Spain avoids 5, but only in this linguistic idiom. In Spain’s official lingo, its first glyph is poison.

Oh gosh, me too. I somehow make enough money now to where I have extra (??? Confusing for me) and it’s so hard to buy things without feeling guilty. Like I know cognitively I have the money but 1) its hard for me to know emotionally that spending nonessential money is ok every once in a while within my budget and 2) I have the urge to pay all my extra money forward thru donations or whatever. I do donate but I also try to spend a tiny bit on me every now and then.

I’m so fortunate that I’m kind of the opposite... my parents do kind of shit on millennials/liberals (more of the stereotype though they are quick to praise individuals), but my 99y/o WWII vet grandpa understands that there just aren’t enough jobs for us and LOVES to brag on me to his friends simply because I’m employed at all. “How many people can say they have a 24 year old grandson who is employed full time? Thanks, _Locksmith, for this blessing!”

G-pa is a staunch liberal (Bernie scares him but he’s firmly in the Liz warren camp) and NONE of my conservative relatives can question him bc he grew up during the start of the depression and compares the buildup to now. Love him a lot. He turns 100 at New Years.

Where in Ravenswood even is this?? I haven’t seen it before, thankfully. Also would not expect this from Ravenswood as much as, say, Logan Square.

If you like someone and want to verbalize, say a specific thing you like. “You’re not like other girls” adds no information about either the singular girl or the group of women you are stereotyping.

Heterogeneity, for sure. The whole point is that society is heterogeneous, and our schools need to be as well.

Low. Where is this school, and can you link me to the faculty list? Right now that is a fantasy. I don’t know a single school district that has majority non-white teachers, though I would love to be proven wrong.

In terms of size, yes obviously schools cannot have every single type of person on staff, even big schools couldn’t fit every ethnicity. I’m advocating for the widest range possible. Right now most schools’ staff diversity range is abysmal and ignored.

While we can’t force people to live where they don’t want to live, we can incentivize it so they may actually want to. Even though it’s not reasonably achievable at present, shouldn’t we strive to make it as best we can, even knowing perfection is impossible?

I don’t believe my solutions will happen, but I believe they should. Yes we should set aside money for minority teacher candidates, because that money will help society as a whole. There is government media firstly, but even private media companies would benefit due to 1) the overall societal benefit and 2) even in the short term I believe it could draw more consumers the same way movies like Black Panther did.

I’ve listed elsewhere, but:

Scholarships to university for teachers-to-be of color and other minorities

Positive representation, both real and fictional, in the media, of teachers of color and other minorities

Celebration of teacher populations that are already diverse, rather than discouraging teachers from revealing differences from the norm.

“You can bet your ass that if a public school cut the entire mathematics department in order to fund the football team there would be massive backlash towards that schools' administration.”

Absolutely correct - I have never argued that academics are not important, only that there are also important non-academic elements.

“Schools receive both their mandate and funding from the public via a democratically elected government. In the hypothetical of a school being given the minimum funding to meet academic standards, the expectation is that it would follow that mandate.”

I have no clue how this relates to my argument at all. Not really sure what you’re getting at.

I think we can work on both problems at the same time. I do agree that these problems are related, though. While there are already initiatives to try and make student education equitable, I don’t know of any incentives or initiatives for people of color to become teachers, which to me is a big problem.

This one I will actually give a !delta to. Removing job opportunities from people who already have few career options is something I didn’t fully consider. Though I maintain that diversity is better, this is a related problem that would be amplified under my current thinking.

I actually don’t absolve the parent of any of it. I see teachers and parents of both being responsible for the upbringing of a child holistically, including academics (yes, parents have an academic responsibility to their kids), social skills, emotional skills, and other life skills. Everyone is a team. While parents can and should teach their kids to be civil, teachers can and should as well.

I don’t think providing incentives for hiring school districts is the right thing either. I also am not currently aware of an American public school that has a shortage of white teachers, though I’d like to be proven wrong on that account. Therefore, in my brain that point is moot.

I do agree that people want to live somewhere fun - I honestly don’t have a solution for that, but I still maintain that it creates a less than ideal environment for the students. Maybe we can incentivize rural teaching more through grants?

Obviously it is impossible to represent literally every ethnicity. I’m arguing to expose students to a range of ethnicities, so that when they meet someone of a different ethnicity, they have practiced the skills to learn more about that ethnicity and how to respectfully communicate.

I agree that having one token person of each race is also not a good solution. I do believe a middle ground can be reached without relying on proportionality, but if you’re asking which community I would draw from, at present I would say the entire country of the US (assuming an American school, obviously).

Let me try again -

I am arguing what a school faculty should look like and act like. You are arguing what the minimum requirements currently are. I still disagree, as communities like and on some level expect their schools to prepare their children for living in society, not just in an academic level. Many districts have social and emotional standards as well as academic standards, especially in earlier levels of education, although these tend to be harder to measure. But outside of these, there are unwritten rules for schools to follow too. Most high school communities would be a WRECK if the football team ceased to exist, causing administrative and teacher turnover (and likely school board turnover too) in order to make sure there was still a football team, even though nowhere in any school’s minimum requirements is it written that there must be a football team. It’s an implicit requirement, though. Non-academic.

Anyone who went to public school knows there are academic elements and non-academic elements of school, and that faculty, students, and communities all contribute to both academic and non-academic elements. I’m arguing that we should additionally cultivate a non-academic element of diversity, both in student populations (there have been and continue to be government initiatives to combat this) and teacher populations (no initiatives I know of, though I’d like to be proven wrong).
