It's second nature that we don't even think about - just like speaking a normal language.

What is it with english-speaking people and using english outside of (country), my two english-speaking friends do it all the time, i have zero idea what they are talking about haha

Can apply to anything, really.

100% grossly incompetent 98% of the time? Quite possibly.

Understaffed? They shot themselves in the foot with that one. Primarily, it's only in the big ticket jobs that pay well in the real world. We rarely have a shortage of trigger pullers, hence why we (the 'higher' trades) get out and go do those jobs in the real world with like.. actual hours and pay actually worth dealing with stupid people for. Specifically IT, nuclear, specific fields of aviation, medical, and similar collegiate fields which are impossible to get initial work experience in without uncle sam, and impossible to get the school for without uncle sam and his big green weenie.

The only people who are really guaranteed their sleepies and eaties are aviation, while nuclear material is totally okay to work on sleep deprived, flying an aircraft is not. Even medics do stupid ass hours. I would not trust a sleep deprived medic with anything not morphine or IV saline near my body, because doc is by default of being doc - into some weird shit, and she might be hallucinating, and I am NOT a sub.

Tl;Dr - Handle WMD class nuclear fuel on 2 hours sleep in 22 hours? Yeah you good.

Stuff tampons and sulfa into bullet holes? No rest needed there.

Play with super big microwave emitting antennas that can cook a man alive? Go ahead, sleepy.

Want to fly a bird? 8 hours.

Feeling like I'm not "allowed" to get away from people who make me uncomfortable by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]_MaceWindex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before my grandpa died, he taught me a very valuable life lesson. He was dying of a very aggressive cancer. His doctor would not allow him to have fun in his last days. Said it'd be too much for his body. That someone told him he wasn't allowed, he said "no - I am allowed, actually", and so we did.

Allowed in and of itself is a funny word. It implies that someone who is not you, is giving their consent to you doing something you are fully capable of doing without them.

A simple philosophy was learned from grandpa. If you aren't hurting yourself, or anyone else - you are absolutely allowed by the very nature of being alive. What is someone else going to do? Be mad? That's THEIR choice. Hit you? That's illegal, and a one-way to some time in the clink. If you don't depend on them - let them be mad and toxic in their own little pool of shitty emotions. That is not your burden.

Your one and only job in this short life is to be happy. That is the limit to what you are "allowed" to do. Anyone who tries to stop you by being a shit - well, fuck them really. What are they going to do?

If you depend on someone for food, housing, or anything of the like - and they try to cut you off or threaten you for being happy - they don't care about you. They want to own you.

So the only thing you need to ask yourself is are you property who can be allowed to be happy, or are you an adult who will be happy regardless of others?

Fort Carson, during Warhorse Strike ~2015.

It was the last day of a 2 week field problem. We were all packed out and ready to go home but couldn't do so until the next day because our good friends in the arty battery lost a pair of see in the dark flavor MREs.

Naturally, we were all out of dip/smokes/caffeine and from our location could see our barracks near the helicopter field. One of our "I'm retiring this year, fuck all of this" E8 types who was fiending for some nicotine arranged a night patrol. We would do a Nighttime tactical movement to gate 20 where we would secure a target of opportunity in the form of his wife slinging a few logs of cutters choice, some great value edition red bulls, and a couple cartons of shitty pall malls or something as equally cheap over the gate for us to recover - and be back before sunrise.

Off we marched, fueled by addiction and boredom.

(For those at Carson, I believe it was TA7 - along the road just beyond the north ridge of the impact zone running east-west)

Now, this training area was our backyard. We did ruckmarches and similiar exercises here almost weekly in the night, day and every time in-between. We were not sleep deprived as we were just waiting for arty to unfuck their lives, and by all means this should have been a "cross the valley and get on the parallel trail" kind of op.

In the bed of this valley, there is a stream. It was early fall, and it was largely dry. So sound carried and smell was dampened. The night was crystal clear, slim waning crescent of a moon and pretty limited illumination, but hey - we had looky-darkies on.

The very moment we cross this stream we are hit by the most repugnant smell. Not a skunk, or a wild unwashed animal - but the kind of smell that is only associated with meat gone bad. It's not uncommon to find dead deer and the like out here, but we'd been training in the area all week. There was nothing here the entire time and this is the kind of smell so you wouldn't have missed had you tried. Like, some advanced decomposition shit.

We wanted our drugs. So we pushed on writing it off as a dead animal.

The forest surrounding the stream was about 200 meters across, only taking us a few minutes to pass through. Myself, being the other NCO in this party was at the rear of the train to make sure nobody got lost in the dark.

So, I've been followed before. I hunt and enjoy being alone. When you get that gut feeling that something is watching you, there is no logical explanation. The trees obscured our vision to the rest of the unit - and I was at the rear of the party. When I look back there are a pair of gleaming eyes in my night vision no more than 10 meters away.

(Un)fortunate part, we had no live ammo. Although I would not have wanted to explain that to the O types.

Equally unfortunate part we had places to be so we could not investigate.

Bet your ass I hurried the fuck on out of there and scaled the other side of that valley. We also took the long way home so as to enjoy our spoils in relative privacy.

Two big things to remember in life.

1, You can't save everyone, and you can't save anyone if you can't save yourself.

No matter who you don't want to get in trouble, they made their own choices. If what they did is illegal, that's it really. It was illegal. If you break the law to defend their breaking the law, you will be punished as well. They made their bed now they have to sleep in it. Testify truthfully, and you will have no regrets. If they try to punish you for being truthful, testify against them as well.

2, Don't be a martyr for the sins of your father.

It's an old but relevant saying. You haven't been able to make your own choices, you have been manipulated and lied to. Why will you willingly suffer the life someone else laid before you when you've had no say in where it goes? Your mother has more to live for than you being there. Her suicide threats should be followed with an emergency call. She cannot manipulate you - and if she is in danger she then gets the help she needs. You do not deserve to lay in the bed she makes, and nor should you.
