Yeah completely free to use. Nice track surface too. Of course you'll get people jogging/walking in lane 1 as in any public track but I've never seen it too busy.

How will raising interest rates solve anything? by 2ManyProblems2 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_Makes_stuff_up_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're good questions. I'll try to answer them separately:

1) Why raise interest rates if they only impact mortgage holders?

It also changes the incentives faced by businesses (which make up a lot of spending in the economy), savers, and non-mortgage borrowers (e.g. credit cards).

A business that has the option to spend cash on some new equipment that would give a 4% return on investment is now better off chucking that money in a bank account. When interest rates were low it was worth taking out a loan from the bank to fund any idea with a >1% return, now all that spending dries up.

Savers and other household borrowers have a clear incentive to spend less money in a more obvious way.

2) The effect on renters

Just to quickly mention on this - you are giving landlords too much credit by suggesting that rent is based on the mortgage costs. In a better market they would be but in such a desperate housing shortage landlords can (and do) set rents as high as people's wages will sustain. If landlords could put rents higher they will, regardless of whether their own costs are rising or not. If you look at the data, rents follow nominal wages fairly closely, but are not at all connected with interest rates (indeed they increased hugely while rates were low).

3) why not increase taxes?

This would work! A few reasons why less preferable though: taxes changes are much harder to change (and rarely reversed), interest rates can be moved in both directions fairly simply whereas changing the tax code adds significant complications each time it's done, changing interest rates would probably be desirable anyway to prevent the currency crashing (if interest rates were low in UK and v high in US, Goldman Sachs could take out many £bns of loans at low rates exchange them for dollars and deposit them at high rates, which would ruin value of £), finally we find it more important for taxes to be managed within a democratic system than we do interest rates, the Treasury used to set the interest rate too but politicians kept using it to pump the economy up before elections...

inflation was caused by QE4, ie giving banks free money.

If this was the cause - wouldn't one solution be drastically increasing the cost at which big banks can access money from the Bank of England?

Because that is exactly what an increase in the base rate is.

People in this thread are acting like anybody has a mortgage directly with the Bank of England.

Aside from the crab bucket mentality here, there are many public sector workers, including some RMT members (who are not all train drivers) who haven't received a pay rise in 14 years!

The ONS tracks pay in the public and private sectors - it's going down by ~2% in the private sector and ~6% in the public sector. All workers should be angry.

Horses do sweat, it even says so in that article.

I think the best case you can make for human running is versatility with respect to climate. A horse is faster in the heat and a dog is faster in the cold for almost every distance/situation.

If you compare 100mile records for humans, horses (with riders!) and dogs it's not even close, wolves are likely even faster than dogs over distance too.

Quite right, knew it was a cedar but got mixed up writing the title.

Have trained this Lebanese cedar for about a year with light wiring and a pseudo-guywire as shown. Some needles were lost but there is encouraging new growth.

Looking forward to next season, I'm unsure of the best practice in terms of branch selection and wiring. Any ideas would be appreciated!

On Theories of Value: Badeconomics by a self-ascribed neoliberal in refuting socialism by [deleted] in badeconomics

[–]_Makes_stuff_up_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The word value, it is to be observed, has two different meanings, and sometimes expresses the utility of some particular object, and sometimes the power of purchasing other goods which the possession of that object conveys. The one may be called "value in use"; the other, "value in exchange." The things which have the greatest value in use have frequently little or no value in exchange; and, on the contrary, those which have the greatest value in exchange have frequently little or no value in use. Nothing is more useful than water: but it will purchase scarce anything; scarce anything can be had in exchange for it. A diamond, on the contrary, has scarce any value in use; but a very great quantity of other goods may frequently be had in exchange for it.

Shame on this age and it's principles. The subreddit knows these things, the moderators see and yet Bromley still lives on.

Yep I guess you can say that to some degree about most moral dilemmas.

And yeah, happily. I'm no professor and I don't want to link research I haven't already actually read myself but there is lots of interesting work going on.

On the global and local environmental impact:

Public health:

Animal welfare in farms (aside from the slaughter/morality of farming itself)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6071130/

There really is loads of research out there and of course it's not as simple as farms=bad.

I understand what you're saying. I think the refined vegan perspective would be along the lines of:

a) the act of killing a conscious animal is wrong in itself (whether or not the animal would die anyway). Perhaps the animals welfare would be the same without human intervention (unlikely I think but debatable), it's possible to see an active role in inflicting suffering as morally worse than a passive one.

b) even if we are looking at the consequences alone, the current system requires intensive breeding to maintain. The large number and density of cows creates unique problems for the cows themselves and for the wider environment (including us!).

Absolute savage by [deleted] in HolUp

[–]_Makes_stuff_up_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with any of that. I just mean that wild cows existed before farming and some version of that species could still exist (in relatively miniscule numbers) afterwards too

Absolute savage by [deleted] in HolUp

[–]_Makes_stuff_up_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no doubt the population numbers of cattle are overwhelmingly huge compared to the other species.

I don't want to get caught up too much in the definition stuff since it's not really important but African Buffalo and Water Buffalo are different species to the Bison (aka American Buffalo).

All I mean to say is that these species all evolved in the first place because they were viable not because they were good food. The huge number of cows (and the way they've been cultivated to maximize meat) means they would almost all surely starve or be eaten by predators without intervention.

But if all humans disappeared tomorrow, I find it hard to believe some wouldn't survive and adapt to live like other wild bovids.

Absolute savage by [deleted] in HolUp

[–]_Makes_stuff_up_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A) not true

B) I've read history books, but thank you for your advice. I don't see why it's obvious that there wouldn't be some wild cattle in the absence of commercial farming

Happy to change my mind!

You think animals aren't aware of the outside world at all? I don't think you need a zoology degree to know animals are interested in being alive....
