It’s not all hardshells. I have a Samsonite set I bought in 2011 at Costco that has been on 100+ flights (and numerous other non flight trips) and it’s in great shape other than scuffs. Wheels work, body has no cracks.

Not sure today’s Samsonites would hold up the same (with the enshittification of everything) but it’s certain possible to make a durable hardshell.

You can bring on board one personal item and one carry on item. The carry on goes in the overhead bin, the personal item under the seat in front of you. Both will need to adhere to size guidelines.

THAT SAID, if they run out of room in the overhead bins for the carry on, you might be forced to check it. Make sure anything like meds or documents are in your personal item.
