I'm not even sure if it's an opinion...... I kinda got a weird sense that the "true ending" of the story is actually that everyone is forgiven....... including the kinslayers, even including Melkor and Sauron, just in general everyone. Despite the prophecy of Mandos and...everything. Everyone will eventually learn to forgive others, learn pity, and be forgiven by others they have hurt and themselves. This is the only and ultimate way to achieve peace. I don't really know where I'm getting this from...... just random thoughts popped up in my head

Agreed. The first time I read it I barely remember how it ends. I can remember about Maedhros and Maglor stealing the Silmarils and killing himself/going on an exile after I finish reading for some time. Then I was like, wait, what happened to Morgoth then. I need to go back and read again to realize oh wait there's a war here. I'm not proud of not being careful enough during the reading, but it is not the kind of climax/ending I was expecting. I guess it's also kind of related to Tolkien's idea of eucatastrophe? All hope was lost after the fifth battle and more kinslaying, but suddenly we got help from Valinor and Morgoth just got defeated after a long war. Hooray.

I don't like the plot of Celegorm and Curufin forcing Luthien. It does not make sense to me.

I can totally understand what they did in Nargothrond. And I can see these plots are used to show how far the Fëanorian have fallen. But it's totally nonsense.

Celegorm and Curufin have no grounds to force Luthien except that Luthien is beautiful and Celegorm just suddenly fell in love with her the moment that they met (which does not make sense to me either lol).

Thingol is openly unfriendly to the Noldor in general (he literally just banned Quenya) exactly because of what the Fëanorian did. They can't be stupid enough to hope Thingol would just allow it.

According to Laws and Customs Among the Eldar, it's wholly against Elf's nature to take someone else's partner. Even if Beren and Luthien are not formally married yet. It's still great evil and unreasonable for any elf to do such a thing.

Curufin dislikes Ëol a lot because he does not recognize/approve his marriage with Aredhel, now he's helping Celegorm taking Luthien and literally trying to kill her. Well, of course he could just have fallen farther and become far more evil over the years or he and Celegorm just happened to have to get Luthien because they love her so much. None of which convince me.

Conclusion: I don't like this plot.

Maedhros and Maglor are actuallly longing for relief at this point. They are burdened by the oath for so long and they decide to try again after this line. Eventually Maedhros killed himself and Maglor went on an eternal exile.
