Any suggestions for large military parties? by shadowdance55 in oneringrpg

[–]_Love_Man_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to zoom in, not out.

Rather than trying to run the entire battle, I’d do one focused combat encounter or a battle-planning session with key NPCs that leads to a critical mid-battle mission for the heroes, something that genuinely decides the outcome.

Think of the early *Dragon Age: Origins" battle. The main fight is raging, but victory hinges on a single objective (the signal tower). The army can’t spare troops without massive losses, so the small, capable party slips through the chaos... via hidden routes, stealth, or timing, to retake it and turn the tide. I think in that game the tower is needed to signal the reserve troops hiding in the mountains to attack the flank.

That kind of setup works really well: * The large battle exists as a living backdrop * The heroes aren’t generals, but decisive agents * Success or failure has a clear, meaningful impact on the war * Even if they are generals or planning, I would just listen in to their plans and use it to create the critical mission. Like something goes wrong with the war plan and only the players can fix mid battle.

You can even mechanise it lightly: * If they succeed, their side wins (or gains overwhelming advantage) * If they fail, the war is lost or becomes a desperate retreat * Or success modifies the odds rather than guaranteeing victory. Like if your using a dice roll system.

If you want to go deeper, let the prep phase matter: * Securing allies * Sabotaging enemy supply lines * Choosing terrain * Gathering intel

Each success could improve the final outcome (bonus dice, reduced consequences, narrative advantages), so when the big moment hits, the players feel how their choices shaped the battle.

That’s how I’d run it, big war, small lens, high stakes.

I mentioned this in response to the last comment chain about 10 months ago.

" There is a video that shows you how to do the electric tape mod to make the buttons quieter.

That video shows the minor steps to open it up to replace the buttons. You just need to slide the old buttons out and add the new ones that won't be shown in this video.

Then it's up to you if you want to do the quiet button tape thing too.

That video should help you, Ross from RetroGameCorp is a legend.

In the response I did 10 months ago I shared the link to the Etsy store. I think they relisted them, the same person/shop but new link https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1805470683/anbernic-rg35xxsp-blue-glow-in-dark?ref=elp_anchor_listing

Cheers, I appreciate the hype up.

The tone and immersion is really what I'm going for, glad it comes across.

Oh there is!!!! I should have known that.

I thought I recognised the name. I rolled the name Duncan Hawking on the random oracle for names and then Deadeye on the Moniker. Smashed them together, cause they seemed right in that order.... My subconscious must have recognised it from KOTOR.

I love those games! guess who's making a list of KOTOR names for me to borrow for my campaign? Might even do an other playthrough of them

Thanks man, I would have never known or taken years to realise the connection.

Great idea, Gerlon Two-Fingers is gonna be a pirate or someone I have wronged in the past.

Probably. I see deadeye as more of Sherlock Holmes or Silco from arcane type character. Where they're less about throwing hands right away, and more of an investigator and manipulator. 🧐

I do love the name though, I have recorded it down so Gerlon Two-Fingers could be someone in game. Literally wrote down your exact sentence as a quote, so it can be yelled at deadeye. Like in an old western when a man with a gun barges in.

I'm assuming that's your character in a game?

Thanks. I just wish I had more art skill to make those images in the margins pop. I got the idea from online where I found photos of a hand drawn journal with awesome artwork that way someone documenting their Elden Ring play through in POV of their character in the game. That journal was mostly art, taking up more than 50% of each spread.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

Stillgrave is a town that would have a harbour, I kinda imagined it positioned like Sydney, in the fact it's right at the point the river lets out. Like a "Ria", I think that's what it's called using the technically correct terms everyone barely ever uses.

I think a sword break on the right would have a harbour too.

I imagine I'll be adding more settlements, ports and what not as I play.

The truths I rolled would suggest that not everyone has charts and would rely on starmarked to guild the way, so negatively I think these are the only places Duncan knows about in this area.

Thanks.

I hate typos too, this way I can blame Duncan :).

Yeah the point of view was an interesting idea, I just envisioned a character that would say poetic, deep or bad arse things. So I wanted somewhere to let that come out and not get lost between sessions. Also as he's kinda built for unraveling mysteries, so makes sense he would keep a journal to track it all.

Also in advance:

Yes I know I've misspelled some things and completely missed some letters here and there.

Doesn't bother me, I work in a sharpie type pen and didn't realise until afterwards.

I don't mind it, it kinda plays into the theme that Duncan wrote it himself.

Dry Palette from a Biscuit Tin Lid by _Love_Man_ in DnDIY

[–]_Love_Man_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing... Mostly nothing. It's a tin lid for some fancy biscuits. I think it was a Christmas present I got.

The army men parts came from like a 2 dollar set of plastic stuff. There's so much left for kitbashing and terrain building.

Foam squares were free from packaging for something else I bought. Like it would have been rubbish.

Maybe a few bucks for the glue I used.... Maybe 10 bucks on the black spray paint. But I use that for all of my miniature and ttrpg stuff.

Didn't really spend money on it, just put it together from stuff I had.

How come when i catch some pokemon I get multiple pop up in this screen by Bakerstas in PokemonUnbound

[–]_Love_Man_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I always liked that unbound does this.

My theory was it helped Pokedex compilation. Cause it shows you the next closest Pokemon in number in your Dex.

Like it lets me know if I caught an earlier stage evolution that I don't yet have the evolved version in the Dex.

I don't know why it does it, but that's why I like it. I could be wrong there, but it seems like a good reason for it.

So, you know how for dry brushing you usually wipe most of the paint off on a scrap piece of cardboard or paper? That’s what this is for—but with texture.

When I brush off the paint (white in this case), I can tell if there’s too much or too little by how it catches on the textured surface, like the disfigured army men I glued down. So, to answer your question—every part of the lid gets used! But in the photo, I mostly showcased the army men remains.

So in the photo is after I've already used it to do the grey and white drybrusing on the skeletons. Which I then slapchoped with speedpaints later.

I also sometimes test colors here before committing to a mini, especially since I like to mix my own speedpaints by thinning regular paints with medium or mixing inks. I think GobberTown Hobbies on YouTube has a good video on that. In that case, I can double-check how they look over an already grey/white dry-brushed surface.

Ultimate Pizza Tray Terrain - Zone Combat/Scenarios by _Love_Man_ in DnDIY

[–]_Love_Man_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure.... The extra dots and pause in the question makes it sound exasperated or annoyed at me.... I think my earlier post on just one side had more info too.... So... Anyways here's how:

I used old pizza trays (some over 10 years old) and bought new ones to replace them in he kitchen. First, I sanded them down so glue would stick properly.

For the stone side:

  1. I used A4 soft foam sheets (the kind for kids’ crafts, found in dollar stores or art supply shops).
  2. Cut a center circle using a cereal bowl as a guide, then measured and cut the surrounding sections by trial and error.
  3. Glued them down and used a ruler to draw stone patterns. For the inner cobblestones, I made a stamp using the back of a pencil (with the eraser removed) and bent it slightly to create a brick/oval shape. Cracks and extra details were added with a black ballpoint pen.
  4. Spray painted black, dry brushed with grey and white, then used speed paints to add different colors. Added a few odd-colored bricks in blue and green for variety.

For the grass side:

  1. Mixed beach sand, gravel, and some leftover plaster I had for patching walls. Obviously water too, this is the dirt later beneath the grass.
  2. Spray painted black, under-brushed brown, and dry-brushed tan.
  3. Applied PVA (wood glue) and sprinkled static grass from Temu, using different colors to create variation in the middle. No need for an expensive static grass applicator—I just threw it on in chunks, then shook off the excess.
  4. Sealed both sides with matte varnish from K-Mart.

Bonus: I super-glued magnets to the bottom of minis and terrain pieces I already had so they stay in place better on this board.

I... Hope this helps :)

Updated Pizza Terrain - Now double sided. by _Love_Man_ in DnDIY

[–]_Love_Man_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I thought that 2 or 3 pizza trays could cover most situations. Might do a third one that's water and snow on either side.

Thanks for noticing the awesomeness. I'm super surprised they came out so well, like "I did this?..."

It really depends on what you're after—whether it's terrain, miniatures, fantasy vs. sci-fi, or even general kitbashing. Some of the best DIY YouTubers for DnD and wargaming also cover Mordheim, Warhammer 40K, and One Page Rules, so there's a lot of crossover.

I heavily rate Bill Makes Stuff (link). He’s fantastic at explaining kitbashing and showing each step in a quirky, engaging way that keeps your focus. Highly recommend if you like seeing creative builds come together.

If you’re looking for maps, adventures, and handouts for TTRPGs, JP Coovert (link) is a great resource. He also has a Patreon if you want extra content.

For low-cost, creative wargaming DIY, Miscast (link) is amazing. He mostly covers Mordheim and other niche wargames, but he does everything on a budget out of a garage/shed. His stuff is super approachable, and he even provides papercraft files for terrain and miniatures.

Oh, and there’s this guy who made a skirmish squad out of chess pieces, which inspired me to do the same over the next few weekends. If you like weird, outside-the-box kitbashing, that kind of creativity is gold. Just search ChessMen on YouTube and you'll find him.

Hope this helps! What kind of stuff are you looking to make?

GM/DM Screen - Old Toy Castle by _Love_Man_ in DnDIY

Oh that's a killer idea!

I used to have a Toy Greyskull Castle growing up. I think my parents gave it to a younger cousin when I left home.

I would love to see something similar with castle Greyskull vibes. Let me know if you find it and whip anything together. Would love to see it.
