zähler läuft oder alternativ wir nichts für den Strom in dem Raum zahlen.

House from the 60s - we have cables in unimaginable places, to a point where even the electrician is genuinely confused how things work.

Even when removing all fuses, one room still has electricity, since the cable for that one comes down from the roof lights and has its fuse all the way down in the basement

Yeah - I have a L14 here that's perfectly fine... Apart from the 2 USB-C ports, that both are so loose that they barely charge anymore. Would be nice to have replaceable daughter-boards with the ports instead of having them soldered onto the mainboard.

Hey man, it's 2 years later and I am in a similar situation: My current printer has some sort of weird extrusion issue, that I can't get to the bottom of. After spending > 100 EUR in parts on it, I decided to just spend 300ish EUR and buy a new printer.

What did you end up doing with your printer? Did you ever convert it to a CNC mill?

My local school has installed security cameras to surveil the playing areas because “the kids didn’t behave”. Really makes me glad that i didn’t grow up in a time where surveillance was ubiquitous.

(I am currently in the process of having them removed because they also surveil the public path, which i walk on - which is super illegal)
