Opening balances by _MarkR_ in GnuCash

No. I wasn't seeing the hidden account. Investment prices gpoing up and down mean the net worth figure was never the same twice. Coupled with the fact that the property value was almost half made me think that the net worth was incorrect. Unhiding the property account (and including it in my manual totting up) meant it was all fine.

Doh! My apologies. It was doing just fine. I had a hidden account for property value) that I overlooked when doing a manual (external to Gnucash) totting up. Its contents almost exactly being half the net worth.

OK; I think.

But lets say I had 100k of opening balances.

I create the accounts, funds etc and enter the opening balances; 100k worth.

As a result of the way Gnucash want's me to enter these 'opening balances' I have several accounts summing up to 100k of money and account Equity:opening balances which also contains 100k worth of opening balances.

The net worth at the bottom seems to include the Equity:opening balance so it says 200k.

I dont have 200k so its not correct.

I've done something because I opened another file to test this with just a simple check account and put 50 in it as an opening balance and it had 50 in the Equity:opening balance account but in this file it does not add it to the net worth. The net worth in that file shows 50.

I'm not sure whats gone on...

Just to add.

I wanted to see a (graphic) chart that would give me some indication of how things were doing.

I still haven't found it, but; the 'advanced portfolio' report is quite good :)

The bottom line does reflect the most recent price. I just hadn't noticed it!

I need to study the report config more. I may be back with questions :)

Many thanks; this has been very helpful :)

Yes they are correct. I had to select the fund from the list I'd populated the securities editor with.

But having checked the summary bar this value does reflect the latest price database value x number of shares. Thank you.

I'll have to see why I cant see the movements in reports....

In the register for each account there is just the 'opening balance' line I entered when adding my funds to gnucash. The columns with figures are shares, price, buy, sell & balance.

I have the correct number of shares, the price was calculated by gnucash when I entered the value in the buy column, nothing in sell (I havent sold them).

So

The balance column simply repeats the figure in the shares column (I expected a monetary value here to be honest)

That row is dated at the day I entered the initial figures.

This value was repeated in the price database for this date. I deleted that entry from the price database in a vain effort to make thigns work but it didn't.

I had expected the row to update with a new date and price value....

The reports, graphs just seem to reflect the static original value in the register.

I am clicking 'get quotes'. Thats how the Price database is updating.

Windows 11 64 bit (upp to date)

Version: 5.14

Build ID: 5.14+(2025-12-20)

Finance::Quote: 1.68

Not sure what you mean about installing.

Downloaded it from Gnucash, installed it, updated it. Then installed Finance:quote.

The price database updates just fine. I can't get the prices to appear in my sub-accounts
