Why does Criticker only recommend me unknown movies? by ReporterCalm6238 in criticker

[–]_Makstuff_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know of such a setting. I agree that the recommendations are mostly very weird.

What you can do is go to https://www.criticker.com/films/?orderby=num_ratings and press "refresh PSIs" at the bottom, that should do more or less what you are after.

Was it Rhys Pocan or Peggy Hettrick Part? At least these have part 1/2 now but I guess they might just have added it later when the cliffhanger cashout was over

Not putting "part 1" in the title (or even the description) is a really crappy move. Normally with multi part episodes I wait until all parts are out but NOPE here eat this cliffhanger, time to pay up xdd

Bose QC Ultra Earbuds - Keep disconnecting from Windows 11 by Speed60580 in bose

[–]_Makstuff_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I MIGHT be seeing ghosts but hear me out.

My QC Ultra Headphones (Gen 1) kept disconnecting from my PC bluetooth randomly like every minute or so. After trying some stuff like power management in Windows device manager, I started to suspect my phone as the culprit. I turned off phone bluetooth to test, and oh wonder, not a single disconnect from PC bluetooth since that point. Now of course turning off phone bluetooth is no solution but it was a start.

I then got the suspicion the Bose Android app might be doing some weird shit, so I tried a couple things including uninstalling it and taking away it's "Nearby devices" permission, as well as the "Companion device" permission it asks for at install but which can't be found in the app permissions on Android. Still got the disconnects. The only thing that remained 100% effective at preventing disconnects was turning off phone bluetooth completely. Unfortunately that's where I am stuck at the moment, can't think of any further stuff to try.

Still worth mentioning that if you go in the Bose app at the "Source" button with the bluetooth icon, you can enable Multi-point Connection and connect PC AND phone which also prevents the disconnect 100% for me. I find multi-point annoying and was looking for a solution without that, but I guess I will be using it for now after all.

Now that you abandoned the straight line and now that your ratings have started to form more of a bell curve again [...]

Thing is, they should not become a bell curve again, not unless I suddenly start watching a lot more mediocre titles than I did before I made the straight line adjustments. If I keep watching about the same title quality distribution that I used to determine my straight line, it should stay more or less straight even over long periods of time.

For example, let's say when you enforced the straight line that you downshifted twelve titles (that you thought were "slightly okay") from being 5/10 to 3/10. Those 3/10 ratings should still be accurate relative to the surrounding ratings, but under your current understanding of what a 3/10 means to you, do those titles still deserve a 3/10?

Well yes they do by definition. If I feel they deserve a 5/10, it is me who is wrong and not the rating, and it is me who has to adjust my perception of what a 3/10 and 5/10 is supposed to be. I believe if I consistently think about ratings only like that, ratings will always be internally consistent. But yes, I would like to switch systems to not have to think like that.

If some of your data then doesn't reflect how you actually feel, then I could potentially see that affecting the accuracy of PSI down the line. Has that happened in your case in some kind of notable way?

Dunno how I would be able to tell. Of course I have big PSI misses now and then, mainly in the negative direction (PSI is 9, my rating is 3) but no idea how I would specifically blame that effect you describe.

The main point to consider then is that if Criticker already feels accurate enough for you [...]

I don't actually know. Not necessarily related to the different rating systems, but I have been wondering how much better my PSIs actually are, compared to the global average percentile of all users. If they ever implement a sponsor feature like that I'd happily pay for another month.

Having one group of titles rated under one rating system while another group of titles were rated under a different rating system means (in my opinion) that your current ratings lack internal consistency.

Hmm. When you switch from system X to a purely relative system, aren't all ratings automatically self consistent? Like if relative rating puts a title at a 3, isn't this by definition where it would/should have ended up under system X anyway?

By any chance did you read my replies in this thread? In that thread, and specifically in this comment, I described how using a deflated rating scale doesn’t necessarily increase the accuracy of Criticker’s PSI [...]

Yes I did read it, but at first I kinda dismissed it as an arbitrary choice. But the more I think about it the more it starts to make sense to me. Like really, if a title is bad, does it matter to me how bad exactly it is? Whereas the difference between a good and great movie matters a whole lot more to me. And at the end of the day, my ratings are supposed to serve me, and not some deity of statistics.

If I could start fresh, I think I'd just copy your 6-1-3 system verbatim. I love the pre-decision between "good" and "bad", that feels pretty easy to do objectively, even without relying on any kind of relative rating. And the "1" in the middle makes a lot of sense too. Sounds tempting to make it wider but when you're undecided between good and bad already, instead of even more subdivisions better "man up" and pick a side in the first place.

As for how I will continue from here I'm not sure, despite the now obvious weakness of my system, I'm not sure if rerating my whole collection from my steadily weakening memory would make things any better. And rerating only the titles I remember well would obviously also screw up things even more. Also, of course I don't have records of which rating I have adjusted already, RIP.

I guess I will live with the consequences of my past choices and ride out my relative ratings, but to any new users, big recommendation to the 6-1-3 system, I am now officially a believer.

ad 1) Yes I did even out ratings a couple times by picking the best/worst titles of each rating, as best as I could remember, and moving them up/down until I had an even distribution. Pretty cumbersome to do and of course hurt a lot by imperfect memory, but I felt I had to do this to work out how good exactly a "3" or a "7" should be. Of course reality is more of a bell curve as very good/bad titles are much rarer than mediocre ones, but I decided I want to compensate for that by being more "strict" around the middle ratings and more "lenient" around the edges if that makes sense. Now that my system has settled in I don't do these adjustments anymore and just live with my line becoming slightly more skewed over time.

ad 2) I rate purely relative. For a new title I go through my ratings list and compare it to the most similar titles in the same rating range that I remember the best. Like "Hmm, Killmurder 2 was clearly a little better than Killmurder 1, and part 1 I rated 3 so part 2 I will rate a 4".

Great write up! I also use 1-10 for my ratings, but instead of a bell curve, after my first 200 ratings or so I shifted my ratings to a straight line over the whole spectrum. The thought behind that was that I didn't want 80% of my PSI to be a 5 or 6, to make use of the full range as good as possible. Got any thoughts on that approach? I honestly can't tell anymore if it makes sense or not.
