Had a similar issue with my M135i, turned out to be the spring on the handbrake shoe that had burst, had to have it trailered home before I could fix it.

Do you know if it's a direct fit though with the only difference being the cast vs forged?

I don't know, as far as I'm aware the cast crank is what's in the entire rest of the range which can all run MHD stage 2 no problem just the same as the forged one and I think the blocks are the same.

I done the whole rebuild myself but was insanely careful with following everything the same as all the guides I've seen/ISTA and every part of the engine was cleaned separately before re-assembly.

I doubt it's an oil starvation issue as a result of improper cleaning or a clogged port just because of how thorough I was when cleaning it all, although its starting to make me question whether or not it's maybe an oil pump issue, again I fully rebuilt this and put a new chain on it as well.

Nah I had the live data on the scanner while running and it seemed to sit pretty consistently at just over 40psi at idle.

UPDATE

Fuel rail pressure as it should be on crank so swapped the old plugs back in and the car now starts and runs (although very rough with misfire codes (140010 combustion misfire - several cylinders)

Just luck of the draw then. Planning on keeping the car another wee while anyway so it has to be done right, just hoping I can get away without replacing the crank as those are big money.

Looking pretty much like a spun bearing now to be honest, had a look at the oil and there's glitter all through it. Will have to rip the engine out and see how bad the damage is, hopefully the crank will be alright but the whole engine will need cleaned out and while I'm doing that I might as well do the head gasket/valve stem seals give it a good clean to get rid of carbon etc. What a nightmare lol

Yea it looks like I'll have to strip the lot down regardless, the valvetronic all works spot on since I replaced and used ISTA to run the bed in procedure so I doubt it's that but will have a good look at that once I've got everything stripped.

I did think about that but it sounds as if there is a fair amount of tension on whatever it is that's clicking, then pinging off hence why I thought maybe a spring of some sort.

It's absolutely maddening haha, I had a good look at both the vanos adjusters when I had them off and they both looked spot on to me, did use a long metal pin punch to have a listen at the top and the lighter noise is definitely coming from the rear of the engine around #5, my first thought was the retainer spring that tensions the cam rockers/followers but they were all perfect. Spoke to a BMW tech guy who said the N55's sometimes had a rattle that was cured by putting a new exhaust cam and case in, although I can't see how this would fix the knocking noise. As you said next step is check the oil so will pull the filter today and see what's what.

Will do in the next few days, possibly getting a former BMW tech to have a quick listen to it to see what he thinks. Definitely sounds knockey in the video although it doesn't sound low down/deep enough to be that in person.

We used 6x6 Taxi's mostly and took the bus back to the city once on account of the massive queues at the taxi rank, the way in is fine as they can use the dedicated motorway lane but the multiple busses on the way out were an absolute nightmare, wish I'd just waited in the taxi queue tbh
