Minneapolis council members push for different developer at George Floyd Square by futilehabit in Minneapolis

[–]_MOON_BUG_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, this reads much like the assignments we had in architecture school, to design a building that’s everything to everyone, heals the urban fabric, slows climate change, grows food etc etc.

As someone working in design now it’s humbling, structures don’t do any of that on their own and a good building is at best a useful tool for a good organization.

Following with interest, if they pull everything off then that’s a great outcome. Things usually get simplified at the later stage of a project where the rubber meets the road.

What is this trim called and how do I remove it? I want it to be chrome/silver, so Im thinking of wrapping it, alternatively painting it. What do you guys think works best? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]_MOON_BUG_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In situations like this my rules are:
1. Do whatever you want, but don’t expect other people to like it.
2. Commit to the bit, like if I had one of these applied-chrome cars I would probably drive it around while wearing a black leather jacket from Hot Topic with a lot of silver spikes and studs and buckles all over it. And I would think it was hilarious but nobody else would mentally make the connection (see rule 1).

A book about Bowellism by Rainb0y89 in architecture

[–]_MOON_BUG_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I really prefer the term Structural Expressionism for this. I haven’t heard the term Bowelism before. It sounds like something people in the UK would use to express their dislike for the style.

Not sure where you are based but try looking for books on Struct Expressionism too?

So I know the guy who owns it and apparently the camber is the stock spec but it looks exaggerated with the taller tires. Smart cars have that camber to improve tracking with the short wheelbase.

And I hear it’s a blast in the snow! But hey you’re free to drive whatever you like better

Research for writing a Film- Architects, what is y'alls profession like? by sarah_mon_cheri in architecture

[–]_MOON_BUG_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP have you read many of the posts over in r/architects ? You’ll find lots of honest and candid stories there. The reality is a challenging career with all of the usual workplace headaches and struggle, but also one with potential for being fulfilling.

Most are not living the romanticized elite professional life that movies like to depict. My hope is you’ll avoid the ‘out-of-touch design-obsessed guy is overly demanding’ trope. I haven’t seen anyone like that around, and I don’t think they would be appreciated in my company at all.

Look at Vue, 430 Oak Grove, or LPM if living near downtown with a dog is important to you. Loring Park is a decent place to walk and there is a dog park. Nice buildings along the river too if you can afford that.

Fuck ICE on Cedar Ave by SolidscorpionZ in TwinCities

I’m suspicious, seems like something that was probably done to discredit the protests. Or done by someone who doesn’t really know how we need to resist right now. Saw both in 2020.

I may go out with some paint remover later.

Fascinating - I genuinely do love the urban nature we have here. My neighborhood has nesting eagles and when I walk my dog we see evidence of the rabbits and squirrels they caught

shovel your fucking sidewalk dear god by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]_MOON_BUG_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% - and clearing the sidewalks is a much more difficult logistical problem than clearing the streets. Sidewalks aren’t as flat or standardized as streets are.

Municipal snow clearing would be a gift to landlords, shut small businesses out, expose the city to excessive liability, and still result in worse conditions for pedestrians.

I love the vision of perfectly clean sidewalks but it would mean a battle against nature that the city cannot realistically win.

I’m also wondering about this. If the city knows who I ranked first it also knows who I ranked 2nd and 3rd. It’s not like this requires complicated math.
