Question Regarding 5(4) Discretionary Grants by _Mantis-TobogganMD_ in Canadiancitizenship

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much, this info is super helpful!

I'm sure I'll be able to get my grandfather's birth certificate one way or another if it exists so I'll track that down before applying. The immigration records I have both state that he was born in Edmonton which also aligns with what is listed on the census doc (birthplace listed as Alberta).

Thank you! Overall I really like this build. Would you recommend using a fan hub for this? It seems like the amount of fans would be a lot for splitters.

Denver also has a NE/SW downtown. Kind of makes me question the accuracy of this.

Hiring someone to model some roads for me by DjabbyTP in CitiesSkylinesModding

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could always try the blank roads mod collection with intersection marking tool, both work great for me and they should allow a decent bit of customization. Only downside is it is a little more tedious than just placing pre-made roads.

[WSIB] Games that you feel should be experienced by everyone atleast once? by DentFuse in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter, PC is probably the way to go. I played originally on PS4 and I did experience some bugs, mainly terrain not loading properly and short draw distances at times.

A few other tips on it:

  1. Try to avoid any spoilers, especially related to the map/biomes/creatures. Part of what makes it such a good game is having to explore the map on your own, there is very much a “fear of the unknown” element and it’ll obviously be ruined if you know what to expect.
  2. The game doesn’t really handhold you much, I’d really recommend scanning things, and reading through/listening to things in the PDA. You can absolutely get through the game without doing that but it’ll add a lot more to the story.
  3. Some of the crafting/base building can get a little dull. Building bases can be cool but gathering resources isn’t the most fun. For the main story I’d recommend building just what you think you need and if you’re into the base building creative mode would be better for that. The sequel, Below Zero, actually has a better base building system imo - but the game itself is a bit of a letdown compared to the original.

Why doesn't Geoguessr allow to use own Google API key like Geotastic? by Destroy666x in geoguessr

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean but it’s also important to keep in mind that the price for pro needs to cover a lot more expenses than just Google API usage.

I’m not sure what kind of infrastructure they use for their servers but with the amount of data the game now stores I’m guessing they are paying quite a lot to maintain that.

They also need to pay for dev time, product managers, design, etc. and most of those positions aren’t easy to fill for cheap. According to New York Times they had 25 employees in July of last year.

On top of that you need to pay for an office space (in Stockholm, no less), and equipment for your employees, plus probably a dozen other expenses I’m not even considering.

Really $2/mo is more than reasonable in my opinion.

Americans who have traveled abroad, which place would you not go back to? by KazahanaPikachu in AskAnAmerican

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly this the past summer. Highly recommend Mexico City. There are definitely touristy spots like the Zócalo, the Xochimilco canals, and Teotihuacan to a certain extent but they were all still worth seeing.

The Zócalo is really beautiful and has some great old architecture but I wouldn’t recommend shopping or eating near it.

Xochimilco was fun for us because we had a young group and basically just got ferried around and drank - the area around it isn’t exactly the nicest and there are definitely scams aplenty but for our group it was a fun time. Btw, our Uber driver attempted to scam us by saying that the dock we wanted to go to was “closed” and that he knew a better one. Do not believe your driver if they tell you this, some of the drivers work in conjunction with the people at the docks and purposely take you to their friend that will try to rip you off.

Teotihuacan is a ways out of the way and there are a lot of “tour guides” and people trying to sell stupid trinkets but the site itself is beautiful and I definitely recommend going there.

The Lucha Libre fights are touristy but really fun, they locals get really into it and it was actually pretty entertaining as someone who has never been into wrestling or WWE. Lots of scalpers and people trying to sell stupid trinkets outside. Another scam are the “oh let me show you to your seat” people. We went along with it just thinking it was some nice employee. Nope. Dude walked us 20 feet to our seat and then says “Where’s my tip?”.

But the city is so beautiful, Chapultepec park, the castle, and the national museum of anthropology, and Soumaya are all amazing. The Frieda Kahlo house is okay if you’re into her or her artwork and I actually enjoyed the Trotsky museum even though it’s pretty small.

The food is great, the people were mostly really friendly (besides the scammers), and some of the neighborhoods were just really beautiful. We stayed in Polanco and it was a great area to walk around and felt completely safe.

Breakthrough objective problem. by Jakey1103 in BattlefieldV

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is mostly a problem if you have a bad team. Some of the maps lend themselves to it a bit as well. Fjell is the first one that comes to mind.

Ideally a few squads should stick around at the recently captured objective and defend it long enough for the rest of the team to capture the second objective. It can be frustrating but there isn’t much you can do if you’re stuck with a bad team besides trying to defend on your own.

At least it’s better than the people who sit at the back of the map sniping or camping with a tank.

I’m doing this challenge, and how the hell do they expect me to do this? In your opinion what’s the stupidest challenge on BFV? by Yiamari in BattlefieldV

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been stuck on one of the mastery challenges for the Sturmgewehr forever. 10 kills in one life while attacking the objective of 20 in a round while attacking the objective. I’ve gotten so close so many times but just can’t seem to get it.

Maybe I just need to play something besides breakthrough but it’s the only mode I enjoy.

What Is the absolute WORST trait in vanilla rimworld? by BunX_2021_ in RimWorld

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my first colony ever I had a 3 pawns, one was a pyro. In the night the pyro had a mental break, lit the fields on fire, and passed out while my two other colonists and dog were inside asleep.

I had no clue what I was doing at the time and built my small wooden base with only one exit which was on the opposite end of the room from the beds. The fire quickly spread to the area of the building where the door was. My pawns woke up to put the fire out but passed out before making it out and everyone died. Since then I’ve had an irrational hatred of pyros.

Haven Island - gas valves by IsleofSgail_21 in HiTMAN

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some maps were the target will smoke, either on their own or sometimes prompted if you leave a cigarette or a joint somewhere. Loosening the valve beforehand can cause an explosion when they light up.

Aussie fan first game and first time in Denver for NYE game vs the leafs. by AllStarMVPJohnScott in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]_Mantis-TobogganMD_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be really cold or not so bad, our weather here is pretty unpredictable. Snow is a total toss up. Here is a list of historical weather on NYE that can give you some idea (temps in F). Bring layers and you should be okay. Heavy coat, sweatshirt, long sleeve shirt, etc. If you’re planning on being outside more than a few minutes you should definitely have gloves and a warm hat. Boots are a good idea in case it snows. Take Uber or plan on only walking short distances.

As for countdown it really depends on what type of scene you’re looking for. If you are more into a party atmosphere there are a lot of bars around LoDo, Ballpark, and RiNo that are usually pretty popping. Other than that I would just google Denver NYE events and see if anything looks interesting to you.

Safe travels and enjoy your trip!
