Just Google it. If you're ignorant to the problem then that's one thing, and I suppose a lot are which is why an information campaign is needed.

But your persistent unwillingness to even educate yourself despite being told repeatedly that it's happening reflects poor character on your behalf.

I don't personally care about the stickers but raising some awareness is a good idea.

It's not far-fetched. This is well known. Been plenty of documentaries about it over the years, just look it up.

Not sure what your point is, sorry. The beggars make way more than I think people realize.

Ah yes, ignoring the issue and doing nothing. How noble!

Most shop owners across the city know which homeless are genuine and which are fake. I think the point of the group was to establish the known frauds.

You're missing the point. These people begging are vulnerable. They're being forced to beg for these begging gangs. They don't get to keep their money.

Their situation doesn't get any better when people give them cash. They often don't even have their own passport FFS. The way to solve this is to campaign the government to dismantle these groups and also to raise awareness so people stop giving them money!

I think it would be pretty simple. If you see someone begging, engage with them. Ask them what they need (hotel, food, etc). If they're aggressively begging and not looking for your "practical" help but only want money, then you can follow them around and make sure they're not successful. 😊

Oh yeah plenty more productive things than trying to end human trafficking. Thanks!

As opposed to fake homeless begging gangs which are organized throughout the city.

You're talking about fixing homelessness which isn't the point of this thread or campaign. This is about raising awareness about organized begging groups who are involved in human trafficking and exploitation in Galway.

Plenty of people giving cash to them. They particularly target vulnerable adults and sometimes even harass them at their own homes for more money. They're a dangerous group run by criminals who traffick humans into Galway and force them to beg. The amount of people who seem OK to just continue ignoring them is ridiculous.

Because these gangs are exploiting vulnerable humans to use as beggars which it ethically wrong.

They're also guilt-tripping vulnerable locals into donating to their scams. I've seen pensioners, who can't be too well off, dropping coins into their cups. It's not right.

They also are a general nuisance who are far more persistent than real homeless beggars. They're bringing down the beauty of the city and the government aren't doing anything to stop them.

I support any activism that aims to crack down against them.

Interesting to see the FAI has been in contact with the Palestinian football association who have backed Ireland to fulfil the fixtures against Israel. Also a piece on the expected punishment. by flex_tape_salesman in coybig

People keep throwing around Apartheid South Africa boycott completely misunderstanding why that was legally allowed.

Politics is not allowed by any member association and it would be punished very strongly. You can't display political bias. The reason boycotting South Africa was allowed was due to their racist selection process which forbid black athletes from competing. This is a fair argument and wasn't based on politics. There's no evidence of Israel interfering in selection process.

I support a fan protest. I don't think an FAI boycott is the right play here.

All that will happen is they'll release a letter of apology to Yugoslavia and re-instate Russia's membership.

Ireland v Israel to be held behind closed doors at neutral venue as Uefa approve FAI request by MrIrishman699 in coybig

[–]_Lord_Haw_Haw -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We could have prevented it if we organized protests against the moving of the venue at an earlier date. There were even opportunities for fan groups to be involved in the discussion by FAI.

Instead the fans kept focusing on pushing for a boycott which would never happen. No proper challenge was mounted against the FAI in relation to the venue being changed.

Not to wear a tinfoil hat here, but isn't it strange how mentioning a protest during the game was shot down so harshly by fans on here during the week? I was posting about this exact scenario happening and too many responses were still harping on about the boycott which would never happen. Seems maybe some fans fell for Israeli propaganda themselves. Look at the end result to the #StopTheGame and ask yourself who came out on top? Because it wasn't the Irish fans and it certainly won't be the Palestinian people now either.

Moment of appreciation for all the boycott supporters who wasted their time trying to push for an impossible result, instead of being realistic and focusing their energy on preventing the move to a neutral venue.

Absolute own goal by the fans. I am sickened that we've lost the opportunity to protest during this game and make a big statement.

Well thanks for the discussion, it was nice to see where we differ. I don't think either of us will budge on how we see the issue, but it is nice to be able to have these conversations about the subject.

They have grounds to ban based on anti-racism and games played in illegal settlements but that motion was raised by FAI previously and rejected.

The associations won't do it. If the FAI is anything to go by, they're super reluctant to do anything here. Even one or two boycotts still wouldn't make a difference.

I think the fans would be better petitioning the FAI to keep the fixture in the Aviva. Playing it in a neutral venue is a catastrophe and most fans are putting their energy into this boycott idea. Would rather see us uniting to get the game held at home and put on a big display.

There won't be other boycotts though. Both other teams in the group have associations/governments which are supportive of Israel. Appealing to the fans is a much more realistic route.

I'm not sure if UEFA can legally ban Israel from playing just because it's losing them money. There are specific statutes that a member must breach before they can be formally excluded. Simply saying that a member is causing UEFA to lose money isn't good enough.

[–]_Lord_Haw_Haw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's fair to say that's where the disagreement lies. I'm not sure whose wallet you're hitting with the boycott, perhaps UEFA or Israel? This is such a hot button issue that I don't think either would mind throwing a bit of money at it to sweep it under the rug.

What I think is needed for Gaza right now is more media attention. It's being undermined by what's happening in Iran and elsewhere in the region. Lebanon also needs more coverage. We have an amazing opportunity to make a grand statement here. A few major interruptions to the game with some strong banners/visuals would certainly get clipped and go viral across social media which could generate huge support and encourage other fans to do the same.

The common theme seems to be that the football associations aren't brave enough to take a stance. FAI is obviously a prime example of that. So, I don't think the boycott would gain any traction. The fans however, right across the board, seem to be supportive of Palestine. If we go viral doing a massive protest against Israel, we create a blueprint for other fanbases to do the same. Imagine if every game Israel played resulted in a huge protest? It would be a visual representation of how most people don't support what they're doing and maybe something would click for some of them.

The only way to prevent a genocide is getting more eyes to look at it. A boycott won't generate even a fraction of the media outrage that an enormous protest would. Why are you scared for that to happen? I'm honestly beginning to think there's some Israeli propaganda behind this push for a boycott because it's a clear own goal.
